Any opinions on the 2007 Merry Edwards fall release (Coopersmith, Meredith Estate, Flax, Tobia Gle, and Klop Ranch.)  My only experience with Merry Edwards is the 2005 RRV which I found at a local store, a rarity on release.  I received the ordering info today and have been enjoying the KB poll thread.  Shipping costs are a bit high, $28 for 3-6 bottles and $46 for 7-12.

I don't have much experience with their pinots.  However, last week when I visited their winery I tasted most if not all their of their pinot offerings.  They were all very good.  Not surprisingly, their most expensive pinots -- Klop Ranch and Olivet -- were head and shoulders above the others.  I bought a few bottles of each.  2007 is supposed to be a big year for RRV pinots.  On a side note, their 2008 sauvignon blanc is very tasty IMO.

Hi Eric,

I became a huge Merry Edwards fan after doing a tasting there last summer. Sounds like you may have received the same mailing I did. All I can say is that I think their pinot's are among the best I've had. Somewhat a mix between a burgundian and CA style I find them to have a real sense of place with an authentic earthiness to them. I've not had the 2007 but am planning on purchasing my "allocation" based on their previous efforts.

Bottom line, I think you'll find them worth the money.

Peter

Just went and read the KB thread. I've never had the pleasure but from others are saying it seems clear to me that we're talking two extremely different types of pinot here.

Pete,

If you want, I will be happy to bring a KB to our tasting in October.  Just say the word.

Now that's a very kind offer. Of course, then I'd have to bring a Merry Edwards

I think that's a great idea.  The pasta course is slated for "medium bodied reds".  How cool would it be to compare the styles?!  (I'm in if you're in, but beware, you will forfeit my Sauternes contribution.)  Still, I think a Merry Edwards will be an awesome contribution to the evening, and if the group approves, I will bring a KB.  Fair warning, I think you will be getting short shrift. Then again, cgrimes may bring a Bergstrom Pinot, so there is still some fun in comparing.

Hmmmmm, I'd feel bad if there are already folks looking forward to the Sauternes but it does sound like an interesting comparison. I'm in unless there are any major protests.

Honestly, the way I feel about KB I'd throw it in for good measure.  You have access to my cellar; let me know what you want.  I have no single vineyard bottlings...go for it. (At our tasting you'll only get a teeny taste anyway...)

When I started buying her pinots you had to pick them up from her garage. I have about 4 cases of various vintages in the cellar now. I think the best value is the RRV. My favorite is the Klopp. We drank a 2003 Klopp a couple of days ago and it was still great. I tased the Meridith Estate recently and it was delicious, but not that much better than the RRV.

I have a case of 2007 KB sitting on the flor due to insufficient storage space.  I enjoyed the '06 KBs we have had so far and the '07s have great reviews from WS.  I may have to pick up a few bottles of the Merry Edwards.

I have had RRV and Sonoma Coast and was very impressed with the current vintage. Less impressed with Coopersmith. I discovered M.E. while dining at a Las Vegas restaurant (Restaurant Charlie) and it was highly recommended by my waiter.   My wife love's the Pinot's that come from M.E.

We tried their 08 Sav. Blanc. and it was rather good.

I received a very polite letter from Merry Edwards winery stating that if I did not purchase any wine this year that I would be removed from the mailing list. Any more thoughts on the 2007 wines?

I've tried a few of the 07s. I think the Coopersmith was disappointing considering the price. Same with the Meredith. The Russian River Pinot was excellent and probably the best QPR. The best values over the years, and I think continuing in 07 are the Russian River Pinot, Klopp Ranch and Olivet Lane. I've enjoyed the Sonoma Coast in the past as well, but have stopped buying them. For a few dollars more, I like the Russian River much more.

I've been buying Merry Edwards wines since you had to pick them up from her garage and currently have 44 bottles in the cellar. That being said, I would never buy any wines based on a threat. If you look at her website now, the following are available to anyone with an internet connection, so I wouldn't be too worried about not being able to buy them in the future.

2007 Coopersmith Pinot Noir
2007 Meredith Estate Pinot Noir
2007 Flax Vineyard Pinot Noir
2007 Tobias Glen Pinot Noir
2007 Klopp Ranch Pinot Noir
2007 Olivet Lane Pinot Noir
2007 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
2007 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
2006 Angel Wing Pinot Noir

I'll buy some 07s because I think she is an exceptional winemaker and I'm sure I won't be disappointed, not because I'm worried she might drop me from a list.

Clint,
Definitely was not a threatening letter. I believe it was last year that I also received an elaborate pamphlet from the winery, but not this year. I appreciate the advice and will have to consider where I am going to spend my Pinot money; Merry Edwards, the upcoming KB release, or elsewhere.

I opened an 04 Merry last night. It was one she made with El Molino High School as part of their program. It was delicious.

I once bought a case of the 05 RRV from two local stores. Not sure how they had the wines for sale, but they did. We drank the last bottle in December, very good pinot.

I have her Pinots going back to 2003.  Just picked up some Klop ranch and Merrideth estate.  I did not buy the 07 Olivet lane as I do not want to encourage the $60 bottles.  Her Whites have been/are magnificent also.  My favorite RRV ponits.

I bought those bottles in the past. The stores were Minks and Smyrna World of Beverage (which is doing very well with some of their wines lately).

I have only been to minks once in the last year. I stopped going there when one of their wine guys left. I have a fairly good relationship with the guys at Smyrna World of Beverage.

I usually go to the Ansley Kroger in Midtown which has a huge high end wine cellar or Tower Liquor.  I'm up that way once in a while, I always like going to new stores.

Based on this thread, I went and bought a case of assorted Merry Edwards 2007 Pinots myself. Should start posting notes in about May!
