Not the music I grew up with but the music which grew on me.

I think they're alright ... seen 'em in concert once - they put on quite the show.

Normally if I'm in the mood for that type of music I'll turn to:
Skinny Puppy
NIN
Pitchshifter (old stuff)
Ministry

Can you place a few youtube links with your favorite songs? I never heard of NIN, my music education ended somewhere in the end of 70's, and only recently I discovered Marylin Manson and Metallica.

serge,

NIN = Nine Inch Nails. Trent Reznor being the creative force behind it. Now have you heard of 'em?

I'm going to throw TOOL out there as it's one of the few bands of the genre that I really like (and I know many would say they don't belong in the metal category) along with NIN. I remember the day when NIN was considered techno/disco and Ministry really was disco!

KISS - couldn't stand 'em when I was a teen.... now I'd love to catch their new tour - reports are it's awesome and I think it would be inspiring to see those old guys rockin

Heavy Metal. I've always kind of thought of it as dinner music for people that aren't very hungry

Such a broad swath of music lovers/wine drinkers.  An old Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Creadence Clearwater, hell just about any old R&R tune, gets the old memories back.  Heavy Metal never got my interest, I can just turn my machines on in the shop and get a better thrill.  Our son-in-law is the sound engineer for Sonic Youth and we go to their concerts whenever they play here.  The first time we went to see them, we became grand parents of twins the same night.  We were definitely the oldest by a couple of decades.  I can now listen to their music and appreciate it, but I do like melody.  Now I love Opera which some may liken to classical HM.  A good friend who is more of a rocker has also started going to the Opera, there is hope out there.  Chamber Music with a definite leaning to the new music and world music scene now gets the brain activated.  Lately I have developed an appreciation of Hispanic music:  Cuban, Tango, Salsa and any combo gets the old body moving.  We have band "Pink Martini" that has a following of young and old alike.  They play a amalgam from lounge, Hispanic, world to pop classical, catch them if you can, I don't think you will be disappointed.  They play NYC and Europe as often as Portland.

to be clear, my suggestions in post #2 were made not because those are "metal" bands, but because they are "industrial" bands, like Rammstein. If anyone is looking for recs. on good "metal" bands, then my list would be much much longer, and entirely different. Industrial isn't really "my thing," but I do enjoy it on occasion.

there is industrial-type techno ... of course, if by "techno" you mean "electronic" music, since "techno" is one of the gabillions "electronic" subsets. Rammstein is NOT industrial metal, not industrial techno

Talk about unexpected thread of the year lol.

Yup I'm a fan, altho whenever the little synth bit pops up in Du Hast I always reach for the cell phone. Music is my other passion besides the wine and is a very broad church. I started playing classical piano at 5 and more or less grew up with the likes of Mozart, Beethoven, Rachmaninov et al so these remain firm faves. In my teens I got the rock thing with Metallica, Iron maiden and the like and in my 30s I started to slip into country. As I type this I have Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis by Ralph Vaughan Williams on, which will probably become Drowning Pool in a short while...

As with wine music is a very subjective thing. A very wise person told me (shortly after a rant from me on the worthlessness of manufactured pop) that there is no right or wrong with music - if a song/piece brings pleasure to just one person then it is entirely valid and justified in its existence. I couldn't agree more.

I'd never heard of them: couldn't pigeonhole them either - a cleaned up, more melodic Slipknot (no not really).
Well I enjoyed learning about them, and their German was almost simple enough for me to undertsand the lyrics (obviously designed for an English speaking audience).
I guess the wine analogy makes some sense:
There are vast numbers of varieties, some with similarities, some shockingly different
People keep on innovating even if it's been around thousands of years
One persons fav. will be someone elses poison
If you like it that's OK

Now some of my fav's

Genesis
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8EkU3Ta5Ys&feature=related (remember it was 1974 and live - Gabriel era - long intro.)

Anti-Flag

Bad Religion

Alkaline Trio

Khaman, talking about Beethoven at the age of 5.
We've seen the movie yesterday which you might enjoy tremendously,
it's about you!

Just to add a little classical cred. I like this -

Regrets - I can't play any musical instruments; so Khamen you play, Paul and I will drink quietly in awe.

Beethoven usually follows on a bit laer Serge, 5 is pushing it unless you're one of this hyper-prodigies - usual route is to kick off with Mozart to get a sound technique together, then you branch out. That's not saying Mozart's stuff is necessarily easier than Beethoven, it's just more classically structured so great for getting your scales and arpeggios sorted out as a novice. Of course the fun is going back to it once you have a strong technique and are playing to an advanced level - then you start to really see how clever Mozart really was. I suppose a wine analogy would be learning what cabernet tastes like by tasting 20 year-old Lafite with no frame of reference. You can enjoy it at the time but how much more do you get from it when you have more experience of cabernet around the world?

Khamen, I started on Classical music at the age of 2, my older sister was taking the piano lessons and terrorized the whole building, I couldn't listen to Classical music 'til the age of 17, she scarred me good :)

Serger,

Love Rammstein, first heard of them on a trip to Russia. I will also echo NIN, saw them a couple of years ago, great show.

GG, when I left USSR they were not even on the radar screen!
;)

Did you see uncensored version of their latest hit?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxrap3Ojchw

Youtube removes the unCensored version within 30 mins, one should be lucky and fast to catch it :)

Not industrial or metal, but in the realm of artistic melody coupled with moments of noise, few can surpass Radiohead in my book (OK computer and later).  Really quality stuff appreciated by all kinds of listeners.

On another note, I was watching the Woodstock Director's Cut the other night, and I have forgotten how good Jefferson Airplane was, especially live.  If I could go back in time, I would love to have seen one of their Fillmore shows.

Rammstein is not a band that you'd think a wine aficionado would like. I also like Front Line Assembly. This music I can only listen to in the car alone. Some of this music I find unlistenable, it has to strike some balance, like wine.

How exactly Rammstein and Wine are mutually exclusive?
I don't get it.....

...even Khrushchev who banged the podium at UN promising USA all harms had
"Magnificent Seven" with Yul Brynner as his favorite movie of all times!

Ok, how is this, Rammstein is an uncommon band for anyone, esp over 40.

:) This is better. Birger was the first one to introduce them to me, and my young German friend added some to it.

Next thing you say that it is uncommon for an over 40 Jew to have under 30 real German friend? :)

I respectfully disagree. Rammstein has received rather extensive radio-play ... at least in the U.S. they have.

Agree with the quality of Radiohead, and The Bends (pre-OK) is great as well!
