I'm just saying this now, as down the road I suspect many might be peeved.

Remember the Garagiste Mystery wines. I don't do, something expecting generosity out of anything unknown. I did SS this year more about the giving than receiving.

I wouldn't participate in those few mystery boxes when the Quebec folks owned them briefly either.

I generally hate surprises. You might be met with serious hostility throwing me a surprise party. I try to only bet with stuff where I'm okay eating the entire loss and those are few and far in between.

Just saying this now. Sorry if it sounds 'bah humbug-ish.

Guess I'm going to have to open one of those, just to see the cork.
I suspect you may be right.
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is not.

Umm... these wines are thought to be Harlan products, based on the corks:

Cork picture also looks like these COULD be new corks printed with the correct vintage and swapped out for the originals. No mention of that anywhere, but it's certainly doable for someone with the right equipment. No staining difference on corks that have been there six years longer? hmmm. #juststirringthepot.

Well the info reads "worlds foremost wine consultant" which almost assuredly means Michel Rolland.

He has a lot of clients...

Sloan was sold in 2011, that would mean holding the wines for 4 years?

You beat me to it. Thanks for posting.

I just found that blog post as well, not through CT. Long read, but interesting. Have no intention of buying the 6-pack if it is still available, but have certainly done some sleuthing on other wines.

Cheers!

Here is another possibility....

Calistoga, Calif.—Vineyards and winery properties continue to change hands in the hot California premium vineyard market. Von Strasser Winery is the latest established winery to sell part of its assets following a similar sale by Cuvaison Estate Wines and E. & J. Gallo’s purchase of J Vineyards & Winery. Winery owner Rudy Von Strasser has agreed to sell his 35-acre estate property at 1510 Diamond Mountain Road, which includes 15 acres planted to Cabernet Sauvignon (12 acres), Petit Verdot (1 acre), Malbec (1 acre) and Grüner Veltliner (1 acre), plus a winery. Vines are planted between 500 feet to 1,000 feet elevation. Von Strasser declined to disclose price or the buyer. The sale does not include the brand, label, trademarks, inventory or winery business, which will continue both during and after the transaction. Rudy and Rita von Strasser bought the historic Roddis Estate Winery in 1990 and began renovating and modernizing the vineyards and buildings. The structure that houses the winery is an historic barn that was built in the late 1880s.

Just read the colorado piece I would have to agree. Need to brush up on my Alejandro Bulgheroni Estate knowledge.

Certain Costco's are carrying this set for $299, which is a much better deal than I got this "limited production, special release" for.

Cameron posted on WB saying that these are not Alejandro Bulgheroni Estate as speculated on Colorado Wine Press site. The mystery continues.

Huh,

If we just keep posting well-reasoned guesses, maybe Cam will -- by process of elimination -- tell us who made the wine.

Also, another clue: who uses the "nest egg" for their library wine storage?

I stopped buying "mystery wines" a long time ago. I found that the doubt about what I was drinking put a damper on the enjoyment. I want to know when I'm drinking a Cos, or Latour or any great wine. Knowing the pedigree helps with the enjoyment. Otherwise, I'd only buy after tasting wine blindly (and likely pick the Charles Shaw .

Having said that, I hope that those that took the leap enjoy the wine.

Although he states it is NOT Bulgheroni it is possible that he may be skirting the truth here.....to wit..

Harlan sold a 14 acre vineyard to Mr. B.... fact

Mr B. is now producing a wine called Lithology (beginning with the 2013 vintage- CH Private Reserve goes up to 2012). Lithology is made from "distinctive vineyards in St. Helena, Rutherford, Oakville, and Pritchard Hill. "

It makes sense that not all (or maybe any) of the contracts may have followed with the purchase.

My theory is these wines were Harlan derived from the 14 acre parcel that did not make the "cut" as to be included in the Reserve program that Harlan runs.

I know not original.....

Okay just seeing this thread for the first time. I did buy one bottle of this way back when they discounted even further and let you buy 1 or more bottles. About 6 months ago I popped the 09 I bought, the underlying fruit was pretty delicious but a wall of oak was dominating. Who knows maybe that will go away in the future...or a hundred years
