Last night's Cabernet tasting at RedRedMoreRed's home. He'll have to provide results, I don't remember WOTN.

Each person ranked them 1 through 6, and then tallied, so lowest total is #1 etc. Rankings were:

1. 2013 Caymus SS (WOTN by a wide margin)
2. 2012 Altvs
3. 2009 Force Majeure
4. 2009 Coach Insignia & 2013 Schrader (tie)
6. 2016 Porta
7. 2010 Jack Nicklaus

Last night opened a 2008 Rasa Vineyards Syrah Principia Reserve to serve with grilled Flannery 60-day dry aged New York strips.

The wine was smooth and round, and I'm pretty sure the steak was the best I've ever eaten.

Ended up opening a 2011 No Girls Grenache to go with the spicy wings - remarkably good pairing. The sweet strawberry, salinity, and Cayuse funk were a good counterpoint to the heat and fat of the wings.

Now that is a pairing I never would have thought of on my own. Will be sure to have some wings available the next time I pull one of my Rocks bottles to see how it works.

As to pulled corks I opened a Rhys Bearwallow '11 last weekend, very good but not the "it girl" I am constantly searching for from Pinot.

At those prices, it would be more like a bottle every week or two and nothing else!

Aridus Tank 28 Red Blend, 2014, Arizona. Opened a few days ago. Pleasant, Mendoza-like of daily-to-weekend drinker status. Screwcap. So far so good.

At least 2 more days to enjoy, I think.

Cheers!

That's a word not often heard to describe wine. It immediately gave me a flashback to the days of Calvin & Hobbes:

Went to a fun little tasting yesterday where we had the following:

2014 and 2015 Chateau D'Issan
2011 and 2015 Chateau Lilian Ladouys
2015 Chateau Pedesclaux
2014 Chateau Fleur de Pedesclaux
2014 Blason D'Issan
2010 Chateau Lilian Ladouys La Devise de Lilian

All showed pretty well, although I think the "official" scores for all were pretty high for how these were tasting (who knew James Suckling has turned into a score inflator?)

Either way, it was a nice way to start the "pre-weekend"

It all looks French to me! (I can hardly read Texan.)

2016 Chapoutier Crozes-Hermitage Les Meysonniers, absolute steal at £160 IB per case based on WS. Delicious young Syrah, lightly extracted with little hints of alcohol or oaks. If you like Gonon St Joseph, you will like this wine.

2015 Domaine Combier Crozes-Hermitage - i need to find more of this. such a delicious old world young syrah!

on a sunday afternoon - both delicious pinots done in rather different styles. The dog & wolf pinot is their flagship and it does not disappoint. Half of the grapes are done in the classic house style while the other half are whole clusters, no destemming, extended skin contact. amazing; thankfully i have more than one.

I had a delicious 2016 Chapoutier Crozes Hermitage Les Meysonniers on a SQ flight back from Sydney recently. Looks like Crozes Hermitages are churning out world class Syrah at the moment, very good value too, one can buy a case for £160, what a steal!

I have been doing some “research” on Crozes Hermitage since then, these are the recommendations:

Graillot
Rousset Les Picaudieres
Murinais Les Amandiers & Caprice de Valentin
Domaine les Bruyeres esp. La Croix
Domaine Belle
Domaine Combier Clos des Grives
Darnaud Les Trois Chenes

Thanks! i've have a fair bit of crozes here and there but depending on the vintage or producers it can be a bit hit and miss; especially since the appellation covers more land the other northern rhone ones so quality varies.

the chapoutier Les Meysonniers is very reliable and a very fair price :)
as you've rightly mentioned also the Domaine Combier Clos des Grives is stunning especially since their house crozes that i had was already so delicious!

1996 Rene Engel Echezeaux, best showing from a case bought during EP. Lightly perfumed, still plenty of tannins, lively acidity of the vintage. Dense and long. Quite good today with years of development in the future.

Such a sad and untimely death.
Things are a little raw here so it's a Ilegal Mezcal Reposado.

The 10 corona & panek were side by side. Both way way young imo. The corona was powerful with dark fruit in abundance with a great mid palate & finish. The panek was more of the dark fruit, but also added a nice spicy cigar box note with a powerful nose. The panek won this round, but both need another 5-7 years min. Both 94 with room to go up.

The 10 myriad BDC once again was way young & needs 5-7 imo. Great nose, dark & dense. Easy 93 with room to improve.

12 myriad BDC takes the 10 to a higher level. Easy 12 exuberance with a beautiful nose, great balance and fruit. Young of course, but in a nice place, but I'd still give it a few more years.

09 myriad SM nice but compared to the others it was a bit outclassed. I love mtn fruit so I still enjoyed it.

14 WM wow this wine is rocking right now. In fact it was kicking the maybachs ass at first. Just a beautifully made wine that I would drink now. I like my wines with a good bit of age but this on grabbed me.

I'm not a note taker or writer, so I hope this helps.
