Hi Folks,

Some time in the near future (a month or so), I will be popping a bottle of 2004 Petrus.
I am not accustomed to drinking wines of this caliber (at least in terms of cost), and I solicit advice about how to serve it.
How long beforehand should I open it?
Assuming it is decanted, when should this occur?
I assume that there is no need to drink it quickly.

Any and all ideas, suggestions, comments, and so forth will be appreciated.

Cheers,
John

2004 Petrus is toxic. I will give you my address where I can dispose of it properly.

Enjoy!

2004 is an interesting vintage and comments are emerging that it was a bit under-estimated by many and some of the wines are beginning to shine.

The notes from 2017 and 2018 in Cellar tracker indicated it hit its stride between 40 minutes and 2 hours after opening, so I would want to stand this bottle up at least a day before serving to allow the sediment to settle and decant at the beginning of the meal for sediment which should allow you to follow the wine as it develops over time.

Just my two pennies, I would invite others with more experience with this specific vintage to chime in as I have absolutely 0 experience with a 2004 Petrus

I agree with JMC. I don’t have experience with Petrus, and I would read what CT notes say. My only other thought was maybe purchase and drink a right bank Merlot the day before to calibrate your palate.

Hope it shows well!

When I’m not sure about whether or not to decant a wine I will decant is a couple/few hours before drinking. I’ll taste it every 15 minutes or so to see where it is. If it needs more time keep it in the decanter. If it’s ready I pour back in the bottle and put the cork back in until you are ready to drink it.

Brilliant! Never thought of that - thank you sir!
