Not sure if this is worthy of a thread, but I just felt like posting this. Rarely has a new wine word pervaded the CT Forum than this iteration of Champagne. I see it friggin' EVERYWHERE! When did this start? Just a funny observation...

I seached the forum for "champers" by our friendly Londoner, pjaines, on a hunch.

46 record(s) returned

Earliest record by him (I think), March, 2009, almost 4 years ago.

I am certain that our friends across the pond will chime in, but my sense is that the term is an established one on the Big Island.

And Bob's your uncle?

Now that you mention it that term greatly annoys me, not sure why. :)

pjaines, you're an innovator! You can tell future generations that you were WAY ahead of your time!

Nice reserach, BTW, ChrisinSunnyside!

Many of the Brits refer to "sparklers", which I like a bit better.

I have heard it called Champers for many years. I just thought it was a common thing.

I do think its just a way of distinguishing champagne from sparkling wine or bubbly from other lands, whether carbonated or made in the champagne technique.

I don't know why it would be "irritating or bothersome." We refer to Cabernet Sauvignon as Cab or Cali Cab even Cult Cabs. Burg both white and red, the initial CdR, CdP, BdM and so many other abbreviations. It shouldn't be taken as annoying or snooty, just an abbreviated term of endearment.

My GF is even using it ... rather cute, especially when she asks for Krug or Bolly RD

So does anyone use this nomenclature in verbal communication or only in print? I personally have yet to here anyone actually say it out loud (for which I am thankful).

My first memory of the word Champers, comes from a UK comedy show called Absolutely Fabulous. One of the characters plays a semi-washed-up fashionista who is obviously fast her prime. It started in the 90s and I guess was poking some fun at the excess of the 80s. Anyway, all this is before my time

The other slang term champers has led to is... shampoo (same meaning.) Try that one on PJ
