List your favorite producers in the sub-$75 dollar range that would be a solid representation of each Napa AVA. I want to understand the subtle (and not so subtle) differences between the various districts. Might even make a nice theme for an offline... Poll for kicks to see if one area rules them all.

Atlas Peak
Calistoga
Chiles Valley District
Coombsville
Diamond Mountain
Howell Mountain
Los Carneros
Mount Veeder
Oak Knoll
Oakville
Rutherford
Spring Mountain
St. Helena
Stags Leap
Wild Horse
Yountville

That'd be a fun tasting. The site definitely has something to say in Napa, though the trick is finding the producers to show them off at $75, kind of a modest price point for Napa Cab. Saw an interesting map and commentary on this subject recently on WB.

Calistoga- Larkmead
Howell Mountain - Dunn/ O'Shaughnessy
Mount Veeder - O'Shaughnessy
Rutherford - BV
Spring Mountain - Myriad/ Quivet
Stag's Leap - Shafer
Yountville - Kapcsandy (Hey, maybe the Endre?)

Pritchard Hill
OK, so not an AVA (yet)
still, Pritchard Hill but forget the 75 bucks

Calistoga--I think Drinkward Peschon is Calistoga Fruit
St Helena--Lewelling
Oakville--Rudd Crossroads
Yountville--Keever is 90 bucks
Stag's--Beau Vigne Juliet
Howell--O'Shaughnessy and Outpost

+1 on Robert's assessment--hard to get the goods for $75

Ok - can only do the mountain-y ones....

Diamond Mountain - CoHo Headwaters I think can be gotten for that as can Andrew Geoffrey, nothing else we tasted that day was under $75
* If you're willing to go above then Constant was our favorite of that day

Howell Mountain - O'Shaugnessy (although it's more at winery), Cimarossa, Dunn (also a bit more than the $75)
* Again if above then Arkenstone makes a nice wine

Mt. Veeder - Lagier Meredith, O'Shaugnessy
* If you go above, then Progeny (Paul from O'Shaugnessy's newer label) is pretty awesome

Spring Mountain - Smith Madrone (real value - ~$45), Pride, Barnett (I think the regular cab is under $75)
* If willing to go above like the Rattlesnake Hill

Also love Pritchard Hill... David Arthur Merritagio is under the threshold and a good wine

Hmmm - maybe this is why value/wine went up so much after last year's Napa trip....

Rutherford: 12c Cabs, Inglenook RC Syrahs, and Snowden
Atlas Peak: Krutz Family Stagecoach Syrah or Cab
Coombsville: Faust
St. Helena: Chappellet Mountain Cuvee or Malbecs

I <3 Pritchard Hill too. Chappellet, Continuum & Bryant club/list member here. At least Chappellet can get under $75 threshold. The second wine from the other two isn't that far off.

Going for a dinner in the evening to French Laundry next month and will be up in Napa several hours before. I just want to stay in and around Yountville - any other recommendations? We like Kapscandy but do they taste on the weekends?

I don't believe so...you also need a minimum party of four for a reservation.

Keever is tasty and the family is delightful. It's located just above the golf course, across the NVWT tracks

Chappellet makes some lower priced juice, on Pritchard Hill. Still around $125-$140 unless you go with cab Franc. I think some of their Mtn cuvee comes from there.

Rutherford- BV and their quality seems to be improving, getting back to the way they used to be way back when.

I think the Chappellet 100% Cab Franc is very nice! BV makes nice juice but the are so big that they will never again have that special feel for most winos. (Small and cultish are in.).

It's a bit of a trade off IMHO - the valley wines have great fruit but seem a bit flabby compared to the zing from the mountain fruit. Both are great, but styles are different. I like them both, but wonder if blends of both would be the best of both worlds!?

If looking for blends of mountain and floor fruit, among the most famous are Phelps Insignia and Caymus Special Select.

Or you could split the difference with Shafer Hillside ; )

For a nice CabFr look for the one Karen Culler makes for Wolf Family
Just a little CabSauv blended
