fredb -> Dupes: Ridge Santa Cruz Mountains (8/21/2006 11:52:40 AM)

There are a number of entries for this wine, which is the second (now third, with Home Ranch) wine of Monte Bello.  In the past, I believe that it was called Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon, but recent vintages (at least the 2000) were not sufficiently composed of Cabernet Sauvignon to qualify as a pure varietal wine.  These are just labeled "Ridge Santa Cruz Mountains California"  The bottom of the label indicates varietal composition, as is custom with Ridge.  In the database, a number of entries exist, including Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon and Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet-Merlot, at the very least.  As with Monte Bello, some normalization and an agreed-upon convention would be most welcome.

Cheers,
fred

I have merged the 2nd wine as simply "Ridge Santa Cruz Mountains."

The following explanation is for archival purposes:

Ridge is one of the great wineries of California and has been producing top quality Cabernet-based wines from its winery and vineyards in the heighths of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Montebello (named for the vineyard) is the most famous wine, but they have been producing a second wine from usually young vineyards for a long time as well. This wine has always been predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon and often carries that designation predominantly on the label. It always has other Bordeaux grapes in it, but usually in small enough quantities that the wines still can legally say Cabernet.

In Cellartracker, we have created a single lineage called Ridge Santa Cruz Mountains. This is to be used for this wine in every vintage, even if it does carry the Cabernet Sauvignon label. The varietal is to be set to Red Bordeaux Blend.

Thanks,

A.

How does this message relate to Stefania's Santa Cruz Mountain cabernet??

Not at all, as Stefania and Ridge are entirely separate wineries.

But apparently the reference 'santa' is sufficient to trigger the warning, as i am entering a Santa Duc CDR (though I also have some Ridge Santa Cruz in my cellar, so perhaps its the combo).

I think unfortuantely some dupes have snuck in again. There now are two entries http://www.cellartracker.com/new/wine.asp?iWine=874340 and http://www.cellartracker.com/new/wine.asp?iWine=945432 for what appear to me to be the same wine which the only difference being the "Vineyard" field.

Do these need to be re-merged?

Samadhi -> More Ridge ATP Dupes (4/14/2011 10:30:00 AM)

I just got my latest ATP shipment yesterday. It looks like there's another set of duplicates for the 2006 Lytton Estate Syrah:

In 2006, the Lytton Estate Syrah is from the Lytton West Vineyard.

The latter wine had zero data attached. Thus anyone could have deleted it from the wine editing screen in a matter of second (which I just did).

To make it even more confusing, as of the 2008 vintage the second release Cabernet Sauvignon from the Monte Bello vineyard is now called "Estate Cabernet". 2007 was the last vintage called "Santa Cruz Mountains". In some vintages when there are enough grapes to make a wine that is better than the Santa Cruz Mountains and not quite to the caliber of Monte Bello, there is a Home Ranch bottling (three separate bottlings in the same vintage). This is also the case with the Chardonnay of which there is also a Santa Cruz Mountains and a Monte Bello release from the same vineyard at the top of the mountain above Cupertino. As of the 2009 vintage the Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay is now called "Estate Chardonnay". And in some years when the Monte Bello Chardonnay isn't quite to the desired caliber to be labelled Monte Bello, it is released as Home Ranch Chardonnay and no Monte Bello Chardonnay is released, such as in the 2005 vintage.

I noticed when entering my wine cellar there are many Ridge duplicates like this Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet release and Stone Ranch Essence.
