I went to the grocery store and made the mistake of asking the resident wine expert to recommend a sparkling wine for mimosas. He recommended a Spanish wine and since I'm not very knowledgeable about Spanish sparkling wines, I asked him what varietal it was made from. He said "like all Champagne, it is made from Chardonnay". Since his tone was that he thought I was a moron for not knowing that, I figured further conversation was a lost cause and I just let it go. It turns out that the wine he recommended is a Macabeo/Xarel-lo/Parellada blend.

Happens all the time. When doing a tasting here locally I found a Viognier that was obviously overoaked, full of butterscotch, toffee, and spices that were not varietally correct. I asked him about this and he said, you just haven't drank enough Viognier, which is probably true, but that stuff he was serving was not recognizable as that grape.

I have yet spoken with someone at a grocery store than knew anything about wine, despite anything they told me or their position.

I was at a nice Champagne tasting today at the local Binny's and it was nice to have a few free minutes to chat with an importer of several grower Champagnes and Cremants.  He on the other hand knew all the blends and those tiny details that we enjoy talking about.

I just posted in another thread how much I liked the Michel Arnould & Fils Brut Reserve NV, and the Rosé.  The producer is from Verzenay.  Best part is that the importer sells direct to Binny's, so the prices were really good.

I'll have to look for that one. Read some CT notes and it sounds a lot like another grower champer I like-

N.V. Jose Dhondt Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut
