vinole -> JJB Opening Florida warehouse/operation (10/1/2012 11:41:43 AM)

Some recent posts in the Smoking Deals thread mentioned some JJB deals and I realized I had not gotten any offers since purchasing my last order around 9/10. I also got an email saying some futures arrived and it had a new person shown as my account manager. Sent an email thinking my old guy had left, but it turns out that Buckley is opening up a Florida operation and they cannot accept or ship orders from FL clients until it is operational in "early October". It will be housed in Dade county and they will be charging 7% sales tax (Dade has an extra 1% county tax). The biggest concern I have is that it will not have the same offers and pricing as the home CA operation. I will also be getting a new account manager. On the plus side, the shipping will be faster and cheaper, and in fact I may be able to pick up orders as I have an office in Coral Gables that I go to twice a month. Also would not be affected if there is a change in FL shipping laws like TX adopted, though I can't help but feel this is a victory for Southern (based in Miami) which I am not fond of as they have made huge donations to FL politicians to get a restrictive shipping bill approved here.

cjsavino -> RE: JJB Opening Florida warehouse/operation (10/1/2012 11:44:29 AM)

I am sure they will have a climate controlled warehouse, but my concerns would be shipping anything out of the southeast most of the year with high temperatures.

vinole -> RE: JJB Opening Florida warehouse/operation (10/1/2012 11:50:25 AM)

I buy from a store near St Pete (B-21) and I get free shipping via UPS which is overnight from there (240 mi away). Don't do that in summer, but works fine late October through May. I'm guessing the same would apply to clients in Orlando and Tampa for JJB.

MindMuse -> RE: JJB Opening Florida warehouse/operation (10/1/2012 12:00:16 PM)

Very interesting. I hadn't heard about this.
If they store free for you for six months you could come out ahead by picking up, even after the sales tax.
Since shipping to Atlanta would be a lot closer than from the WC, I'll have to look into this as well.

Gobi -> RE: JJB Opening Florida warehouse/operation (10/2/2012 6:30:04 PM)

I have some bottles stored with them, they're asking me to create a Fedex account so they can ship them to me. Anyone know if theres any potential problems with doing this?

GalvezGuy -> RE: JJB Opening Florida warehouse/operation (10/2/2012 7:37:10 PM)

Gobi, been doing that for years. No problems at all.

Looks like JJB is giving TotalWine a run for its money. However: Last month I was in FL and the wine market seemed pretty soft. TotalWine also is pricing higher in expectation of customers bringing in coupons. Maybe JJB can topple them, as a true fine wine boutique--not a WalMart of wine.

I think stores like B-21, Wine Barn, and Wine Watch have more to fear from JJB than TotalWine. I buy limited stuff from TW (and bet most other posters here are likewise), mostly daily drinkers as their prices on Bordeaux are absurd and their Rhone selection is very poor. I think the people who buy high end wines at TW are mostly those who have some celebration and have X$ to spend or are looking for a famous label, not buyers who go online and have stuff shipped for cellar purchases. I see TW's customers as the typical bottle will be drank within a week As JJB's FL operation will have its own offers and pricing completely independent of the home CA operation, I am waiting to see if the offers as as good as CA in both selection and price.

Mike4321 -> RE: JJB Opening Florida warehouse/operation (10/3/2012 6:08:03 AM)

I believe their "store" will be on-line only. No walk in retail or pick up at this time... maybe in the future. FL residence will have to pay sales tax at purchase.

I found TW prices were actually fair a few years ago, but have gone up to uninteresting levels as the selection has deteriorated. You are right: Rhone, Burgundy selections are not very good. In high end, they have a few nice Cali Cabs, and young Bordeauxs, but not much else. Mostly interested in their craft beer selection nowadays, and perhaps, yes, daily drinkers, when I am in FL for those 2 months of the year. Have held a few things from TW as their Bordeaux is very young.

vinole -> RE: JJB Opening Florida warehouse/operation (10/12/2012 4:18:18 AM)

Have only gotten 3 offers in the past 10 days since they started. I hope the volume picks up as I typically got about an offer a day from the original JJB. Can't tell yet if pricing is any different.

AngryPrez -> RE: JJB Opening Florida warehouse/operation (10/12/2012 5:54:04 AM)

my company has a fedex account, but because we're pretty small potatoes as far as volume with fedex, it costs an arm-and-a-leg to ship using my account. jjb's buying power with fedex kept shipping very reasonable, but i stopped buying anything from them once i got my first fedex shipping bill and saw my price/bottle almost quadruple.

Speculation here, but maybe with your FedEx account the "title" changes at thier shop instead of your house when you sign for it. Might help them on cross state lines kind of stuff.

Gobi -> RE: JJB Opening Florida warehouse/operation (10/13/2012 4:04:00 PM)

So I spoke to them late laste week and they agreed to make an exception and ship me the bottles on their account. Great service and understanding on their side, one of the reasons I will still buy from them.

Im not really sure if FL has actually passed a law, the way I see it and as it was kinda of explained to me is that they're preparing for the eventuality of a law passing.

They also said that the upside to the move is that south FL is filled with distributors and what not and JJBuckley having the leverage to get better deals, they are also looking into importing the same labels and products as they have in the CA operation. Shipping for FL will be much lower obviously, I think my acct manager said something like 16 dolars per case via ground to Jacksonville.

As for Winecommune they might implement a similar operation for the FL side, however it won't be coming anytime soon.

dase13 -> RE: JJB Opening Florida warehouse/operation (11/4/2012 6:42:59 PM)

I had received the same email as AngryPrez.

I agree with others' posts.....shipping into and out of South Florida is precarious unless you use overnight shipping with morning delivery.

champagneinhand -> RE: JJB Opening Florida warehouse/operation (11/4/2012 8:53:26 PM)

The biggest reason I buy from Buckley is their seriously good shipping rates. A case from JJB is under $30 and 3 day air which usually arrives in 2. I just bought 6 bottles from K&L and the price was $29 for ground. The wineries usually come in at $45, which is where Full Pull is at with UPS. If the shipping rates stay at that range with FP and Paul stays with UPS, then I will reduce purchases to nothing. UPS ground takes 6+ work days to get fro Seattle to NY, where FedEx ground is here by Friday if sent on Monday. I would have a hard time justifying JJB if they came to my state and the taxes kicked in and the shipping went up. My local choices are pretty good on most things though they suck on WA wines and their Rhones are pricier unless you get them marked down.

Gobi -> RE: JJB Opening Florida warehouse/operation (11/8/2012 3:20:21 PM)

Daily mailers are more frequent now for the FL operation, but still not startled by anything. Haven't bought anything there, it seems a bit scaled back I think there's only like 300 wines to choose from? Most of it is still underwhelming for me, anyone think the same?

dase13 -> RE: JJB Opening Florida warehouse/operation (11/8/2012 6:52:53 PM)

Getting the local emails everyday. I haven't bit on anything yet either.

vinole -> RE: JJB Opening Florida warehouse/operation (10/23/2014 11:13:16 AM)

JJ Buckley is closing their Miami warehouse at the end of October. They will now service Florida directly from Oakland and should have full selection available. I have bought 6 bottles of one wine from them in the last two years due to the lack of selection and sale prices. I know there have been issues with them in the past year, but will be nice to have another retailer source as I have been using Benchmark recently for my older vintage and better wines.

mjobtx -> RE: JJB Opening Florida warehouse/operation (10/23/2014 11:34:03 AM)

At least something good is happening in FL. They have shut down in Texas and it was a new operation.

kidsmurf2000 -> RE: JJB Opening Florida warehouse/operation (10/23/2014 8:56:55 PM)

Apparently JJB was sold a while back, and has recently been bought back but the original owners.

My guess - and it is a guess - is that somebody bought them out with the intention of becoming a U.S. wine powerhouse, and didn't pull it off. These expansions, and now closures, seem to go along with that.

I was a huge fan of JJB back in the 00s, so I hope they're get back to their former glory.... Sounds like they are committed to doing so.

Old Doug -> RE: JJB Opening Florida warehouse/operation (10/23/2014 10:10:57 PM)

Well yeah - it was the quasi-governmental Quebec Alcohol Society, right? A "Crown Corporation" in Canada... "What a mess" is what I think, but then again I'm just an old curmudgeonly drunk.

dbg -> RE: JJB Opening Florida warehouse/operation (10/24/2014 2:17:04 AM)

A Canadian provincial government agency bought, and then sold, JJB? I must have been under a rock. It just seems so... wrong.
