I noticed the label printer that's recommended for $120 is currently $49 on Amazon, and was wondering if anyone else is using the barcode/scanning system that CT supports? Is it worth the effort?

I confess to being an obsessive labeler. Not always successful, but I try to scan out as I consume to keep inventory up to date.

My favorite feature of the whole system.

I print labels with bar codes for every bottle I receive into my cellar.
I print them using Household Labels which are removable, available on Amazon (http://a.co/hR1IsBq).
I stick the label on a plastic bottle tag, not the bottle (http://a.co/2S2X1Ty)
The label wraps around the tag leaving human information on the front, and the bar code on the back.

Now you can tell what a bottle is without pulling it from the rack or bin.
When I grab a few bottles from the rack, I just throw the tags in a kitchen drawer. Later I can scan the tags to mark the bottles as consumed, and then peal off the removable label and reuse the plastic tag.

I love bar codes. It identifies each bottle absolutely.

I print tags and put them on all bottles. With both offsite and onsite I also track where bottles are stored including slots in my big racks. A touch tedious perhaps but pays off when trying to find a specific bottle to bring home or take to storage. I do NOT use a scanner for inventory though.

I started using barcode and scanner about a year ago.
Not sure why I waited so long

Doesn't take too long to get initial labels put on everything.
Saves a lot of time after in place

Strongly recommend if you have an interest

Yeah I print two-part labels for everything that makes it to the home cellar. (Offisite only if it was at home first)... The best part now is the integration with the mobile app so you don't need a scanner to mark of consumed bottles. Totally worth it to actually track consumption correctly.

I am using the Dymo LabelWriter 450 Turbo with the 2 1/8 X 2 3/4 inch labels. I created my own bottle tags out of old business cards (blank on one side) using a double-punch that has a 1-inch and 1 1/4 inch cutter that can be found at most hobby stores, the 1" for most narrow bottle ends.

My bar-code logic is to take the wine name's first 4 characters concatenated with a unique 4-digit reference number plus the vintage year. So the 2011 Guigal Chateau D'Ampuis Cote Rote Syrah code is "GUIG1145-11" and my printed label shows the wine name, vintage, and drink window as well as the "custom code."
