Making a creamy prawn pasta dish tonight for my parents, my wife and her parents. Only my dad has a clue about wine (apart from me and my wife) and Riesling is his favourite in general so I am not sure how the low acid of the Rhone will go down. Wanted to serve a Rhone white anyway.

Do you think the Chave is wasted? It is the 2003. I have a couple of bottles but haven't tasted any yet.

cheers

Since the dish has cream, I suspect that Riesling would be the better choice. I love white Rhones, but find them difficult matches for food. I suggest serving the white Rhone as an aperitif, and then Riesling with the meal.

Add a little saffron and fennel to the dish and serve Chave.
Nectar of the gods!

for me the Chave is a wine to really spend time thinking about. I would either drink it alone or I would have at most a couple snacks with it. Really love the stuff.

I've been lovin the Beaucastel Blanc and think the slight oxidized style will pair well.
All in all...you can't really go too wong here with your options.

The 2003 Chave is a fairly unusual wine. Very dense, almost oily, with a lovely nose and a rather dry palate. Now, I have no idea what vintage of the BB you are like looking at, but that wine usually has a nutty, sweeter mouthfeel, and a waxy nose. For the dish you describe, I think the BB is probably a better match.

Hi all,

thank you for the advice. In the end after some champagne and a bottle of lovely vire clesse I decided to go lower key and went with a young and refreshing - despite the oak vanilla - white rioja. It wouldn't have been right to open a more complex wine I think...

hope you all had a great evening
