This evening, we made a few adjustments to the bulk editing functionality on the desktop site. We've been seeing a number of folks getting confused between the checkboxes that allow you to select a wine in the left column, and the currently selected/yellow highlighted wine that is shown in the right panel, and these changes are geared towards clarifying the distinction between the two, and making it easier for you to complete the task you're trying to do.

The site design is such that the checkboxes allow you to select any number of wines/bottles/notes, then perform a single action on them, which is available from the menu bar that appears at the top of the table. They are completely independent of the currently selected wine (indicated by a yellow highlight) and its additional details which are shown in the right panel (if turned on)--changing the selection does not impact the checkbox state, and vice-versa.

Specifically, to reduce user confusion, we've changed two things:

  1. We've put one-click access to common bulk actions, such as "Drink or Remove", "Add a Tasting Note" and "Add to My Cellar" on the wine search result, My Cellar, and Ready to Drink views. Previously, these were hidden under an obscure drop-down menu named "Bulk Edit Options". By bringing them up to the top level, we expect them to be significantly more discoverable. Note: these actions only appear once a checkbox has been checked in any of these views.
  2. To reinforce the connection between the checkboxes and the bulk actions at the top of the table, when you select a checkbox, you'll now notice the color of the left-most column changes to match that of the row of buttons which apply to the checked items.

If you never use the checkboxes, you won't notice any changes. But if you do use them, we hope these visual updates make it faster and easier for you to do what you want. As always, please let us know whether you find these helpful or harmful!

One final note: we have a lot of items on our list to enhance the functionality available as bulk actions--we haven't quite gotten that done yet, but it is still on our plan for the future. The current changes are visual only, and do not add any new functionality.

Thanks,
Dan

A nice addition. One comment/question. As I scroll down my cellar to a wine near the bottom of "In My Cellar" and click the check box to perform an action, the action menu is at the top of the page which requires a scroll back to the top to perform the action. For me, it will still be easier to simply click the wine name and move to the side panel to perform the action as opposed to clicking the check box and scrolling back to the top to perform the action. Would it be possible for the action menu to jump down to the checked wine or for the wine to jump up so that the action is less time consuming? Just a thought.

Dan, I could imagine us treating it like the fixed row.

Yeah, I thought (briefly) about making it stick; it's probably a good idea. I'll take a look later.

As of this evening, the bulk action "row" will now stick to the top of the screen when it is visible, so you can scroll to the bottom of the list and still have quick access to the associated actions.

Enjoy!

Really awesome. It's so obvious in hindsight. Great solution Dan!
