I prefer Bordeaux blends and am really asking mainly about red wines, including Burgundy wines.

I might even consider buying a Durand from Havv's for $75.66 or so.

The wines could be kept at 55 degrees or so in an old Eurocave.

I'm going to recommend a Bordeaux that was recommended to me by a Berserker who seemed to know my palate pretty well after meeting him only once.

Chateau La Dominque

1989 was my favorite of the vintages I tried, but 1986, 1995, 1997, and 1998 were all very good and easily found under $200.

Richard, you who is so into ratings might be interested in this on a site called Scam Detector which pops up when one looks at your source for a Durand: "We looked at 53 influential factors to see if havvs.shop is legit. The Scam Detector's algorithm gives this business the following rank: 39.9/100."

Not to hijack the thread, but could you give me an overview of the differences in regular wine searcher and the pro version?

2009 Larcis Ducasse is $114 at B21 and is amazing right now. Absolute steal. Compare that to overpriced Napa wines at $125-$150 plus on release you can’t drink for years. Just got an email offering 2018 Paul Hobbs Coombsville Cab for $130. Yeah Right…..NOT!!!

Ouch ... I was going to suggest La Mission Haut Brion. I picked up a few bottles of 2003 @$150 2-3 years ago but prices have almost doubled.

From Bordeaux, I'd go with Lynch Bages; the cooler vintages can be had for under $200 and probably will be at the drinking windows sooner than later. My second wine would probably be Smith Haut Lafite.

Outside of Bordeaux, a bottle of 2008 Chapoutier Les Greffieux earlier this year was phenomenal. Again, 2008 was a cool vintage. It may not be a 30+ year wine, but who cares? Picked up some at $100 per.

Asking this group for advice like this is one of the great advantages of this group IMO for I believe you will get great answers. However, after ALL of your claims that you NEVER buy wine that doesn't meet your QPR formula criteria based ON YOUR PERSONAL rating, this request seems to be self contradictory!

Wine Searcher shows several vintages available for under $200 a bottle, including the 1986 from a reseller in California and on auction running on Wine Bid:

There's a bottle of 1989 offered by a reseller in Florida too:

Auctions can be a great source for mature vintages. Just be sure they can get the wine to you in Cali if you go that route.
I’ve been able to pick up some Y2K era Rhône’s and mid-90s California Syrah for under $50 over the past year.

Maybe he's seen the light, and the errors of his ways

I would definitely get a Domaine de Chevalier Rouge... i hear those are solid wines with some age..

Many thanks, everyone, for all the helpful answers. Sourdough, I thought I would make an exception for 6 bottles.

I will keep the bottles at 55 degrees F. for some time before I try any.

Jenise, many thanks for the info. I will try broken corkscrew removal per spiral corkscrew or muslin removal once more before getting a Durand.

mye. I greatly prefer 2015, 2016 and 2018 versions of D de C Rouge to older versions, but really like the 2014. Even the 2011 and 2012 D de C wines are very good, and I never had the 2010. Maybe I will try some older D de C.

There are several. The major one is that with the free service you only get to see a partial list of suppliers, with priority given to "Sponsors" - i.e. suppliers who pay to have their listings on Wine Searcher.
Beyond that you get the ability to filter the list of suppliers that you want to see - I exclude quite a few that are auctions, tend not to actually have the stock in Hong Kong, have delivery policies that don't work for me, and so on. You can also set alerts to be notified if a specific wine becomes available (optionally at a specific price). And you can see a 5-year price history for the wine.

The following two screenshots for the Chateau La Dominique here in Hong Kong illustrate some of those points. The first is logged in to my Pro account, which shows all the offers available, but excludes a load of suppliers that I don't wish to see (mainly Millesima). The second shows the non-Pro output. Note specifically the box at the bottom "Search results prioritize 37 sponsor listings. Please login or subscribe to PRO to view all 83 results for the location you've chosen."

Also apologies for a minor hijack of the thread, but curious Paul why not Millesima? Here they are my go-to for Bordeaux.

cheers,
Sean

I'm really only interested in buying wines available in Hong Kong now. And also I'm not into high-priced (US$150+) wines, which is a lot of what the sell. They advertise their global stock in all their markets, so normally you have to wait weeks or months to get it. And their minimum order for free delivery is too high for me. I get that for the "en primeur / buy to cellar/ buy as an investment" market that this may work, but that's simply not me.

I get my 88 year old father several bottles of aged Chateauneuf du Pape each year. Aged Brunello di Montalcino is always a treasure and often very reasonably priced. Every wine cellar needs some vintage Champagne also.

If you branch out to Nebbiolo, Chambers always has some great, affordable older bottles.

Although as a cheapskate I usually pay no more than $100 for any wine, I really consider Bordeaux blends scoring 100 points to be worth about $180 nowadays. I still divide by 1.107 (or 1.108) for each point down. 85-point wines would be worth about $39,
