Trouble Downloading into Excel - 10/3/2007 3:06:06 PM

For some reason, I am not able to download into Excel. I type in the login name and password and nothing happens. I've double-checked the name and password and that doesn't seem to be the problem. I'm using a Mac OSX 10.4.10 and Excel 2004 for Mac.

I've been waiting for a response to your post because I am having the same problem. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to do?

Sorry about that.

On some computers it doesn't download automatically. But it's just a couple of clicks away:
  1. On the LOGIN tab make sure you have entered your handle and password from the site. You will only have to do this once.
  2. Switch to the WINE LIST tab.
  3. Click into the first row.
  4. If the EXTERNAL DATA toolbar doesn't pop up then RIGHT-CLICK (or CMD-CLICK on the Mac) on any toolbar and pick EXTERNAL DATA from the list of toolbars.
  5. The second to last button is REFRESH ALL. Click on it.
Voila!

I had no problems and then - didn't work at all !

The key for me was that I had a new PC - with a higher level of security that blocked Eric's download.
Simply enabled the download and it's all back to normal.

90% of the time the problem is me, so I just plod around looking for what I did wrong.

Good luck with those downloads.

Yes, another thing to look for is overeager firewall software. Such software expects things like FireFox, Safari and Internet Explorer to access the Internet. However, few such programs expect the same from Microsoft Excel. Nice software will at least notice Excel trying to get to the web and ask if that is OK. Nasty software just denies Excel and leaves you scratching your head at why I say this should work...

One other thing on the Mac. Excel 2004 could be the issue. They had problems with web queries in their older versions which are largely cleared up in OfficeX. That could also be what you are hitting.

Eric, thanks for the wonderful tool. FYI - Excel 2004 is the latest version for the mac. Office X was the 2001 version I think. Anyway, I did as you suggested and went to the wine list, clicked on an entry and the web toolbar appeared. I was able to refresh the data. I noticed that I had to do this for every single sheet. Is there a way to globally update all the sheets with one click?

On the toolbar that floats up, there should be a REFRESH ALL button on the right-hand side of the toolbar. That will do all of the sheets.

That means Excel is not allowed to see the web. Check your firewall.

If the spreadsheet doesn't work for you, or you're using a different spreadsheet app, like OpenOffice, you can do this instead:

- Make sure you are logged into CellarTracker.
- Enter this URL into your browser: http://www.cellartracker.com/xlquery.asp
- You'll get a page with all of the data in a simple table.
- Save this page to your hard drive.
- You should be able to import that html file into your spreadsheet app.

I've done this with OpenOffice, and I imagine most spreadsheet apps should be able to import this.

One suggestion if some of your tabs seem to be loading but not others - SCROLL UP. It seemed like some of my tabs weren't loading, but then I realized I was looking at row 450 (and my wine list is only about 50 bottles long).
