For the past few months, I've been quite busy building out the new CellarTracker mobile website, on a completely new technology stack compared to what we have done in the past. Today, Eric and I are extremely excited to announce the launch of a preview, alpha version of the mobile site, which is now accessible to all donating users at http://www.cellartracker.com/m. NOTE: You will need to be logged in before the mobile site URL will work. If you are not logged in, you'll just get redirected to the main site instead.

We wanted to give a little something extra to those who have supported CellarTracker's growth through the years, and so we've made the decision to open up the alpha site to all users who have donated within the past year. We appreciate the support, and look forward to hearing your feedback on the new site! (Yes, we will be slowly opening up the new site to a wider audience as we implement more functionality.)

The initial preview includes the following main features:

  • Wine search (global)
  • My Cellar/Pending/Purchased/Consumed
  • Searching of My Cellar/Pending/Purchased/Consumed
  • Wine details, including tasting notes, inventory, pro reviews, label images, etc.


We're still evolving the design, and adding new features at a rapid pace--so expect to find new things coming online all the time (and also expect to find things moving around/changing as we refine various pieces). But we feel it is now complete enough to be useful to you, and we'd also like to enlist your help in testing it out.

Please keep in mind this is an alpha site, and there will be rough edges--and lots of "Not Yet Implemented". I've done my best to ensure those links are all greyed out, so you can't activate them, but you'll still get an idea of what we want to implement. Please post any feedback/bugs/etc you have in the CellarTracker Support forum.

I am used to check CT on my cell-phone when on the road, but this mobile version of the website seems easier to navigate and more visually pleasing.

Status: offline 		I've been very happy using the main CT site bookmarked on my iPhone, but the new mobile site is much faster and therefore quickly became my preferred lookup method. Given how well the full site works, IMHO it will be important not to compromise the speed of the mobile site.

Appreciate the feedback, Charles! The underlying technology of the mobile site is completely different from the main site, and allows us to do things in a much more parallelized/asynchronous manner -- meaning, we hope to be able to replicate much of the main site functionality with significantly improved performance compared to the main site. Regardless of technology, though, we understand the importance of performance and will be doing our best to make sure it delivers the experience you expect.

Are you planing on native Apps for iOS/Android? I could imagine nice functions like a barcode scanner that will look up the wine...

First we will flesh out the mobile site. Then we will look at wrapping it in native apps, at barcode support, at image recognition etc.

Status: offline 		We pushed out a few updates yesterday which add support for the full price/value hierarchy and private notes on the wine detail page. Also, the Food Pairings and Likes have been promoted from under the "More stuff" section to their own.

More subtly, I've made a number of visual tweaks to improve the overall layout and readability of key information on search result pages.

Coming soon: full tasting note search!

With the new mobile site, it was very easy to see what I had pending and verify the pick-up. As I mentioned to Eric on Twitter the other day, the best part is the speed. Thanks!

Status: offline 		As of a few minutes ago, Tasting Note search is now available on the mobile site! The "My Notes" tab on the homepage is (mostly) filled in, and you can also select either "Tasting Notes" or "My Tasting Notes" from the search dropdown to search within those specific areas.

Give it a spin, and let us know (in the support forum) if you run into any issues.
