Restaurant wine lists always drive me crazy. Let me know what you guys would order from the list to accompany red meat. So far...the Chave looks to have the lowest markup, but that still gives me heartburn.

Markup seems pretty consistently about 2.2 X retail which is within my tolerance so I would buy whatever wine fits the food within my budget. When the multiplier exceeds 2.5 I typically buy a beer and let them eat their lost revenue potential.

My 2 to 2.2 was based on a scattered sampling of wi es whre I knew the approximate price. Based on other comments I went back and did a broader survey. I found prices ranging from about 1.3 to 3.3 times CT average cost. The 1.3 was the La Tache. Wineries often vary the multiplier but this one seems more random than most. Example Cakebtpread Chard at 3x and Far Niente Chard at 2x. It seems hard to generalize on this list.

Actually the Beaujolais are cheap and tasty. The SQN is actually a very fair price if you are into that. Ciacci is well priced. Vietti as well.

I would second the comment on Beaujolais. The burgaud Morgan from 2016 was fantastic. I assume the 2017 would be also. So if you are looking for a good and not very expensive alternative you could try that.

Agree with above recs
Call Rick Rubel (Somm) and chat. He is super friendly and helpful (we used to be in a tasting group). He has some stuff not on the menu, or at least he did. It's a fun list, but priced as one would expect given the location of the restaurant.

From a foreigner's perspective the food prices look quite reasonable for a high end restaurant. But the wine markups seem extreme - some cases I looked at the price was 4-6 times retail price. And, presumably, this being America, the price you actually end up paying is 20% or more above what is actually printed on the menu? Scarey stuff.

What's their corkage charge?

Looks like the best multiplier is on the DRC's. They're all less than wine-searcher retail prices.

Looks like most stuff is 3X-3.5X rather than 2.2X. I note that the red Burgs and Northern Rhones are all too young to consider. (Great selection of producers all around, though...) I agree with Eric, if I had to pick from this list I'd go with the Ciacci Brunello.

The Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage is a reasonable price for a restauraunt. True of both the white and red.

Are you staying there as well? If so, would love to hear your thoughts.

Looking at staying there over Thanksgiving holiday. We stayed at Zero George last time. Enjoyed it for the most part.

The other ones I would recommend are the Ceritas Pinots. That is a little over twice the winery price -- and they are some of the best domestic Pinots around (though I tend to prefer their Chardonnays!).

And yes, my sense was the DRC's had the least markup -- but of course that all depends on your budget. :-)

On a more serious note, if I were going there I would probably either bring my own, or go with one of the less expensive bottles -- I have a hard time spending 2-3 times retail for a wine that is not ready to drink yet, which seems to be the case for many of the Rhone, Bordeaux, and most of the others.

That stuff is legendary. The banana penna cotta is also stellar.

Is it considered bad etiquette to bring a bottle to a restaurant which has an extensive wine selection?

It is only considered bad if the restaurant has the same wine and vintage in their cellar. Some may argue that the vintage doesn't matter.

The La Tache is the best value on the list, but still way outside my price range. I'd be tempted by the 2014 Belle Pente PN, Burgaud Cote du Py Morgon, Idlewild Barbera, and maybe the Tempier La Tourtine.

I would call and ask -- but usually it is what Blue Shorts says.

This is a special place where Le Tache gets the best value nod.

I walked into Peninsula Grill on Saturday evening planning to pair the 2012 Domaine Tempier Bandol La Tourtine with rack of lamb, but unfortunately this was out of stock and they just hadn't removed it from the online menu.

I regrouped and decided to go the seafood route with scallops and a 2016 Rivers-Marie Joy Road Chardonnay, but again was informed that the wine was out of stock.

The somm recommended a 2015 Fisher Vineyards, Mountain Estate Chardonnay as a substitution to the Rivers-Marie. I was not familiar with Fisher wines, but went with it after striking out twice on my own. Fortunately the wine was excellent and paired well with my scallops and my wife's chicken dish.

Overall we had an excellent evening and finished strong after stumbling out of the gate.

About ten years ago, I had the same thing happen at The American Restaurant here in Kansas City.

Had a wine all picked out, and the sommelier said is was sold out.

But being a former Boy Scout – and keeping "be prepared" in mind – I had a fall-back wine already chosen. Once again, the sommelier said it was sold out.

He gave us a recommendation as an alternative, and like you, we went with it. Good choice.

Looking it up on the list, I found it to be a bottle twice the cost of my original, but when the final tab came, he billed us only for the cost of that first choice.

If I were a gambler, I would bet that this "sold out" situation happens more often than anyone thinks. If you side with the establishment, your excuse is it's very hard to keep up with an ever-evolving / quick changing inventory. If you're a jaded consumer, you might even go as far as thinking it's bait & switch. Where you fall on that scale is not for me to say!
