Just got an email from Cayuse for my shipping bill. If you have a Cayuse shipment you may want to check your bill. I suspect they input the wrong sales tax percentage so all of Texas is likely to be affected. But who knows. In any event Texas Sales Tax is not 76.2%. Cayuse’s email follows:

Salut! We shipped your Cayuse wines yesterday, you should have received tracking information from UPS. We charged your credit card $118.07, which reflects UPS shipping charges of $67.00 and state sales tax of $51.07.

Tax on the value of the wine, not the shipping...

No doubt you are right! They should point that out. Presenting the tax with the shipping fee with no additional comments does not provide appropriate context!

You were charged any tax on the wine at the time you were charged for the wine.

Cayuse only estimates tax at the time of purchase (which the invoice does say), due to it being a future sale, and required taxes can change over time. They don't charge tax on the wine until they ship it. So the tax you see on the shipping bill, is the tax on the wine purchase.

At the time you place your order, you're only charged for the wine itself and the invoice says:

"Estimated Shipping and Tax:

Shipping and tax will be calculated when your wines ship.

Below is only an estimate of the tax and shipping charges."
