Ok, so difficult to get absolutes here, but just interested to get an idea on where the wines in people's cellars actually comes from. A "home wine" for an American would be US, and "away wine" probably European/South America/SA/Aus/NZ/etc.

For UK/European folk take Europe as "home"

So are you mainly carrying the local stuff, foreign muck, or a decent balance between the two? Not necessarily which you enjoy the most, just which you tend to hoard most of.

Funny - it's not what I expected, but it's almost an even split.  Purchases are also an even split.

sossher -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 10:48:26 AM)

I am definitely weighted in favor of local wines, but I would like to get more foreign wines in the cellar.

fingers -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 11:01:46 AM)

Cellar is 42% US

Consumption is 540/1103, or 49% US

It's nice to live where you can find almost anything from almost anywhere

Bryan Collins -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 11:05:09 AM)

I'm extraordinarily "home" - 95% of my bottles are from France, Italy or Germany. I should probably make more of an effort in the New World - there are undoubtedly plenty of wines I'd very much like to have in my cellar.

dsGris -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 11:26:50 AM)

I am pretty balanced with 400 US out of 700 with the away split between Italy, France, & Spain in descending order.

bretrooks -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 11:37:00 AM)

~58% home, which seems about right to me; I like supporting "local" winemakers with the bulk of my wine budget (although it seems funny to call the entire US "local"), and then branching out with a variety of "away" wines to keep some diversity in our collection.

At the moment, France is #2 with ~20%, and then I have lesser amounts from Germany, Italy, Spain, New Zealand, and Argentina...

Beachrooster -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 11:40:36 AM)

60% France
34% CA
Then some German and Spanish..

cookiefiend -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 11:53:16 AM)

60% Home
40% Away - but 75% of the 'aways' are French.

I should branch out more... [image]http://www.cellartracker.com/forum/image/s2.gif[/image]

IWineAlot -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 12:00:02 PM)

I calculated my "wines away" in my cellar and it came out to 83.02%, not shocked at all. France=49.06%, Spain=24.53%, USA=16.98%, Portugal=5.66%, Argentina=3.77%. These figure are excluding my daily drinkers which I do not track in CT because I would have to constantly remove them from inventory.

recotte -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 12:22:21 PM)

85% Home
15% Away, with 70% of "Away" being Italian

At one time, it would have been skewed in the other direction, with probably 85% being Italian, but then I met my wife, who isn't a particular fan. To be able to continue my obsession, I had to start buying more of what we would both enjoy.

We've only recently started scratching the surface on French wines, and I can see that being a "growth area" in my still modest collection.

ChrisinCowiche -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 12:32:42 PM)

90% USA, with 78% Washington. If you add the Canadian BC wine to my WA and OR, the PacNW is about 85%. Some of my US is CA, VA, TN, TX, NJ.

Definite homer and I mostly like it that way. I will say most of my few "away" wines have been recent and welcome additions and I will definitely be looking to expand my wine horizon's geographically while at the same time being very happy with what I can aquire at "home".

caeleric -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 12:36:59 PM)

66% north america (100% of that usa)
22% europe
6% australia
5% south america
1% other

wadcorp -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 1:19:35 PM)

US: 75.43%
France: 6.14%
Australia: 5.12%
Italy: 5.12%
Argentina: 3.07%
Spain: 1.71%
Chile: 1.02%
Other: 2.39%

PSUSteve -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 1:40:35 PM)

Started heavily away. Now up to 45% US and growing as I learn about CA, OR and WA wines.

rjsmall -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 1:58:29 PM)

Interesting. I have:
Europe 64.8%
Australia 12.4%
USA 11.5%
South Africa 9.1%
Argentina 1.8%
Lebanon 0.3%

I am an Aussie living in London (with an American wife) but Europe is definitely winning.

cweiss -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 2:19:27 PM)

I'm from US (east coast, so as close to Europe as to California) but less than 5% of cellar is North American and about 7% of consumption.

musedir -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 2:32:51 PM)

Away - 70% and Home 30%... but 2011 is the year to start acting more patriotic and trying the home team!

grafstrb -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 3:27:02 PM)

49% Home
51% Away

I guess I'm fine with that, but I think I'd prefer more "away."  I voted "good balance and happy," but would have chosen "mostly away and want more away," if that were an option.

pjaines -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 3:35:46 PM)

The foreigners start at Calais (to paraphrase)

Home mostly.

musedir -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 3:38:58 PM)

Pj - just how accessible are US wines in England?

pjaines -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 3:46:56 PM)

Not at all. Period

pjaines -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 3:49:01 PM)

US wines - semi-decent stuff = 50 GBP. For for 50 quid you can buy a really mature french bdx or rhone.

CDStrombom -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 6:54:46 PM)

Home 22% / Away 78%

USA 22%
South Africa 17%
Italy 13%
Australia 12%
France 8%
New Zealand 6%
Argentina 6%
Spain 5%
Portugal 4%
Chile 4%
Germany 2%
Other 1%

grayfont -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 7:19:45 PM)

Laughing...  Almost EXACTLY 50-50.
Home (USA) 134 bottles
Away 135 bottles.

This is after deducting the Bierzo I've just opened - quite tasty if a little rough around the edges.  Without question, now that Khamen has made me aware of this, my Super Bowl wine will come from the Away team to even the cellar count at 134 each!

Of the Away bottles, I've got 44% France, 33% Spain, 14% Italy, 5% Aussie/NZ, and 4% Argentina.

Feeling good about my regional mix, but not my varietal mix.  I have an absolute dearth of Pinot Noir (both Burg & New World) which is a major hole in the cellar when guests come over and ask for it.  It's not that I don't like it; it's just that I'm a bargain shopper - and so far I've found so little QPR in the Pinot Noir world!  (But I'm very open to recommendations...)

degrandcru -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 8:06:12 PM)

Chosen home is Mexico:

53% Spanish
17% Mexico (Baja California)
7% France
6% Argentina
6% Chile

and lots of others....

Problem down here in Mexico that you only find Spanish and South American wines for fair prices. If not I probably would have more French, Italian and German wines. But am very happy with my Spanish, Mexican and South American collection. On my buying list at the moment are mostly Mexican and Chile.

kidsmurf2000 -> RE: Home or Away? (2/4/2011 8:31:22 PM)

I'm a transplant! Born in the UK, moved to the USA, so I'm not sure how I should be voting, but...

90% French
8% USA
2% Other

I find USA wines ridiculously overpriced, even in the USA; I can get usually 2 quality Bordeaux for the price of 1 California Cab, and the Bordeaux is usually better suited to my tastes...

rjsmall -> RE: Home or Away? (2/5/2011 1:26:40 AM)

I think it depends where you buy US wines in the UK. You can pick up Ridge Zins or Au Bon Climat for about £25 from the Wine Soc but most people's contact with US wines is the £5 Blossom Hill or E&J Turning Leaf. I there is a lack of a mid market for US wines in the UK.

khmark7 -> RE: Home or Away? (2/5/2011 5:14:50 AM)

19% Home
81% Away

France alone is 73%, with about 23 countries representing "Away" and 12 states representing "Home".

GalvezGuy -> RE: Home or Away? (2/5/2011 6:21:03 AM)

Only the three west coast states represented. Shouild be getting more Virginia and New York wines. Very happy with my mix, especially the increasing percentage of Italians. Probably overloaded with Chianti and Super Tuscans but I do really like them and don't see myself getting away from them in the future.

39% US
38% France
12% Italy
6% Spain
2% Portugal
2% Chile
1% Austalian and Hungary
