2011 Louis Boillot Beaune 1er Cru Les Cent Vignes. CT reviews panned this wine; I was pleasantly surprised. I agree its not that complex for a 1er cru, but it was not priced like a 1er cru (at least on WTSO).

2013 Rocca di Frassinello Maremma Toscana Le Sughere

Really harsh and tight last night. After leaving most of a glass out a day and topping it off from the bottle that was in the fridge, I think I can safely say I'm going back for a few more for the cellar. A Super Tuscan for under $20 is a deal. Wasn't there a thread asking about that exact price point?

2013 Quivet Cellars Syrah Hulda Block Las Madres Vineyard. First of all I would like to thank Yogi8938 my secret santa for this bottle! popped this bottle tonight and gave it around 3 hrs in the decanter, if you are a meat and olive lover this wine is for you! (and I am) The fruit is pure and great balance of acid and tannin, still has a long life to go but it was delicious now. As I have said in other threads I don't drink many California syrahs but man this was fantastic. I love this bottle.

For the Solstice, I figured I'd take my first crack in to the 2010 barolos with-- 2010 Rivetto Barolo Del Comune Di Serralunga D'Alba. Drinking well on this long night.

Sweet memories, OD

My last note, from 2012:

Sadly, my last of 6 and of course, it was the best! After a nice string of wines this week, this follows up an '03 Beaucastel and really only trailed it by an eyelash. Very comparable bouquet, just not quite the weight of the CdP. Rounder and fuller than prior bottles with even more elements singing in even better harmony. Enticing right from the pop. The alcohol feels like 13.5, not 14.2 (how refreshing!) and as I suspected in 2010, this had room to mature and has done so nicely. May need another 6-pak from Dave

Unfortunately, I did not follow my own advise in that last sentence. Good on’ ya for holding back a specimen.

2010 Château La Croix Figeac

CT review:

This wine was a delight. It presented a delicate floral aroma, which continued into the entry on the palate. The mid-palate constituted mixed black fruits, chiefly black cherry and black plum, followed by nuances of leather, anise, and iron. On the back of the palate, generous fine tannins herded more anise into the throat. The body was full, and the balance of all the elements was impeccable. Nothing was disproportionate. This wine has entered its drinking window, and drinks well above the modest $26 I paid for it; I wish I had bought many more bottles.

This serves as a reminder that there is still serious value to be found in Bordeaux for the diligent searcher.

Made a cuvée of the leftover 2003 Paul Hobbs To-Kalon and 2013 Rocca di Frassinello Maremma Toscana Le Sughere from the open bottles in the fridge. Not too shabby!

There's also a sample portion of 2016 M. Chapoutier Côtes du Roussillon Villages Les Vignes de Bila-Haut in front of me strictly for testing purposes.

Last night I polished off a bottle of 2010 La Dame de Montrose with minimal help from Mary.
One of my top 5 wines this year.

We really enjoyed a 1995 Z-H Clos Jebsal SGN over 2 nights. Night one was with BtR and I took the remainder home and shared with friends just trying to figure so much out on fine wine. Truly amazing.

Night two the friends provided a split of manzanilla sherry from the WS#100 that was very nice. Amazing almond and marischino cherry nose but completely different palate.

I loved that sticky so much I opened a 2009 Z-H Clos Jebsal SGN Trie Speciale, which needs those years, although not as much sweeter as I thought considering other vintages, but I will keep sipping throughout the week, using a vacu-Vin.

Both nights we had fun champagne. 95 Heiseick BdB. Good, young while showing the oxidation of its age, and 2004 Gold Label Veuve Clicquot that was very lovely, balanced and very enjoyable.

I love actually using the non-mobile version of CT to read all the notes from common bottles that get TNs this time of year.

Happy Christmas and holidays to all out there.

Let's see if you can guess which bottle we brought and which bottle the neighbors brought to my sister's house?

Not sure if I should post this in the "I Just Drank....." thread though. I didn't actually drink that melted raspberry chocolate shake mixed with vodka that Apothic tries to pass off as wine. One taste, by the sink, as nobody was looking because I had a feeling I would have to spit it out. My hunch was correct.

Last night was a Burgundy vs California Russian River Smack Off. Contestants were:

2005 Drouhin Laroze Chambolle Musigny vs 2014 Merry Edwards Coopersmith Pinot Noir. These were served blind, side by side with sea scallops and porcini mushroom risotto. My daughter and I preferred the CM and my son & wife preferred the Merry Edwards.

Everybody picked which was which which is pretty easy to do with these contrasting styles. The Merry Edwards sweetness is really noticeable after tasting the CM. A fun tasting.

2010 CT Barrel Project blend. Man that was a nice bottle of wine today. It has found balance to be sure. Some fruit and a bit of depth to it and I will be drinking more of these soon.

After a very cold my bike ride, I shared a big bottle of five year old Chimay Blue with my sweet little wife. It was very good, but not sure if aging it really added to the experience.
