2004 Lazzeretti Brunello di Montalcino is a nice one. I think I paid about $40 for mine. A little lower would be pretty attractive. It's not ready to drink and needs considerable breathing if opened now.

Great vintage. Several of those names are well regarded generally, but not wines that I buy myself. Altesino, Argiano, Casanova di Neri and Lisini are the "biggest" names there, I think.

2004 is a wonderful vintage for Brunello.  I've tried several, including a few on that list, and they've all been terrific.

In general, wines from the southern portion of the region (which is most of them, by the way) will be a bit more fruit-forward and will be drinkable sooner.  The northern wines tend to be a bit leaner and greener in the early years, but they have the acidity to age a long time.  They're all wonderful, though, and personally I think they represent one of the best value wines around, even at US $50-75/bottle.  The quality is there.  The Rossos, in my opinion, don't hold a candle to the Brunellos.

edit - I should point out that I am a real sucker for mouthfeel.  I love, love, love smooth silky sexy wines.  Brunello has it all goin' on in this department.

SAN FILIPPO LE LUCÉRE BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2004 - this is a wine Wrighty and myself went halves on for a case

Apparently a stunning wine (it was Wrighty's pick - he knows that region better than me)

I adore Brunello but have limited myself to just a few from 2004. Good vintage but personally I think Chianti out-performed Brunello, which doesn't happen often.

The Tenuta Nuova is the "big name" on the list after WS made the 2001 wine of the year a few years back. In my experience it's a lovely wine, but very international and not really what I think of as a Brunello. Of the others the San Filippo stands out if you can hold for 5 or 6 years, but my choice would be the Lisini - these guys make "proper" Brunello and in a good year it's a stunner, but needs some time in bottle (as Brunello should).

For what it's worth from 2004 I picked up Il Poggione (brilliant), Lisini, Banfi Poggio Alle Mura and Costanti. If you can find the Poggione anywhere this is hugely recommended.

Imo Brunello is possibly the single greatest all-purpose food wine on the face of the planet. Unfortunately over the past 10 years the number of producers has been increasing exponentially and quality is becoming more variable.

K

Posted on this, and then realized I tasted the 01 San Filippo, not the 04.  I found the regular 04 Piccolomoni a bit disappointing (not the VdP).

The only 2004 I've tried is Campogiovanni (San Felice) Brunello di Montalcino which is fairly up front with itself as usual. Had a 2001 recently and so far it's aging well and I've several bottles to watch it age. Of the 04's I bought, the San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucere is rating high on CT ratings. Then it's the E. Fuligni (Cottimelli) Brunello di Montalcino followed by the aforementioned Il Poggione.

Seems a pretty good list so if money allows, would suggest buying as much variety as possible as it will be a great way to explore a little patch of Tuscany.
