Good morning to all from SoCal wildfire country. We are safe and so is our home. Very close monitoring of the Lilac Fire here, though. Our city has an evacuation shelter which is at capacity now. Total of 23,000 evacuees in our area with various shelters and a few scattered care sites for horses, other animals as well. We went on full alert Thursday and remain so today. My Dear Husband is the resident expert and sees no need for us to do anything except avoid driving much north of where we live. Too many evacuation zones and road closures to the north. Local school districts closed proactively; there is smoke/ash in the area.

So far, so blessed. All have a good day.

I was so bummed last night about the horses in Fallbrook that died in the fire. Heartbreaking. I'm such an animal lover that is just pained me. Especially the story about the one horse that would not come out of it's stall. The keeper was trying everything he could to get the horse to leave and it was so scared that it just stayed and lost it's life. Must have been heart wrenching fo the owner when he heard the story. Horses are amazing creatures and have strong bonds with their people.

There were lots of people with horse trailers who were going to the facility to help them get all of these horses out. There was 480 horses in this one place. This is so great when people rise up and try to help others. Evacuating 480 horses on the spur of a moment is a daunting task. They managed to save most of them which is great. I saw lots of volunteers at Del Mar Race Track this morning who were there to volunteer and help with the evacuated horses. Great story. Now the fire just needs to go away.

Rick

We have finally returned from Charleston. We spent a delightful evening with S1 and HRH at FIG, and it was good to meet them after all this chatting in cyberspace. CTers are such good people.

I, and I know quite a few fellow CTers, echo that assessment Eddie. This is a great community.

Rick, agreed about the horses. Very sad. Thus far, the Lilac fire is still listed as 0% contained. We now have a sea breeze which is generally positive news. And DH noted that some roads previously closed are now open. Still very watchful, but threat seems to be lessening. Strong winds thru Sunday 12/10, though. Sunday in particular will bear close watching.

All take care.

Eddie is no longer welcome in Charleston.
I provided him a week of sunny days in the 70s; he left us with rain and the low 40s
Thanks man

LMAO! So today the report is that our soon to be neighborhood in South Asheville has 8” of snow! The follow-up of the home inspection scheduled for tomorrow is NOT gonna happen until mid-week. The good news is the garage door opener failed and was replaced yesterday. Win! All my paperwork and financing are complete and now we’re just waiting for appraisal, inspection review, and something else I’m sure!

Meanwhile its wet and cold in Loachapoka but no snow. And good red wine warns the cockles of any curmudgeon’s heart!

Best news of all... A Christmas Carol (1951) is on TCM at 7pm (CST). It is, frankly, the best version ever made, even better than Reginald Owen’s 1938 version. And that’s no humbug!

We drove through that getting home this morning.

I have always preferred the Mr. Magoo version (in fact, to the exclusion of all others).

5:25 in Loachapoka and the latest news is that it snowed over night. Yup...snowed! This white stuff is seldom seen down here. And while I realize that there is 8+ inches on the ground in my soon to purchase house in Asheville, I did not expect to see any here. Can’t wait until my doxies awake as I am unsure if Isolde has ever seen snow (Siegfried has and he doesn’t like it... low bellies to the ground and such).

So a bit of chopped liver making, then a spot of shopping to get ingredients for a proper potato and leek soup, a couple of Xmas items to get in the mail and then back home to get in our warm jammies and watch a good movie. Oh...and open up my Secret Santa’s gift (the game is soon afoot).

Snow in Alabama? I didn't know that was possible.

Having a cup of coffee and will read the local paper on-line, then I will get on the elliptical for an hour to punish myself for my insomnia.

Jeff - Ive lived in the Deep South for more than 23 years now and can still count the number of snowfalls on both hands. Pretty rare stuff.

Light snow in Chicago and continued cold temps, although much better than yesterday morning. Beginning to feel a little like winter.

Coffee in hand (Tanzania).

Fine. Surgery was yesterday. She was more concerned about the pot roast she left in the refrigerator, and they haven't let her drink coffee for 48 hours so she might be a bit grumpy, even with the pain meds.

I suppose we could vacation in Delray Beach in the future, rather than Charleston.

It's 18 degrees F at our home in Kentucky this morning, according to our outdoor thermometer.

We have a bit of snow here, but enough to matter. The roads are clear and I have power. I will go for a run around 11:00 though I had hoped to ride today, but too cold and wet for that.

6:30am in the OC. Strong winds and already 72f headed up to close to 90. Not much of a break for the firefighters.

I will be battling the elements at an outdoor press conference that is expected to draw 5000 people for the Angels to announce the signing of their Japanese phenom. Why they think it’s a good idea to do this outdoors on a day like today...... well, all I can say is I’m charging extra. And if there are any technical problems, guess who everyone will be looking for? Yep, me.

When I headed off to bed last night around midnight it was 72° F. Woke up an hour ago to 50° F. I blame Tom for not stopping the cold front at the AL state line.

Something important on today's agenda in just a couple of minutes, but I can't remember what...

Yup... I opened the border gate at Loachapoka and told the nasty weather to not stop until it reached Tampa. I've been working on my best Jim Cantore for a while now.

Hey it is like totally winter like in Tampa. (Expect for the precip)

Temp 58.5°F
Dew Point 55.6°F
Humidity 90%
Daily Precip Total 0.20 in

-Mark
p.s. there is a rumor on the local news we might have 5 days in a row below 70F. Last time that happened was in January.

Karl, glad to hear things fine with your Mother. I'd call being grumpy without coffee "normal".

Greetings from wildfire country. Our situation is much improved. Number of evacuees down substantially. Roads re-opening. Shelters winding down and/or closing. The shelter in our city closed this morning and will re-open for normal community activities today. No signs of smoke nor ash in the air. Late tonight and thru tomorrow afternoon increased wind gusts will call for continued vigilance. But so far so good.

Hope that all have a good day. Stay safe out there.

Good to hear PP. I saw a video of a fire just above the 405 and it looked really scary.
