wine in cans

Awesome! I would totally drink that, assuming the wine inside is good.

Meh. I'm pretty indifferent.

Ughh. I'd pour it for the in-laws but keep it away from me.

So, I recently drank wine from a can (an Oregon pinot from Underwood). It's a novel form factor, and I'm curious about what the winos here think.

My impression is the can lends some flavor to the wine which for a good wine would not be appreciated.

We had a can of something down in Chile. It was more novel than good.

But for some of those summer sipper wines, maybe? Not for a 'real' wine though.

I had an Underwood Pinot about two years ago. Pretty poor--very simplistic and dilute. Can't recall the abv but mentioning dilute makes me think that the packaging suggests watering it down would be a good thing if people are going to drink it out the cans like a Coke.

Cans change the flavor. I'll pass.

@Cran, have you drank any canned wines? Not asking to criticize: I have no skin in this game. Just mostly curious if there's data to back up the opinion, or if it's more speculative.

The producers say the the liners on the cans stop them from affecting flavor. Although one obviously needs to take their assessments with a grain or two of salt.

The only true way to know if the can affects the wine, is to taste something that was both bottled and canned. Otherwise, it might just be crappy wine. We have had the Underwood bubbles and it was drinkable, but I would not buy it again. I have a can of their Pinot in the cellar and need to drink it soon just to know how it is.

I think the cans are best for events like going to the beach, tailgating, hiking, etc, not for sitting around the house and drinking.

The poll choices were not adequate. "Useful only for poisoning opossums" should have been offered as a choice.

No, never had wine in cans. But beer, soda, lemonade, iced tea, and every other liquid I've tried in both can & bottle always tasted worse in the can. I guess that would technically make my opinion speculative, but based on a bevy of beverage comparisons.

None for me thanks; like Dennis, I am a little suspicious of off flavors from cans.
I WOULD be interested in smaller cans of various wines for cooking if I didn't notice "can" flavors.

I have never tasted wine in cans, so am not voting. Would not turn down a sample if someone offered it to me to do a side-by-side with bottled wine. But reluctant to spend my own $ when I can get basic daily drinkers for about $3.50.

Does that make my position that of a hanging chad?

Our UK members might be able to comment - I think I saw cans in Marks and Spenser (and/or maybe tear-off lids from plastic glasses)

Tetrapaks were ok for rough reds I recall

Had wine in all three + plastic 'bottles'.

They'be been around for around 20 years but never really taken off.

All have their place. Many years ago a red in a single serve tetrapack at the bottom of my back pack made it all the way through trekking in Thailand's Golden Triangle and, though the tetrapack was squashed and scuffed, the wine inside tasted wonderful when poured on the banks of the Mekong!

Mostly wine in the small containers is pretty basic, but no worse than the house wine in many pubs -- or in a French cafe!

Would I buy one if not trekkling, camping, etc or going to a venue where they banned glass containers? Nope.

Poll doesn't give enough answers - mine would be 'why not in the right circumstances', but I'e ticke dthe only positive one tho' I don't think 'awesome'!

Well, I prefer craft brewers to can (rather than bottle) their beers, so I can't categorically say "No." to canned wines. Now, I've never had a canned wine. Would I try one? Sure. But mtpisgah has it perfect when he says one must taste the same wine bottled and canned to see if the can imparts flavor (it shouldn't). My main concern with cans isn't off flavors, but rather that a can has an impermeable seal. I wonder what effect, if any, that would have on ageing.
