I was looking at my inventory and what I would possibly like to buy for 2020 BDX as I will skip 2021 but again buy some more of the 2022. Since I have a limited knowledge of aged Bordeaux and which Chateaus and which regions might be better suited for my personal pleasure.

First and foremost, I think I am reducing the number of bottles I want to order. Maybe the most affordable BDX I dont mind ordering a case. The Laroque, Tour St. Cristophe, Lilian Landouys, etc are there to be bought by the case and I am happy to offer those wines to visits and family on normal ocasions. But I want to buy some other wines by maybe increments of 3 and possibbly even some 6 packs. Ive been a fan of Conseillante, VCC, Pavie, Leoville Poyferre , amongst quite a few more. The problem is that now I dont want to buy wines to cellar them for 20 years, I want them to be ready by age 8-10 but that would be perfectly fine to cellar them longer if I decide to do that. So, I don't want to do any infanticides but I want to buy 20-25 bottles of great pedigree that could be enjoyed sooner than later. Maybe buy 6-8 different Chateaus at 3 bottles each one that are good candidates for medium cellaring. I am looking for suggestions that might be more of my alley : Fruit, hedonistic, sexy, and that "in your face" quality that I like ( Troplong Mondot, Leoville Poyferre, Feytit Clinet). ANy suggestions about not 40-50 year old wines but rather 6-12 years and that could be in the $100-$250 range I will be very happy to read you

The first red I thought of was Pontet Canet, although I can't speak to the quality of their 2020 offering. Others know the $200+ range better than me but given your parameters I'll give you a half dozen in the $100 - $150 range and let the CTers edit my list.

Pauillac
Clerc Milon
Lynch Bages

Saint Julien
Gruaud Larose

Margaux
d'Issan

Pessac-Leognan
Smith Haut-Lafitte

Saint-Emilion
Canon La Gaffeliere

Happy hunting!

I would check out Jeff Leve’s The Wine Cellar Insider. Click on the Menu….Select Bordeaux Wine…scroll down to Bordeaux Vintage Guide. Scroll down and on the very left side of the page are the Vintages by year. If you select 2020 Bordeaux Vintage you will see ratings and buying guide for: St Estephe, Pauillac, St Julien, Margaux, Pessac Leognan, etc. etc.for every Major Bordeaux Appelation.

I usually cross reference Jeff’s ratings with CT scores. Pricing is readily available on Wine Searcher to see those within your particular budget. You already know you like St Julien (Leoville Poyferre), Pomerol (VCC, Feytit Clinet & La Conseillante), St Emilion (Pavie, Tour St Christophe & Laroque) & St Estephe (Lilian Ladouys).

You’d probably like a lot of the Appellations you didn’t mention. All of them are pretty good IMO. Jeff’s website is a great start and lots of information.

Eduardo I think that after tasting the 2020 Bordeaux that most wines will be ready to drink sooner than later. Pichon Baron would be my choice, as they are well made and not over the top stylistically.

I just got my EP offers for Beau-Sejour Becot for the 2022 vintage, if I wasn't so old would jump on them. Every critic loved it as they have added more Cab Franc in this vintage. Scores high, but more importantly the tasting notes make it sound delicious.

Besides Pichon-Baron, would add Pichon-Lalande to your list to buy 3 of. They are on a roll.

Meyney, Tronquoy-Lalande, and Gloria are ALWAYS worth checking out at the low end.

Agree that you don't have to wait forever to enjoy Bdx these days, with the occasional exception. Have fun tasting and buying Eduardo!

Thanks for all the answers. Many of the wines suggested, although great, requiere a lot of cellaring and thats something I want to skip. Lynch Bages is not a wine that I would try to open early for example. I will continue to look and also decide if I want to buy the 2020s or wait for the 2022s. I have a lot of inventory of 2019s and maybe it would be wise to pause and skip a few vintages although I am not sure if 2022s would be better than 2020s.

Eduardo have you considered attending one of the Unions des Grands Cru tastings here in North America? The tour dates should be posted later in the year, and typically you can purchase tickets a few months prior. Chicago typically hosts the tasting the last week in January (cold time of year) and it has traditionally been hosted by Binnys who will sell tickets to the public. I've gone to something like 17 of the last 20 tastings, so consider tasting the wines yourself in person and maybe taking a few days to visit which ever city you choose to attend. The wines tasted at the event are available to purchase as futures, but shipping laws could vary of course.

Edouardo... If you haven't read this yet, it might help you to find wines in your style and budget. You cN read notes for close to 1,000 different Bordeaux from 2020 ... https://www.thewinecellarinsider.com/2023/03/2020-bordeaux-complete-wine-buying-guide-in-bottle-tasting-report/

I’m not seeing how any of the very top wines from 2020 would be drinking at their best before 2040 or 2045. All the very best wines from Bordeaux need 20-25 years to peak. Why not splurge on wines like the 2005 Cheval Blanc, and with 2020, focus on midrange wines that still can deliver a lot of pleasure?

Agree 100% Ken. Why not buy 05, 09, 10, 15 & 16’s that are drinkable much earlier and are just as good as the 20’s? 1st & most 2nd Growths will be out of the price range (except Poyferre, Barton) but there are many good, reasonably priced wines in these years. Especially the 15 & 16. I just saw 15 Leoville Barton for $99 and bought some 15 Leoville Poyferre for $66 at Hart Davis Hart 30% Sale.

Looking at the 2022 Bordeaux futures prices and I think these people are on crack. 2020 was at least affordable and 2021 seems reasonable.

They are playing catch up with Napa. The best en primeur prices were of the 2019, Clinet for $85 La Conseillante $160, Troplong $90.
