Had some Laphroaig 10 yo cask strength a few nights ago. Not sure Islay whisky gets more Islay than this.

That is indeed a very Islay Islay!

Although I would never claim it to be the "finest" whisky, it may very well be my personal favorite.

It's a great bottle, to be sure. I think I still lean towards Caol Ila as my favorite Islay.

I’ll never turn-down a Caol Ila; they make great whisky.

An unexpected discovery at Trader Joe's: a TJ's private labeled single cask bottling of Mannochmore 14. It's tasty!

I don't run across this distillery frequently and tend to jump on it when I do.

Wwwhhhhhat?!!? No way. That is crazy. I know what I'll be doing tomorrow ...

Coming back to this: I did find a bottle. It’s probably about 35% gone. Nothing amazing, but it is very good, and is a good QPR, imo.

Completely agree with your assessment. Not amazing, but quite enjoyable, and a great price. I haven't seen it since I originally chanced upon it, so I don't know if it was an opportunistic one-off for TJ's.

It must have been a one-off. I check the shelf for that one, or any other similar surprise, every time I stop-in at TJs, but haven't seen it, or similar deal, since.

Anyone else celebrating Robert Burns Night with a dram or two of whisky?

Didn’t realize Robert Burns Night was today, but what the heck… I suppose it gives some purpose to tonight’s pour: cask strength 15yo Bruichladdich distilled in 1990.

Slàinte Mhath!

We celebrated Burns Night last night via a company called Burns Distilled. I don't have any association with the organization. It was our first time participating. For $85, Burns Distilled put together a package (see pic above) that included a nice selection of whiskeys - Arran Robert Burns Single Malt, 18 yr Jura that was finished in red Bordeaux barrels, 12 yr Bowmore, Laphroaig Quarter Cask. There were poetry readings and music via Vimeo. It was a nicely done. Highly recommend.

Don’t know anything about Burns night but enjoyed a 12 year old Glenmorangie The Lasanta which has become my goto Scotch. At $35 I buy 3 or 4 at a time. I was buying the Glenmorangie 14 year Cuba Ruban but it’s $15 a bottle more and the 12 year old is surprisingly just as smooth. Much smoother than MacCallan 12 which I find pretty harsh now so don’t buy it anymore.

My wife and I, who are both about half Irish but not the least bit Scottish, started "observing" Burns night after a trip to Scotland 3 years ago. One of the leading producers of American Haggis (sans lungs) happens to be in my home state, up in Bangor Maine (McKean's is made by WA Bean). As I was up there last weekend, I picked a couple up (way, way cheaper to buy in person vs online from there!), and cooked one of them last night with mashed potatoes and whisky sauce (hold the neeps).

Alas, as we were both exhausted from various things over the weekend, we drank water. No beer, no wine, no dram. Oh well.

That's another tipple that I enjoy when I see it in bars. I try not to have spirits at home though, for the sake of my liver.

That looks fun. I'll have to keep this in mind for next year, if they do it again.

Hopefully I can post a reminder next year.

We’re not Scottish either. But we’ve made two trips and loved it each time.

We celebrated a private event Burns dinner last Friday at a Metro Atlanta Scotch Club member's house. We did have an accomplished bagpiper. He said he'd take requests. I suggested Freebird. He told me later he could absolutely have done it, but both he and I would have been done away with...

Great dinner, and a lot of not necessarily wee drams. Maybe a couple of dozen. Heck, I took a 21 yo Jura, a 1995 11 yo Bowmore aged in bourbon cask and finished in Guigal Condrieu cask (FANtastik), and a 26 yo Bowmore (13 years bourbon, 13 years French oak barrique). There was an embarrassment of fine Glendronachs.

But you should ask him about the time I gave him a late night crash course on Scotch!

Hey MM,
What do you think about Scotches finished in Sauternes or Rum barrels? I like the ones finished in sherry casks. I am undecided on one finished in marsala.
