19 closing in on 20.

Didn’t you join the day or week CT went public?

The same hour??

Not quite guys. Reasonably close. 4/13/2004. Member 255. Believe it or not I didn't even know Eric had started CT until Winetex emailed me and said I should go ahead and sign up so I could secure my wineismylife monikor before somebody else snagged it. I did but even then it took me a while to get my inventory loaded. I was still doing everything in Excel.

Close to even steven for me, there is some 20 bottles of vintage port arriving and probably some "missing, presumed drunk" not yet accounted for. So about 300 bottles each way.

Consumed - 86

(Good reason for the low consumption level, which probably accounts for the high purchases too - The first four months of the year saw me recovering from Chemo and Radiotherapy for tongue cancer, with a total lack of taste buds at that time, which gradually came back, as did the consumption as we neared the Christmas period).

Wow, that sounds terrible. I hope you have it behind you now!

Cheers to good health, Liam. And getting your sense of taste back!

My stats:
171 Purchased
102 Consumed

Makes sense since I really just got a cellar/stash going at the start of the year. I predict a much more balanced ratio in 2024.

My stats:
365 purchased
190 consumed

Another way to look at this is the cost of purchases vs. the value of wine consumed.

purchased: $37,943 $104/bottle average
value consumed: $10,815 $56.92/bottle average

Both of these sets of statistics made me a little uneasy and show that I need to think about my purchasing and drinking habits. I'm buying too much and what I buy costs twice as much as what I drink. I know inflation plays a part in this because the wines I drink are aged and aren't as valuable as the cost of their replacements. However; it shows me I'm reluctant to drink some of my more valuable wines. So my new mantra will be Life is short, drink the good stuff!

Even though our cellar out—including gifted bottles, etc.—reached an all time high, so did our purchasing, which was still nearly double our consumption.

Since we started this year (and, let's be honest, the last 5 years) with a wildly overstuffed cellar, such as it is, it's only worse now. At some point, something's gotta give as we're probably now at the place where our cellar, as it is now, contains 8-9 years worth of wine, even if we didn't add another bottle.

Beginning to be a bit embarrassing, really, so I definitely think I'm on the naughty list for sure.

We need to do the same. Every year in late November, I put together a wine tree, to encourage enjoying of some of our better bottles across the festive season and every year I end up putting many of the most expensive bottles right back in my cellar come January because it never felt "special enough" to open them. I'm one who tends to "use up" the OK and less expensive, before getting to the truly good or more expensive stuff way too often. But you're absolutely right, life is short, stop saving wine (or anything else) because it's "too good."

I wonder if you redid the value of bottles consumed at current vintage prices the adjusted value would be much closer to bottles purchased? If you're drinking some of those wines 10 years after purchase, I can easily imagine that current vintage prices may have doubled in that time.

306 purchased vs 135 drank/gifted. Not as bad as previous years. Massively slowed down purchases.

Consumption down because we weren’t home for 16 weeks this year.

Final count on 2023 for consumption was 157 bottles....which oddly enough was the same in 2022 & 2021. At least I've been consistent!

Purchased 318
Consumed 299
Plus 18 bottles for the year

I still have about 1700 bottles and my goal for the year was to be down 100 bottles. Once again I failed.

2024 is the year I will succeed!

You just have to not answer your wife’s calls from CostCo telling you about the wine deals there.

Purchased 297 - down 35% from 2022
Consumed 243 - down 25% from 2022

The crazy number 2023 saw a 52% reduction in consumed bottles compared to 2021. 😱

Purchased 167 (lowest of the 20's)
Consumed 86 (ditto)

I'd like to say moderation in all things set in, but work crushed me in the fall, leading to zero purchased in October with little consumption.
