I have a pretty diverse collection, but the sales are in full effect. The chain store near me has the Chappellet 2017 on sale for $235 and the 2017 Dominus for $215 which is the better deal? I am a huge Ridge ATP fan and Far Niente, I am a member of both of their clubs. So any feedback would be much appreciated.

When you say 2017 Chappellet, I'm going to assume that's their high end Pritchard Hill because that's highway robbery for the Signature!

The Dominus will be much more in line with your palate given the examples you liked. Chappellet has gotten more & more 'modern' (read: bold) in the last few years.

Lol, sorry it is the Chappellet Pritchard Hill Estate Vineyard. I received another response from Keith Levenberg saying go for 2016 Montrose or Pichon-Baron thoughts?

I'm the wrong person to ask about Bordeaux.

That's what I would do...

Not sure this is an "either or". I have 2017 Dominus, and 2016 Pichon-Baron and Montrose in my cellar. Dominus was the priciest, but all the bottles I have had have been remarkable. The 2016 Montrose, from what I have read, will need the most time in the cellar of the 3.

I haven’t tried either in 2017.

2017 was a vintage with heat spikes (which can leave the grapes a bit shriveled and yet green), followed by the first of massive fires (top places discard tainted fruit, and even fruit where there was no evident taint yet some risk, but this drove down the quantities harvested, and blends may not be completely typical because this forces the winemaker to use fruit they brought in early). You need to purchase rather carefully.

From what I’ve read, Dominus harvested early and apparently made one of the best wines from the vintage. Chappellet isn’t rated even close to the same level in 2017. Given the pricing, go for Dominus, but plan to age it for a few years before trying it. It will need a long decant when you do open a bottle.

I wouldn't spend that money on '17 unless you really want to have a sample of the vintage. Prices on '17 will continue to drop, especially as more '18 starts hitting shelves and they have to move the '17 and I think in 5-10 years we'll be able to pick these up for well below release. Although as KPB mentions and based on the Vinous and JD score it looks like the Dominus is a top wine of the vintage. Both are available online at lower prices.
