Love me some red wines. Unfortunately my love is unrequited due to finances. I make do with Bota Box (mostly CabSav). (I do have a small cooler from Craigslist still surviving with usually 6-10 bottles.)

My question...
I live in central Texas and some days even with the A/C working as hard as it can the ambient room temperature often will hit 80-ish. As the box will not fit in the cooler I only have the counter or the regular family refrigerator. Which would be the best place for the box? I'm thinking the fridge as I'd rather have it cold than cooked.

Thanks for your consideration,

Hi tim, welcome to the forum.  I'd think the main question in this case would be, what temperature do you like to drink your wine?   Probably not as chilled as a frig, but not 80 F either.  I'd use the frig and then let it warm to drinking temp.

I vote for the refrigerator also.

Not saying this is a great idea for long-term aging, it almost certainly isn't, for for simple preservation while waiting to drink, I have yet to experience anything convincing that it presents a real problem (some have claimed dried-out corks, fruitless wines...). I often keep several bottles of white and sparkling wine in my refrigerator for months at a time to no noticeable detriment, also some wines bottled without SO2, just seems prudent.

As I was thinking the fridge, too, I'm going with that. 80F wine tastes yucky. And I'm only talking a box at that.

Thanks!

And thanks for the welcome. I am late to caring about wine. All my life I've been willing to drink anything. But I had the "misfortune" of drinking some good stuff and have been dabbling ever since. As I'm on a very limited budget all I will ever be able to do is dabble, which is fine with me so long as I don't get to where I dribble.

Welcome Tim. Does us a favor and go back to your profile and put in your location. There are quite a few Texans on this board and some may be near you. It is an opportunity to meet and share.

Ugh. Given the stated conditions, you have two options, as I see it:
1. offsite storage
2. at the temp.-controlled wine store (i.e.: buy 'em when you need 'em).

80's-ish temperatures are not something I'd be comfortable with for my wines.

Welcome to the Forum pardner! I echo the frig recommendation.

For my modest collection of reds the cheapo $25 used 8 year old cooler is doing fine so far (58F). If the real heat of summer overtaxes it I will probably buy a decent one. But off-site is out of the question, if not laughable, for what I have. The box will be fine in the fridge.

Sadly we have managed to overstay our two coolers of capacity and despite having offsite there's a number of the cheaper wines that find themselves relegated to the fridge. Works just fine. Just sometimes need to give it a bit of time to warm up to get flavors...

Welcome to the forums, fellow Texan! For the box stuff, I second (third? fourth? tenth?) that the fridge should work great. No cork to worry about, and it's not long term. Just pour and let it sit out for a few minutes and it will get to a good temperature soon enough.

More confirmation is always good. Now to push my wife's box of pinot out of the way!

I'm pretty sure Bern's in Tampa has a cellar that's almost a cool as a fridge. They seem to have long aged wines that should have gone bad years before. I don't think the cooler temp will hurt anything. My refer is at 37-38F. I wish I could keep my champagne at that temp forever.
