Is this description intended only for Australian wines?

Washington has some cab-syrah blends. Delille's Doyenne is described as cab-shiraz as above, but Efeste's Final-Final and Gorman's Evil Twin are both just described as "Red Blend", as are Buty's Rediviva and Truthteller's Madman (although that also has Cab F). There may well be others in Wa, and possibly Ca

I've no idea of the "correct" answer, just wondering

John

I was wondering anew about that too. I thought I'd been told some time ago that cab-shiraz blend wasn't deemed usual enough to warrant it's own identity, but wouldn't that be preferable to the elongated cabernet-shiraz in the name and red blend also included that is the set up for the Cape D'Estaings I reported as dupes a few days ago? Between WA and Aus, seems common enough.

And I seem to remember some Bx chateau coming up with syrah in their blend (new to me this year, but apparently several years now). That would be an interesting description... Although there are several instances in Wa of syrah being included in (otherwise) Bordeaux blends and petit verdot et al in (otherwise) Rhone blends

But that is a different issue

Maybe we need a new category called "Kitchen Sink Blend." :)

If we were doing this from scratch, we probably wouldn't have this or a lot of the various named blends. It made sense to us once for Australia, but you are all correct in that it is just too squicky across the world of wine. There is no really good way to remove it w/o creating chaos. If it isn't correct somewhere, we will change it to Red Blend. This is just one of the CT legacy things that come from us being incredibly naive back 15 years ago.

Thanks Andrew,

it's all part of wine being such a simple drink
