I had the 2006 Bodegas Olivares Jumilla Panarroz (Spain, Murica, Jumilla) a short while back that was very impressive for $10...I scored it 89, shelf talker said RMP gave it a 90

I also recently drank a few 2005 Calina Carmenere Reserva (Chile, Central Valley, Maule Valley) that showed well for the price of $4

A pretty solid Malbec is the 2007 Altos Las Hormigas   for ~$10.

Squeezing under US$15 in HK is a very tight call!

However, I have some.
2005 Castello del Poggio Barbera d'Asti = $13.80
2007 Glen Carlou Chardonnay = $12
2007 Sileni Sauvignon Blanc Cellar Selection = $13.60
2005 Zenato Lugana San Benedetto = $13.50
2006 Fontanafredda Piemonte Barbera Briccotondo = $14.80

I don't drink much Argentinean Malbec but I was impressed with this. It needs an hour to unwind.

I totally agree with you regarding the 2005 Bodegas Castano Yecla Solanera Vinas Viejas

I recently purchased a case, along with a couple of other great spanish values.

I agree that the Argentine Malbecs give you some reasonable character in the low end. They can be a little rustic or even a little harsh.

I just had a Trapiche "Oak Cask" malbec (probably 2006) that had a good dose of modern style vanilla-sweetness. That took the edge off, resulting in a relatively intense, fruity wine without any harshness. Very easy to drink, but still had character.

2004 Peirano Estate Petite Sirah Heritage Collection, Lodi

At just $12.99 this one comes across more like a wine in the upper twenties, as per price.

Deep colour, full mouth, really nice. And it got better the longer it was open.

I'd never heard of this winery before.

I drank a 2006 Domaine la Fourmente Cotes du Rhone Villages Visan, Le Grand Gibard (France, Rhone, Southern Rhone, Cotes du Rhone Villages Visan) that was quite nice...just made the cut @ $13.99 (from Garagiste)

I just tried 2007 Bodegas Nekeas Vega Sindoa Tempranillo-Merlot and thought it was rather interesting, sour cherry on the nose and into the finish with graphite underlying.  At $9 it was a bargain.

I find many aspects of wine fascinating, and one of the most so is the fact that for +/- $10 you can get a bottle of absolute swill with some fancy marketing, or you can have a very nice, well crafted bottle of wine.  There are very few consumer products where the range of quality swings this wildly at a given price point.  I think this is really interesting.

I am not sure that you can find this wine for under $15 widely anymore but when I bought it, before WS published their thoughts and called it a Smart Buy, I paid just under $15.  The wine is the 2005 Peter Lehmann Shiraz

Here are my two notes.  I scored it most recently a 92 but never under 90.

Some might think I am committing a bit of infanticide opening another bottle of this now but it is so approachable it is difficult to resist. It is also not the most expensive Shiraz in the world so it isn't such a big deal. I have enough bottles as to make opening now feasible. I really like this wine. A medium, edging toward dark, purple in color with a touch of amber on the edges it has a nice full nose of cherries, plum, earth and spice. On the palate it was full of cherry and earth with plum, chocolate, tobacco and black pepper. It came together nicely and was well balanced. Not overly complex but complex enough. A nicely intense, though not overdone, flavor intensity throughout. A smooth tannic structure is what make it so drinkable now but it should age well for 5 or so more years. I'm not sure mine will last that long. Great quality for the price. Excellent value and an excellent wine. (1013 views)

Had this wine over dinner at Aqua in Hilton Head, South Carolina. I didn't really write down my notes and thoughts on this but I wanted to quickly comment that it was incredible for the price point. So much so that I got back to our villa, went online and ordered a case. I will come back in and provide more detailed tasting notes when I open up the next bottle. I remember my mouth filled with cherries and spice along with some hints of blackberries. It was well balanced now but I am certain it is going to get better with another 4 years or so. More notes to come with the next bottle. (994 views)

I'll second this recommendation.  I had the 2005 and really enjoyed it, but it sounds like the 07 is even better.  Time to go on the hunt!

Well, different strokes I guess.  i gave it an 81 and found the alcohol too prominent although the majority of reviewers seems to like it

Fingers, you are one of my favorite tasters and authors here on Cellartracker.  I love reading your TN's and, interestingly within the context of this post, I find my interests and palate in line with yours most of the time.  I actually remember reading your notes on this wine when you tasted it.

Quick question, did you decant this at all prior to tasting?  Not that is required nor am I 100% it would make a difference but decanting may have helped with the alcohol integration issue.  I found it a bit hot right out of the bottle when I did my usual quick sniff and taste before decanting.  Just curious!

You may be spot-on, Michael.  No formal decant and additional aeration could have made a big difference initally, but I remember trying it the next day and thought it had lost much of it's good character, as well.  I would also suggest that I may have had higher expectations than I should for a $15 Shiraz.

Best idea; get another and try again!

I was going to recommend the Highway 12 Cab/Merlot, but I was trying to figure out the non-NYC price (to make sure in the real world it is below $15) and did a little googling and ran across this interesting buying strategy.

"When you are in Costco, circle the wine area bins.  When you see a bin almost empty, pick that wine.  Hands down, the wine lovers of Costco have consistent good taste."

This isn't a bad strategy since most avid wine lovers know there are deals to be had at Costco.  However, I would add that if the wine in that empty bin is on the inexpensive side, it is likely also being taken by those who just look for price, and not necessarily quality.   So it's a bit of a crap shoot.

Costco is great for finding many of the wines you know and love for a few bucks cheaper (and sometimes more).  I shy away from picking up untested wines from them, unless they are top producers that I know consistently deliver.

NOT what I opened for tonight: 2003 Kay Brothers Shiraz Amery Vineyards

Minimal fruit on opening, bit too much alcohol, somewhat green on the palate. I keep getting hints of what a decent Aussie shiraz should be -- dark fruit, vanilla, oak, etc - but nothing stays for long. A good Monday wine I guess.

Too make matters worse, I'm fairly certain I paid more than $15. Oh well, the week should get better.

Opened tonight - popped and poured.  05 Flora Springs Merlot.  Currant and red/black fruit come through, with a short to medium finish that featured cherry, vanilla and a some tobacco. Enjoyable for what it is, it doesn’t attempt to overreach.  Putting in this forum because I found it at Costco for under $15, but it was buried under several cases of 2006 which isn't as balanced.  A good choice for cheese and salami plates, as well as basic meals of casseroles or grilled meats.

2003 Guenoc Petite Sirah

I stocked up on this in '06 & '07 for around $12.  It is now drinking splendidly and I'm sorry I went through it all.  More recent vintages did not deliver the same oomph after a change in management at Langtry.  The '02 was "the" wine that gave me the bug and started me with CT and is still the wife's favorite.  I have one bottle of that left and will need to drink this year, I think.  If you find a recent vintage, make sure it's the North Coast or Lake County, not the generic California (the bottles look alike).

Agreed. I like the 2004 (and have one bottle left), but the "bang" was missing with the 2005 vintage.
