Pinot Noir and Chenin Blanc.

I ended up not choosing Pinot Noir but it was a close thing. I am currently wearing a tshirt I bought in Burgundy that says 'In Pinot Noir We Trust', which should suggest that I am a bit of a fan of good Pinots. Though Pinot is such a difficult grape to grow I am not sure that trusting it is a great idea....

Chenin blanc is a great choice too. The Loire produces some great Chenins, and I am hearing some good things about South African Chenins -- hoping I'll actually get to try some of them at some point! Australian Chenin blanc can be a bit disappointing, though I gather Jauma and Dowie Doole (both from McLaren Vale) are honourable exceptions.

Most S. African Chenins I've had have over-delivered for their respective price points. They're absolutely worth exploring.

They're wines I've wanted to try for a while. Oddly, they are more readily available in the UK than Australia -- perhaps because it's a bigger market for imported wines.

In related news: this Guiberteau is solid.

I've not come across their wines before, but it sounds like another producer I should look out for. Saumur is a region I'm fond of anyway. They seem to be imported here too: https://www.bibendum.com.au/Domaine-Guiberteau/ .

Torn between Grenache, Zin and Tempranillo... leaning towards Grenache over Zin. Zin is my 1st love!
And then Cab is a must for a grilled dead cow pairing.

True. You could always try buying them in bond from a UK merchant and shipping direct so paying only domestic taxes. Minimum order typically 6 or 12, no mixed cases, but shipping might cost more than the wine, especially for the smaller case

I've vaguely considered buying wine from France in the past, as Burgundy there is half the price (or less) than it is here, even with taxes... but the shipping costs are eye-watering. It's no doubt worth it in that I could buy wines not available here, but doesn't work on my budget. I do visit the UK from time to time, though, so might buy some next time I'm there. I've brought back 13 bottles of wine from a trip to France & the UK before, with some difficulty and a certain amount of persuasion to convince them not to charge for excess baggage. It'd probably still be cheaper than postage, anyway.

After having been thinking about Loire Chenin blancs my local wine shop today had one bottle of 2011 Domain Pichot 'Coteau de la Biche' Vouvray -- the first time in a while they've had any. It was, quite logically, in the section for Burgundies, just next to the Chapoutier Hermitage. (I am not sure who decides that these wines are secretly from Burgundy!). Coincidence or synchronicity?

Well, the bottles are similar shapes

If you like Chablis, you could do worse than check out Bekkers' Vaillons. Nice stuff, 1er cru. Emmy makes it in France and sells it from McLaren Vale

I guess so . Oddly, the Crozes-Hermitage is correctly put in the 'rest of France' section (the only options being Burgundy, Bordeaux, and the rest of France). It's a good source of amusement, if nothing else...

I have heard of the Bekkers' Chablis. Sadly I wasn't aware of it when I was in Adelaide, and I think you either need to be on their mailing list or a visitor at their cellar door to buy it. Next time I'm there I'll have to visit.

Sounds right...and then horror of horrors, they actually charge a tasting fee - AUD10

As do Yangarra. I am always a bit ambivalent about tasting fees. I can certainly see the logic behind them -- offering a tasting does cost the winery money, and some do abuse this by tasting and not buying anything. A good compromise is to waive the fee if you buy wine from them.
