Following on from the US Secret Santa thread, I believe us fine upstanding gentlemen of England's green and pleasant land should do the same. It was a great success last year and I am sure will be a success this year. Why shouldn't it be? An excuse to give and receive booze is well within our "raison d'etre". We have a happy volunteer as the Elf (Chrisinsunnyside) who will organise the to/from aspects of the CT UK Secret Santa.

Of course this means we will need to meet up, swap wines and get drunk in December in London. Plus ca change, as they say in France.

So, first things first.....who is in?

Me = Yes

p.s For anyone who has seen Toy Story 3 I am worried by a user name of Chris In Sunnyside.....

I'm in, but, due to travel obligations, may not be able to make the drunken debauchery meetup.

Y'all better hope I can't make the drunken debauchery fest; I don't think anyone could keep up with me on the espresso martinis --- I could drink liters upon liters of those things!

Grafs certainly looked like he had a thirst for those littlle puppies. Remember Grafs that how is we start the slide down the slippery slope. Just ask cgimes and PBM. We would generously call it a "tactical retreat" on a couple of occasions.

If y'all did this the week before Christmas I would consider participating in person ... but I think Grafs will be back in the states, so that might not work.

I'm pretty sure I could down somewhere between eleven and twenty-eleven of those suckers no problemo.  I'm pretty sure they don't even put alcohol in 'em, which makes it even easier.

My (lack of) presence shouldn't stop you from visiting!  As it is, however, Ashley and I will be back to the States from Dec. 17 through Jan. 2.

Yo Dudes and Dudettes of the Fair Kingdom.....

You remember how smashed Toby was last year? Remember?
No?

Do you remember the actual drawing of names, sorting through car parks, etc... ? Remember?
No?

Well, do you at least remember there was a 2010? And there is a tradition known as Santa Claus, Jolly St. Nick, Kris Kringle, Father Christmas, Harry Hannakuh, Randy Ramadan, etc...?

Well, join your mates pjaines, kingkanu, Steph, and ex-pat grafstrb or you won't get your picture in the calendar...

Is it possible to ship a bottle from the US to the UK safely, and without customs problems? If so, and if it isn't prohibitively expensive to get a bottle from the UK to the US (don't want to burden anyone with huge shipping costs), then I'd be interested in participating. If it isn't feasible, I understand and not a problem. Like UK folks, and thought I'd offer.

ckinv368, last year we were able to ship some wine US to UK successfully, but a single bottle is cost prohibiitive, as shipping cost would exceed the value of the wine, and I think (but don't know for sure) UK to US would be same problem. That's why we decided to keep the US and UK groups separate again this time around.

Sarastro, I have no idea about inter-Europe shipping. If someone has some experience with that, I think it would be great to add the other CTer's across Europe to the pool. I know in addition to Italy we have Denmark, Finland, and Austria CTer's... at least. Somebody in each of those nations that wants to participate would have to understand the shipping routes though. The other possibility is to buy direct from a retailer in the reciever's home city/country. I'd be glad to include others in the swap under either scenario, but don't have any clue on feasability or likely costs. Chime in folks if you know if this is possible or not.??? Thanks

Shipping into the UK is not a problem - we dont have the communist/fascist* (*delete as appropriate) approach to shipping wine as the US. The cost of shipping from the continent is not too prohibitive, but from the US I think it does stack up.

I shipped a case of 1997 Cerbaia Brunello Reserva from Montalcino that cost a pretty penny but quite frankly the choices were so great I decided WTF! The desk clerk was more appalled than I was.

Maybe you ought to try shipping a more expensive wine ...

Inter European shipping is feasible and without any Custom problems. Shipping rates are of course higher compared to national shipping but for sure lower compared to USA>UK shipping - but they are related to the sender's home country, and the alternative of buying in the reciever country is an extra possibility.

As for me I would really like to join in, and I will gladly take care of the extra shipping costs just for the pleasure of being part of the group, but of course the final decision is yours and not mine.

INFO MOVED to Elf Thread...

Don't know yet if there will be a gathering and exchange, but we'll figure that out as the time nears for the gift exchange. PM me with any thoughts or ideas on that, or post them here.

Chris - Yoassarian and myself are one and the same. I toyed with using another logon for work reasons, but then figured that all my history is on google anyway, so it is a futile effort.

Hmm, ChrisinSunnyside just PMed me asking whether I would be interested. I replied that it's not entirely ok for private people to send alcoholic beverages to a recipient in Finland. However, this is against EU principles of free trade, and there is a lot of discussion about the legality of the Finnish laws in EU. But perhaps I could take a risk and join in. My Secret Santa would not be in any risk (other than losing a bottle of wine to the Finnish state) and nor would I be (other than losing a bottle of wine). I would suggest that in the case that I would be in, my Secret Santa would take the mailing expenses into account when thinking of the wine to send to me (ie if we have a max of £40 and it costs £15 to send the bottle, the bottle should be max £25). Any people object to me joining in, given the above? Feel free to say so, I won't be offended or anything, just throwing out an idea.

So, cost...

Given the quality of some of the wines that we got from LBC (gwad rest its soul...) I would punt at £30 sterling..

Chris - you should have my details but I'll PM them over - you might want to add another 'grouping' for those that will be partaking in The Colonels Christmas Party which tends to happen late December....(assuming that CL is coming back to the Mother Country for Christmas..)
