Reviving what has now become a Hallowed Annual Tradition (okay, we've done it two times, now, so that counts, right?), I bring you (slightly later than the prior two years because, quite frankly I forgot about it)...

Last Puppy Night

Per the description from Khamen in the original event, the following are the rules:

quote:

Simple rule - on Friday 3rd of May, you have to pop a bottle that you only have ONE of in the cellar - whether it's a singleton purchase or a bin end. Whether it's a special bottle or the last of a daily drinker pile is down to you.

Post on this thread what it was and how it was.

Together we can drink our way to a tidier cellar!

Who is in?

K

I believe we've been fairly liberal in allowing the consumption of the Last Puppy to occur anytime during the weekend.

Who's with me?

Dr. M and I will be in the NC mountains for the first time this summer with our great friends and I might just try to find a couple of last puppies to help out the cause. Plus a few others too...

I like this! I'll be at a CT offline that evening (indeed the whole weekend) but the bottle I've declared is in fact a last puppy.

My wine kennel, er, I mean, cellar, has lots of last puppies in it! I will also be at the Texas offline bringing more than one last puppy.

Does that make me a puppy killer?!

I've got loads of singletons, but some are there for a reason. I will be in, but have no idea what I'll be drinking.

Most of our cellar is one-offs.

Trying to be better about buying 2-3 of each bottle, but we've even drunk our way down to one of quite a few wines.

It's like a damned orphanage down there!

Exactly my issue. I dropped under 100 single bottles last night, due to a focused effort to drink down some of the stragglers. My big problem - if you can call it a problem - is the amount of single bottle Bordeaux and Cali Cabs from the '80's downstairs. I'll sort on vintage year, and see something like 1986 - 10 wines, 10 bottles. I'm not in a rush on them, wish I had gone for a little less breadth and a little more depth, but glad they are there for special occasions.

It's a puppy mill down there - about 200, so many breeds.... Alas, I am visiting family in Virginia so they will continue to make a mess in the cellar

What a great idea. There are so many lonely last puppies in my cellar that I don't know where to start.

The more I look at my inventory, I'm thinking that this should be a monthly event. And maybe a Last Puppy tasting evening to celebrate Spring.

About 260 singletons in my cellar at present.  Need to slice and dice it a bit more because lots seems to be "I want to try this" or other one off purchases/club inclusions.   To me, the Last Puppy is a wine where you've drank through 6+ bottles and are down to last bottle.   I have likely got a couple of these but it will take me a while a) identify them via CT, then b) find them in my "cellar".  My bottle labelling project is aobut 30% complete and the other 70% of my cellar is somewhat random.

In other words, I'm in.

I had no idea that I had this many but I've got 205 orphans.

Some are really good and some are there because I can't bear to pour them down a drain! I might kill the beneficial microbes in my septic system!!

But I'm in!

Something like 2/3 or 3/4 of our bottles are singletons, so most of our wine-drinking nights are "last puppy nights." I think I'll adopt CiS's approach and look for something which is the last bottle of a multi-bottle purchase.

You're right - many of my singletons are also one offs. Do have some real last puppies though, so will have to pick one of those.

Amazing! I figured the bulk of our cellar was singletons. Turns out not quite the case.

We currently have 299 wines. 178 are singletons. Which means 121 are not.

We've been working on getting 2 or more bottles at a time when purchasing.

Wow! I have a lot of lonely bottles. Out of 664 bottles, representing 434 wines, 320+ are last puppies. I need to work harder on those!

Took a closer look and of the 1,132 bottles in the cellar, 131 are singles. I estimate about 3/4 of these are one-off and the rest "last bottles".

The more I think about this, the more I want to focus on consuming these singles and clean up my inventory.
