Hey folks I know its holiday and vacation time but figured I would see if we can put together a Hartford area offline before the and of the year. Was thinking possibly before Thanksgiving, or the first week of December. Would love to see the usual suspects or new faces. Anyone interested ?

Ok guys December got a bit busy and never happened. Who's up for an
event in January ?

Attendees:

1. Jonathan Sirot: 2014 Maybach Materium
2. Chris Foley: 2014 Calon Segur
4. Dennis and Windy Kanagie: 2014 MACDONALD
5. Tad Witherington: 2000 Peby Faugeres
6. Joe Neri
8. John and Gina Welsh

John will be enjoying wine with us. Gina does not drink wine so they will be bringing one bottle.

Date: Monday January 22nd start time 7:00 pm
Place: J Gilberts 185 Glastonbury Blvd Glastonbury Ct 06033

This is a definite pass for us. With 2 holiday sales (Veteran's Day and Black Friday) to prepare the company for, plus a new store opening, I won't have time in November. Come December, we have a lot scheduled with friends and family.

However, there's a teeny possibility of getting up that way on 12/4 or 12/11.

I'm inclined more toward early December myself.
My November is already going much like October.
By December I may not care about my workload.

So are we trying a new place or returning to one that we dined at already?

I'm in for January....

It will be great to see you again Tad. Hope you had a very very merry Christmas. Trying to finalize a date. Thinking of either Monday Jan 15th or Monday Jan 22nd. Per request from another couple attending we are doing this one in Glastonbury if that works and would like to do it at J Gilberts. They have agreed to a $12 per bottle corkage if we are 8 people or more otherwise it will be $15 per bottle. Their normal fee is $20 per bottle. Please let me know if either of these dates is better.

I'll keep an eye on this -- if it's 29 Jan., I could likely make it. I've got some 2002 Napa CS mags that might be ready. If it's earlier, no worries!

We could feasibly do 1/29 as well. The only issue is we're having dinner with several other couples the night before, so come Tuesday we might be wined out.... but we'll deal with that if/when it happens.

The bottle I planned on bringing to the next offline was consumed a couple days ago.

Chris, I have faith in your ability to select another bottle worthy of the venue.

ps - I still have your corkscrew. It will probably start wagging it's fulcrum like crazy when it sees you again.

not my corkscrew. I haven't brought one with me yet.

Yes I have other choices, depending on the chosen theme but everything in my cellar is 2008 and younger.

How about a young Bordeaux? The 2010 La Dame de Montrose is really, really good.
Or a really young Bordeaux. 2014 Calon Segur was just declared the BWE WOTY for 2017, so I have some excuse for sacrificing one.
I have another 2011 Lagier Meredith Syrah, just like the one I brought last time that wasn't noticed on the table. (I admit, we didn't need any more wine that night)
I also have a bottle of Cab Franc which was produced not far from where Gary and Gayle live, that might be interesting to share.
Those are a few first thoughts.

A Bordeaux might be a good contrast to the Napa Cabs that will probably be opened (MACDONALD and Maybach Materium).

Cran,

I believe the corkscrew was mine (the other Chris)

Not sure the 22 will work for us, but can grab at a future event if you remember

Ooops, I think you're correct. It will be in the pocket of my wheelie wine bag regardless of how long it takes for us to see each other again at a GTG.

hahaha! Makes for a funny post, but you know it isn't about the cost of the bottle.

Seriously, I don't know much about Bordeaux and have had less than a handful I'd buy again - La Conseillante (1998) , Clinet (1995), and La Dominique (1989). That list takes in to account cost as well as enjoyment. I would love to find a few more reasonably priced bottles of more recent vintages to cellar besides maybe Cantemerle.

Chris
Hope you had a happy New Year. My vote for what to bring would be the 2014 Calon Segur as first choice, BUT with a long decant. Second choice would be the 2010 La Dame de Montrose. I am happy with either one though . Alternatively we could use a bottle of bubbly ideally Champagne if possible. Looking forward to a fun event and returning to a venue I haven't been to in a while. Jonathan

Yes we did. Thanks. Our habit is to stay home and enjoy the company.
Actually we went to the UCONN women's basketball game in Htfd. Sunday afternoon.
At least this year we were awake at midnight, although we saved the champagne for Monday morning.

I normally don't go for infanticide but the '14 C-S should show well after enough air exposure. Maybe I can sneak home at lunchtime to decant so it has 5 hours before I put back in the bottle.
It may need that much.

I was actually thinking of double decanting the '14 I'm bringing the evening before, then again once we check in until it's time to leave for dinner. An insider tip said the Cab I'm bringing, while excellent with several hours of air, is even better the second day.

I also will double decant the '14 Materium. I don't think it needs more than 2 hours though as t think the TRB wines are pretty accessible young. I also had experience with this particular btl in August. I think I only decanted a little more than an hour then but an extra hour cant hurt. We have a nice line up of wine shaping up. I have updated it on the first post.

Was just down the cellar trying to decide on a Riesling. There are several singles from '71, '75, '83, and '90, most notable being JJ Prüm Auslese - a 1983 Wehlener Sonnenuhr and a 1990 Graacher Himmelreich. Might be time to have a "last puppy" streak starting now and running to the Central Florida offline.
