So, our next monthly dinner group's theme is "Peanut Butter." Lucky me, I have "entree" This go-around.

What wines do you recommend? ... There will be appetizers, side dishes, entrees, and desserts all made with peanut butter.

If you can think of both a red and a white, that would be awesome!

Amontillado or Oloroso sherry?

If you eat peanut butter with any alcoholic beverage, be sure to use the "all natural" kind, which doesn't have partially hydrogenated soybean/cottonseed/canola oil in it. Those inferior oils tend to taste foul when combined with alcohol (i.e., tasting like varnish or linoleum). Not everyone will notice, but those with sensitive palates will. Soybean oil + alcohol = AWFUL.

In my experience, a hearty Syrah goes amazingly well with peanut or almond butter.

But seriously, who the heck picked the theme?

It was my own, non-drinking wife who picked the theme

My impression is peanut butter ends up in a lot of satay type dishes which tend to be a bit spicy so a nice crisp riesling could help balance.

I'd never have guessed a red, but syrah seems plausible since it can certainly be heavy enough to stand up.

When I saw the question, I thought of you Eric!
I remembered you had said you had this one evening and since then I've tried it too.

It is good!

Glad I made an impression!

Now, my recommendation is made based on a basic PB&J (or PB & honey, in my case) on toasted whole grain bread. I don't know how well it would stand up to other uses of peanut butter.

I think that mc2 wines is on to something with the Riesling recommendation to accompany a Thai dish.

From what to drink with what you eat they recommend beer, esp. lager, chardonnay oaked, gewurztraminer, gin and tonic and riesling... says also avoid red wine.

I would try a fairly dry riesling.

Riesling goes well with a lot of asian dishes, including those with a peanut sauce. (also an idea for an entree......)

Never tried a syrah with this type of dish, but I think that could work as well.
Would think a fruitier syrah would work better.

I've had syrah with both peanut butter and with almond butter - and black raspberry jam.
I think the black raspberry jam was what went so well with it, so yes - a fruitier one would be best, not a funky French Côte-Rôtie or something really minerally.

Word. Hot and Spicy peanut sauce is pretty much peanut butter, honey and chilies. Crisp Riesling rocks that easily.

So, I'm hearing a crisp, dry Riesling and a new world, fruit forward Syrah ... Must be seredipidity because you can't get much more "WA Wine" specific than that.

Thanks everyone!

Your wife may be a little more wine savvy than you give her credit...

She may just be testing you to make sure you can keep up.

I don't know about entrees, but I can tell you that a nice, big Cali or Washington red wine (Syrah, Zin, etc.) goes brilliantly with those white chocolate Reeses eggs that only sprout up in the spring. Something about the white chocolate, the super-sweet peanut filling and the wine just works, on every level. And this is from someone who, for the most part, kind of hates all commercial confections ... With this one exception. Oh and, we stock up and keep them in our freezer. A favorite post-putting-the-kiddo-to-bed treat for my husband and I is a glass of wine and sharing one of those "eggs." Lovely.

(Note: not that I'm against pairing Caymus and peanut butter fudge or homemade buckeyes during the holiday season, either. Because that also does NOT suck. At all. Yummmm.)

A chilled Beaujolais Nouveau - makes the perfect "PB n' J" combo.

Thanks Lindsay, and welcome to the forum! Honored to have my peanut butter subject be your first post. Looking forward to hearing more about your winery and to visit next time the wife and I are down "south."

There is one other Washington based beverage, and it is the one that REALLY goes well with peanut butter: Starbucks!

I think they just legalized another item that goes well with peanut butter snacks and candy. I don't think it comes in liquid form right now, but sure that's in the works.....

Hey... I'm suddenly getting an idea: how about Manishevitz Concord wine? Tastes a LOT like grape jelly...

With the pre-made crustless Pb&J from Smuckers. Sandwiches slightly frozen kosher wine slightly chilled. I think this would qualify as kosher, minus the Smucker's part.
