This is the first of a series of posts about recommended wines at various price points, both categories of wines and specific wines. Not everyone has access to every wines due to shipping restrictions, various laws, geographic location, etc., so in some cases broad categories might be more useful than particular wines and vintages.

There are a lot of terrific wines under $30.

Almost all whites my wife and I buy are under $30. We prefer dry, crisp wines. The Loire valley is terrific, Sancerre, muscadet, fume blanc and others. These are also very consistent across vintages and producer. We also like Albariño from Spain. You can find some Chablis around the top end of this range, e.g. Fever’s Champs Royaux.

For reds, Italy is a great source of quality wines across many price points. Chianti and Chianti Classico are usually under $30, though there can also be some duds. Some of the better producers are Felsina, Fontodi and Antonioni. If you have access to a good wine shop, ask for advise and try several alternatives.

Most folks think Bordeaux is very expensive, but there are also a lot of lower priced options. Recently I bought 2020 C. Marjosse for under $15. Again, ask for help in a good shop.

There are many other options for good wines under $30 from many parts of the world; I’m sure others will chime in with suggestions.

I'll post some easy answers for white.

Riesling.... in particular Max Ferd Richter. They have quite a few Kabinetts and Spatlesens under $30. Our favorites are the Veldenzer Elisenberg, Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenurhrb, and Erdener Treppchen vineyards. They also do a great job with Graacher-Himmelriech in this range (a much lower price point than J.J. Prüm).

Vouvray.... Domaine Pichot le Peu de Moriette. Tasty stuff.

Chablis.... Joseph Drouhin Vaudon. Gotta be the best bargain for White Burgundy.

I'm in 100% agreement on Fontodi and Felsina.

Along these lines, I've saved some views ranked by scores in similar dollar ranges. With ~900 wines, it's one way to get a quick view of "better" wines in a given $$$ range. Also, sometimes CT scores must be taken with a grain or block of salt as we've all come across $14 99-poijnt wines. I typically ignore any too high scores when there's only 1-2 raters.

With that, from my cellar under $30 the following have multiple raters, >90 pts, and most appear on the WineSearcher box to be available at <$30 but I didn't verify this...

2018 Chateau Laroque GC (St Emilion),
2017 Sebastien Dampt Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons,
2020 Denis Race Chablis 1er Cru Montmains,
2018 Yohan Lardy Moulin-à-Vent Vieilles Vignes de 1903,
2016 DeLille Cellars Chaleur Estate Blanc,
2019 Tiare Collio Sauvignon,
2015 Paul Jourdan Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve de Leonie,
2016 Marchesi Mazzei Chianti Classico Ser Lapo Riserva,
2020 Domaine des Chasseignes Sancerre Aurore Dezat,
2018 Domaine du Pavillon de Chavannes Côte de Brouilly Cuvée des Ambassades,
2016 Poliziano Vino Nobile di Montepulciano,
2018 Bedrock Wine Co. Old Vine Zinfandel,
2019 Domaine de [/right]la Cotelleraie Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil,
and many sauternes.

2022 Martinborough Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc Home Block (New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough)
2019 Oxer Bastegieta Bizkaiko Txakolina Marko (Spain, País Vasco, Bizkaiko Txakolina)
2021 Sibiliana Lucido Terre Siciliane Eughenes (Italy, Sicily, Terre Siciliane)
2021 Terrazze dell'Etna Terre Siciliane Ciuri (Italy, Sicily, Terre Siciliane)
2022 Bodegas Valdesil Godello Sobre Lías (Spain, Galicia, Valdeorras)
2019 Villa Raiano Fiano di Avellino Ventidue (Italy, Campania, Fiano di Avellino DOCG)
2022 Les Vins de Vienne Côtes du Rhône Les Laurelles (France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône)

Also 1 rosé
2022 Tenuta Guado al Tasso (Antinori) Bolgheri Scalabrone (Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri)

and 2 reds

right off the bat, German Riesling. Nearly all producers have an entry-level trocken that's under $30 --- buy from the best producers, and you'll be doing really good. Buy some anonymous no-name, and -- well -- you're rolling the dice.

We were at a local wine event...and it was blind. One of the standouts was a Portugal Red wine called Silk & Spice for $17Cdn or probably closer to $10-12USD. Full bodied and would punch above it's weight for sure.

2020 Matua Pinot Noir Rose for $18Cdn or whatever you'd pay in USD...just a beautiful wine

Severn Terraces Sauvignon Blanc is a gem from Marlborough, New Zealand for under this cap

Poggio Al Tesoro Cassiopea Rosato and Poggio Al Tesoro Solosole Vermentino is a wonderful wine wine under this cap

Atteca 2015 and 2018 Garnacha Spanish Reds are a really wonderful wine

Caprera Le Vashe Red (Italian Red) ..if you can source, this is a gem of a wine

Here are a couple of my favorite whites in this price range from Italy

De Sanctis Frascati Superiore Abelos
Ottella Lugana Le Creete

Each of these is the second level from the producer and, in my opinion, a worthy upgrade to the entry level white. For the most part these will be the same from vintage to vintage as the wine maker is committed to a certain level of quality for this product.

Does anyone know of a Vernaccia di San Gimignano in this price range in the USA that I can look for??

Recent pursuit of wines under 13.5% ABV yielded these gems:
2022 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir Whole Cluster - $20, 13.2%
2022 The Great Oregon Wine Company Pinot Noir Rascal - $15, 13.0%, Screwcap

I have been utterly blown away by the white wines below $30 from Alto Adige in Italy, especially gewurztraminer, muller-thurgau, & kerner. Dry Hungarian furmint can also be great value in this price range. Likewise for some cortese from the Gavi DOCG in Piedmont.

de Negoce Cabs from Napa, Sonoma, Walla Walla, Red Mountain, Columbia Valley. I avoided de Negoce for a couple years after getting some flops on Syrah and Viognier from Washington. I leapt back in this past few months and have overbought, but very pleased with every Cab and a couple of Merlots. These are not necessarily the top rate Cabs from any prodcuer/region, and the marketing is deceptive, but for $12-30 to get a Cab with character and sense of place, these are good buys. I avoid the "futures" mostly and relied on CT review for bottle shop wines that came up for sales events 25-30% off, and so far no clunkers in this category. Not as impressed with Syrah, Pinot, or whites from de Negoce.

Picked up the OG N.40 from Diamond Mountain and was impressed for the measly $22 (?) spent per 750ml bottle. I see in the CT Tasting Notes that some familiar screen names bought this besides me. Maybe Paul and Bob will jump in to confirm the value.
