Just added a 15 year Balvenie Single Barrel Sherry Cask.
It's pretty good (and pretty expensive...)

Is the Lagavulin 16 as smoky and peaty as the Laghroig 10? I'm more of a Highland Single Malt guy and my palate hasn't developed the Islay intensity yet. Honestly, Laghroig 10 way way too much for me. Maybe if an Islay was not so intense I would like it. Seems to me there must be many styles of Islam scotches but haven't had enough of them to know. My go to is McCallan 12 & 18.

Rick

I would tend to say more smoky and less peaty. Lagavulin sell point is the smoky profile when the Laphroaig is more of a medicinal dram with a peatier side.

IMO I love both, but as someone said I have an Islay prone palate.
...

This.
If you are familiar with Lapsang Souchong tea, that will give you an idea of what Lagavulin 16's character is. Lagavulin and Laphroaig are way out there. (I love them both.)
A lot of Macallan drinkers enjoy Glendronach, which makes some outstanding sherried malts.

KBP mentioned Glendronach and I've had this and it's great. I think based on the responses that Lagavulin isn't for me for a while. I might try a more mellow Islay and would have to go back to the one recotte recommended. S1 has me intrigued with the 15 Year Old Balvenie Sherry Cask because McCallan 12 is aged in sherry casks and is right in my wheelhouse. I'll pick up a Glenrondrach at the same time (Merry Chirstmas to me ). More is better, right?

Through the grace of great friends and my local local pub's excellent "break even bottle" program, I get my face around way more expensive Scotch than, as a person who doesn't really like Scotch, I should.

Saturday had a nice measure of Balvenie Tun 1509 Batch #4 (the at-cost pour at my local for the first two weeks of November). File me under not a fan. Decent nose with stone fruit and some complexity from the mix of barrel-types, but this is young and as such a stinging ripsaw of mean alcohol. It rises in the nose so don't sniff hard, and stings then numbs your mouth as if you were preparing for an old-West tooth extraction. A couple of drops of water help the Scotch open up to really quite expertly conceived peat and smoke in fine balance, but still harsh!

Call my picky, but I'll take my $450 bottle of booze aged to carmelly smooth non-angular nectar; this one is lovely but all elbows.

I drink all three, and I don't agree. Lapsang Souchong is roasted with pine roots, and that's what it tastes like....roasted pine roots. Lagavulin and Laphroaig are both more delicate than that, even at cask strength (I do enjoy Lapsong Souchong, but I have to be in the mood for it, as it is really quite smoky and resiny). LS tastes the way that a forest fire smells. Lagavulin and Laphroaig taste like great Islay single malts....

Lately, I've been really digging Japan whiskies. Hakushu 12 and Hibiki 17 are definitely worth seeking out.

They bring a purity and minerality not often found in Scotland whiskies.

That's a whiskey!

The price for 18yr+ single malts has sky-rocketed over the last several years...which has in turn opened up the market for NAS whiskeys.

Stopped drinking scotch pretty much all together. I still have a nice collection and add some here or there, mostly just hoping they'll be worth something down the line somewhere. The prices have gotten ridiculous, and the NAS prices are also out of control for an NAS. Even everyone I know stopped drinking it and moved on to bourbon, although I've also seen their prices starting to get out of hand as well. All the better though, as it freed up a lot of funds to pad my '15 and '16 Bordeaux collection :)

Man that sounds good. Dalmore Cigar Malt is one of my favorites; I've never had the 18, but I can't imagine it would be inferior to the Cigar Malt.

I've just about quit Scotch, but not by choice; the stuff has risen beyond my means. I used to buy the Cigar malt for $34/bottle just 10 years ago; it's about $120 now.

I can't afford to replace the bottles of older single malts that I have, so I'm rationing them. I understand the rise of the NAS whiskeys, and I've had some I've enjoyed, but no matter what they do--quarter casks, sherry/port/madeira/whatever finish--nothing is quite the same as a single malt that has sat in a barrel for the better part of two decades or longer. That's an itch that nothing else scratches for me.

I should've noted this: I drank from both The Glencairn Scotch glass and a GGG stem and much preferred the wine glass. This was really amazing whiskey and the delicate stem was the perfect vessel.

Also, in talking about Laphroig and Glendronach above, I had a dram of Ardbeg (10?) the other day and, WHAM!!! That was a taste I won't soon forget. It was the most intensely smoky Scotch I've had by a mile...and I've had quite a bit of the Laphroig and some of the Glendronach. Wowza! Not for the faint of heart.

No Age Statement. The Macallan has been a leader in this area and Glenmorangie and many others are beginning to follow suit. It doesn't mean its bad or inferior whiskey...it just allows them to take more liberties.

Has anyone here tried the Glenglassaugh Revival? I can get it locally for $58 and was wondering if I should try a bottle.

I did a Dalmore seminar last week and found I really like Highlamd Scotch. We had the 12, 15, 18 year and the Cigar malt , which I ended up buying. It was half the price of the Alexander III. Pretty tasty stuff

I also went back and bought some Macallan 12 year as it is their bourbon then Sherry style rather than their oak series 10 and 15 year bottles.

It’s anazing what a bottle of 18 year old Macallan costs. The 18 year old Dalmore cost $229US, that night and they sold out.

The Dalmore had a very beautiful younger Single Malt specialist that was both entertaining and informative. I have shyed away from Scotch as I am not a peat smell fan, so Islay and Campbelltown styles really turn me off. Blended styles still have some of that peaty smoke, so it wasn’t my thing. I like Irish and aged Rum. Now I find another expensive dragon to chase...

We also drank from The Falmore’s CCC stems and I loved it. I went home and retried my whisky glass using some Irish and decided I liked a regular low “rocks” glass, not that I would ever drink whisky any other way but neat.

I love the Cigar Malt but can't stomach the price now. Believe it or not, back around 10-12 years ago, we used to buy it at a store in Annapolis for $34! I wish I'd known then how the price would climb......

You can say this across almost the entire spectrum of whisk(e)y as the popularity and demand for it has grown.

Not really. This is pretty prevalent to Scotch. Other whiskey certainly hasn't elevated in price like scotch has. A very few cult bourbons maybe but the scotch is clearly the worst offender by far.

I'll agree that Scotch is the most egregious, but unless maybe you're drinking JD and Wild Turkey, prices have gone up radically across the board. Obviously some more than others.

We talked about this but with Scottish labeling rules there just isn’t enough supply to meet demand which is why houses like Macallan have been doing so many cuvee type NAS blends with different barrels suited for food pairing.

You just can’t have a time machine and single malt means a single distillery. Aged rums are starting to climb but we’re a bargain before the last few years and so many places can make rum and the rules are nowhere near as strick or enforced.

Sorry if this has been talked about before but decided to try some Dalwhinnie 15 year old from Traders Joes along with my usual Balvenie 12 year old Double Wood. For the money is there a better Scotch with a similar QPR? I’d like to know what it is. This is going to be my “go to” scotch now as it is exceptional.

Macallan 12 year old used to be my favorite but it’s mostly $60 now. I think this Dalwhinnie is actually smoother than the Macallan and Balvenie. The flavor profile I like a lot and curious what thoughts are on this one. I don’t get more complexity of flavors with Macallan or Balvenie but I only tried it for the first time last night. Getting ready to fire up a glass right now.

This was the end of the Scotch club's public event.
It was followed later by a private event convened at the President's home.

This was the end of the private event, which, coincidentally had precisely the same 2 attendees as the public event.
