Eric -> Email verification (12/3/2014 5:56:45 AM)

Today I just scratched an item off of my todo list that I have wanted to put in place for just about 10 years.
  • Now when you register on CellarTracker OR change your email address, you will be sent a verification email.
  • Until your email is verified, certain site functionality will be disabled.
  • There is a lot of prominent UI on the sites/apps to alert you to this.
  • I have also seeded the list of email addresses to verify with the addresses of anyone who has bounced in one of our newsletters.
  • If you try to reset the password with an email address that is bounced or unverified, we also let you know that prominently and tell you how to contact us to fix it up.

For all of the people who bounced historically, we have not generated validation emails for now. (That would trigger a lot of email, and most of them are bouncing...)

Just click the link in the banner, and the resulting page has a link to let you resend the verification email.

To close, I know this isn't sexy functionality, but maintaining an accurate email address is crucial to allowing us to provide you the best support.

OK, I have taken this a bit further. For the past week, now if you login to our classic or desktop sites as a user with a known bounced email, you are automatically redirected to the email validation page. And today I went one step further and triggered validation emails to anyone who has logged into the site for the past year, has a bounced email, and who has not already triggered a validation email.

As time goes on, we will likely continue to be more aggressive about reminding people to fix or validate their emails, especially if we receive (and track) a bounce.
