Usually, tasting notes on wine from the 2900's are about Riesling.

Another glass from the bottle of 2001 Arrows Monte Rosso. It's shot tonight - barely any fruit left, and what is still there is hidden behind the secondary notes. Still good, just not excellent. Not a bad showing considering this has been open a week.

I needed something to pair with watching my Eagles stomp the Cowgirls and update my CT cellar.

A twist on an Old Fashioned:
2 measures of Old Forrester 1920 bourbon, bourbon barrel smoked brown sugar, some bitters (carmelized orange and barrel aged cherry), 2 crushed blackberries and 2 muddled "cutie" wedges.... and then 1 giant ice cube.
Yum!

Also drank this last night- wow it was good. Drank along side a US Wagyu Hanger steak and smashed red potatoes.
2006 d'Arenberg Cabernet Sauvignon The Coppermine Road -dark fruits and hints of cherry on the finish, cedar, cigar box and some currants. Wow, was amazing with food and very good by itself. Highly recommend and sad that this was my last bottle.
I paid $30 via KL Wine and I feel I owe them more money!

What do you think of it? One of the clerks at TW suggested La Vieille Cure to me recently but I've avoided it so far.

Mead.
A friend brought over a bottle of The Fat Friar's Mead, made in Newcastle, ME.
Interesting, but not something I would make a habit of drinking.

The first glass of 2003 Chateau Suduiraut went down smoother than expected. I don't see that much of a difference between the '03 and '01, or at least the reason why the professionals differ by so many points on the two vintages. The funny thing is James Suckling scored both a 93, Stephen Tanzer has a 3 point difference (92 for '03 versus 95 for '01), while Wine Spectator has a 5 point spread between those years (93 for '03 versus 98 for '01). Guess I'll have to try them side by side. Might have to enlist some help over some lobster.

I told my neighbor, Brian (KCBrian) that I had a Laphroig 10 Year. He said, "Worst scotch I every had. Tasted like something Boy Scouts pissed on in a campfire."

I repeated that to another friend who is a native of Scotland. His response was, "He's a girl."

2014 Forlorn Hope Gemischter Satz (White wine; field blend of 40 white and red Austrian and German varietals, from Lodi).

Lots going on. Low alcohol. Nice counterargument to my "just drink old world wines" idea.

Oh Yeah....Last night was just the wife and I so we popped a 2005 Dunn Howell Mountain. It was decanted for 3 1/2 hours and was so sublime and perfect. Aged Dunn is just magical. I would think you Burgundy guys would love this Cab for its subtlety and understated qualities? Such a finesse wine which never beats you over the head. I love drinking Dunn over a long period of time and just enjoying its greatness. This is one of my all time favorites and I need to fill some gaps, like 2010 & 2012. If you have 2006 it's also amazing.

Most of us would probably think an '05 or '06 Dunn was way too young, but it's all relative. If you're used to drinking Cab under 5 or 6 years old, a 10 - 12 year old Dunn is well-aged in comparison. Regardless of cellar time, Dunn makes a great wine. Drank an '03 a little over 2 years ago and wish I had held it a while longer. The good thing is that you can find their stuff with 15+ years of age fairly often on the auction sites, and since it's a hardy Cab it isn't as affected by other-than-ideal storage as some other less tannic wines.

We drank a lot of stuff today but the star by far was a 2008 Larkmead Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Solari. Just stunning.

The 2011 AF Nichols Principio PN was much lighter bodied than expected. So much so, without the fruit that's usually found in domestic PN, that I wondered if it's already past peak. If I could find all the same qualities of relatively low acid and tannin, but with nice red fruit (like in a Rivers Marie Summa), I'd buy it by the case. Makes me curious to try more recent vintages of the Prinicipio.

For me the turkey day wines worked really well. We had both turkey and prime rib, but I never got to the later. The
2013 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Chassagne-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes was a fabulous paring with the Turkey and a white morel sauce.
The 2010 Kosta Brown RRV was drinking well. (Well one of the two bottles the second was corked)

Today's dinner plan is prime rib left overs with the '01 Insignia which did not get opened last night.

Thanks.
Only the '12 is available at my local TW right now, at $27 Mix6 price.
CT notes give it good praise, including from Jeff Leve. I haven't been a big fan of other Fronsacs I've tried though.
Even if I put it on my list now it could be late winter/spring before I get around to buying any.
In the meantime I'm on a mission to buy at least one each of a number of ($60-$120 range) highly CT rated classified growth bottles in the store,
which means the balance of my mix6 basket will be under $20 bottles.
