In response to Ibetian, I will start a new thread, hope more people will participate in this thread. When I attend a tasting, usually too many wines, so I try to focus on top 2 to 3 wines due to my limited consumption ability, so these top wines are the most interesting to me. Theme: Bring a top Burgundy 1er Cru that you like, at least 20 years of age. ‘89 Lafleur ‘89 Mouton ‘90 LLC ‘90 Lafite ‘95 Rousseau CdlR Single blind except for the Rousseau. Consensus #1 Lafite and #2 LLC, Lafleur came in last, best QPR was LLC.

We recently attended a "Stinkin' Merlot" themed tasting with the Seattle Tasting Group. Wines included were: A few Bordeaux from the correct bank/regions, a British Columbia Canada Merlot, an Italian Merlot, a couple of California Merlot, and a couple of Washington Merlot including 2016 Cultura Merlot Yakima Valley. My favorites were #1 the Italian, #2-10 something besides the Italian; in the overall group ranking the Italian was #1, almost by consensus, and the Cultura came in 5th. Fun event that Freelon (skifree) or someone else might provide the actual details.

I found Freelon's rankings/notes... Masseto. :) Nice guess Joe! 2012 Masseto – 37 points. Outstanding, a score I rarely give. Clear WOTN for me. Favorite of Bryan, Freelon, Henry, Ron, Chris, and Mark C. 2011 Vieux Chateau Certain – 45 points. Showed very well given the vintage, classic “donut hole” Pomerol with real power. I brought this, and picked it out of the line-up. Favorite of Mark Y, Mike, and Roger. 2016 Fleur Cardinale – 50 points. Lauren and Jason’s favorite, my 3rd. Classic St. Emilion from a great vintage. 2017 Black Rock (B.C.) – 71 points. Barb’s favorite, Jeff’s second, 9th for Chris and Bryan. 2016 Cultura – 87 points. Ed’s favorite, Henry’s second, 9th by Jason, Jeff, Mark Y, and Mike and Roger’s 10th. 2013 Pedestal – 89 points. Bryan’s tenth, wait, who brought this? 2012 Pape Clement – 92 points. Burg Night: Double Blind ‘17 Sylvain Pataille Le Chapitre ‘16 Henrt Boillot Clos de la Mouchere ‘01 Henri Boillot Bienvenues Batard Montrachet ‘17 Hudelot Noellat Clos Vougeot ‘02 Huber Lignier MSD VV 1er Cru ‘10 Bouchard Chapelle Chambertin ‘16 Oliveier Bernstein Charmes Chambertin ‘16 Faiveley Chambertin Clos de Beze ‘07 Bruno Clair Chambertin Clos de Beze #1 Hudelot Noellat Clos Vougeot #2 Faiveley Chambertin Clos de Beze #3 Hubert Lignier MSD VV 1er Cru Most had Hudelot as the clear winner but I had Faiveley Beze as Co-WOTN as I believe the Faiveley has tremendous potential yet to unfurl.

In this case there were 14 voters ranking 10 wines 1 through 10. We tasted blind and in a random order. And for the record, the theme of the tasting was not "stinkin merlot" but "Merlot from around the world". [:D] [:D] Elaine Chukan-Brown hosted the Taste of Washington event of the same name.

Beat ‘90 Latour Night. Single Blind. ‘90 Latour ‘89 Vega Sicilia Unico ‘85 Chave Hermitage ‘88 Mouton ‘90 Lynch Bages ‘06 Dujac CdlR 1912 Latour (Oxidized) - extra bottle. #1 ‘89 Unico #2 ‘90 Latour ‘88 Mouton came in last. Most had Unico as the outright winner but I had Unico and Latour as Co-WOTN.

NV Jacques Selosse Champagne Brut Rose ‘08 Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Milesime ‘04 Jamet Cote Brune ‘83 Palmer ‘89 Bartolo Macarello Barlolo ‘94 Vega Sicilia Unico ‘11 Gaja Sperss #1 ‘04 Jamet Cote Brune (best Jamet ever for me) #2 ‘83 Palmer (best Palmer ever for me) #3 Selosse Rose (best rose ever for me) Jamet got 5/6 votes as the top wine, the other vote went to Palmer. Very very good night, the top three wines were spectacular and I had Palmer and Selosse as equal. Not a regular Champagne drinker but may just buy some of that Selosse, it’s that good!

Been a month of so since our last wine dinner. Theme was originally Grower Champagne & White burgs, but after some discussion on RM vs NM vs CM - and realizing that most of the producers I thought were growers are actually technically negociants, we just said "no big houses". Generally, this was a difficult tasting for me. I generally like older, more mature wines. Thus as stereotypical me, my favorite of the night was the Ployez-jaquement, followed by the regular Mousse & fils and then the 2010 Bouchard Corton. Unfortunately, the 2012 Jouard Morgeot and the Pucelles were pre-moxed, but still drinkable. I probably liked them more than the others as they at least had some mature/oxidative notes. 2000 Ployez-Jacquemart Liesse d"harbonville (my #1) 2012 Mousse Rose de Saignee Special Club 2012 Mousse Special Club (100% meunier) ( my #2) ??? Different type of tasting. A friend is drawing down their cellar so offered to host a fantastic dinner and generously provided all the wine. The food was all fantastic, although special mention goes to the carrot/pesto/goat cheese on baguette, grilled lamb chops, and the blueberry ice cream made from blueberries from his back yard. Anyways, all the wines were great, but I'll post my personal favs. I loved the '75 Auslese as it was truly in full mature glory. The Wayfarer was a real revelation for California Chard, fruity like you expect from California, yet restrained - really nice. And of course the '89 Clinet was great. The Insignia, Harlan and Bryant were good and I am very appreciative to be able to try these very rare wines, just not my style. The '76 Hugel VT was great, but too dry in perception at this point for pairing with dessert. Around the pool 2004 Pommery Cuvee Louise NV (maybe 2010 base) Clouet 1911 Champagne (didnt get to taste this, gone before i arrived) 1975 Dr. H Thanisch Berncasteler Doctor Riesling Auslese (my #1) 2001 Joh. A nice event just outside DC. Typically not my favorite region for young reds, but I do love them with age, and these were... quite good. One of the Chave's were corked (the white); it seems like we've had really bad luck with Chave's over the years. Also it was wonderful to try my fist Salon. Not likely to try another given the price, but it was wonderful to try. My WOTN was the '83 Chave Hermitage, followed by the 1991 Jamet and the 1985 Jamet (each Jamet was better than the other at specific part of the night). Special mention should go to the '83 Lamothe as it was one of the better '83 Sauternes I've had and the best sauternes this year. I usually dont include the sauternes in my "best of" as its hard to compare, but it was close to outshining everything else on the table. Last week with some local winos at a Chinese restaurant. All wines were double blind. W-1 2022 Kinsman Eades Chenin Blanc Aberro - group favorite from the non-dessert wines. Very good but not $100 good. Thought it was a young Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc. W-2 2015 Domaine Bzikot Puligny Montrachet Folatieres 1 er Cru (magnum) - my preference. It had a nice weight to it, balanced, and paired deliciously with peking duck. W-3 2019 Goodfellow Chardonnay Dundee Hills - first time with the whites. I think it showed well and is a lot better value than the Kinsman. Could be a house chard if I were to pick one. My only bottle unfortunately. W-4 2005 Domaine des Baumard Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru - group favorite. I brought this thinking there were going to be a lot of spicy Szechuan dishes. There was 1. Reds (in order tasted, favorite highlighted). I was already getting a buzz at this point. R-1 2011 Aubert CIX Pinot Noir (magnum) - this had some bricking and tasted old. R-2 2019 Matzinger Davies Pinot Noir R-3 2014 Beaux Freres Beaux Frere Vineyard Pinot Noir - my favorite of the reds but take it with a grain of salt. R-4 2014 Grand Finale (or Go ****yourself) Turnbull Oakville Cabernet - group favorite. It was just too heavy and a purple mess for me.

I always prefer a tasting group of about 6-8 people, anything more than 8 bottles per sitting would be a challenge for the palate.

Last night with visiting friends from Canada: 2002 Piper-Heidsieck Rare 1996 Dunn HM 2000 Dunn HM 1991 Diamond Creek Volcanic Hill 2003 Lynch Bages 2010 Seaver GTS Cab Diamond Mountain 2012 Carter Hossfeld Colliseum ? La Combe des Fous Clos Saint Jean CdP My favorite and maybe group favorite was the 1991 Diamond Creek. All were PnP except for the Seaver.
