At long last...

One of the dreams of the "new site" was to feature a nicely integrated user-interface concept to let you select one or more wines/bottles/purchases/notes and pick a variety of BULK editing actions. We have the nice UI concept, but it has always been on my todo list to flesh out lots and LOTS of different editing actions. Alas, my todo list has just been way too long for the past two years. With Dan cranking away on the mobile site/apps, I am finally getting enough time to roll up my sleeves and get some good coding done.

Anyway, I just unrolled one of the most requested features on CellarTracker over the years: BULK RELOCATE, specifically from the WINES view of MY CELLAR as opposed to the INDIVIDUAL BOTTLE view. We have always supported bulk relocate from the bottle view, but now, at last, in the regular MY CELLAR view you can pick one more wines and pick RELOCATE on the bulk actions toolbar. You can also filter your cellar to a specific LOCATION or BIN (or bottle size) before you pick the wine to relocate, and only the relevant bottles will then be relocated in bulk.

So one of the most common questions is how to I rename or get rid of a location. Now that is very easy.
1) Click MY CELLAR
2) Pick the SUMMARIZE BY dropdown and pick LOCATION.
3) Click on the specific LOCATION or BIN to filter.
4) Then pick the checkbox at the top of the list of wines to pick them all.
5) Click the RELOCATE button on the bulk actions toolbar and pick a new LOCATION and/or a BIN. (If you do not choose one then existing data will be retained. If you need to CLEAR the bin, there is a specific checkbox for that.)

I'm not done yet. In the future, I plan to add another choice to let you pick WINES or BOTTLES and then bring them up in a grid with 1 row per bottle so that you can freeform edit the location and bin of EACH bottle in bulk.

In other bulk editing news, last week I made other long overdue changes. Now all of the normal per-wine bulk actions (add to cellar, drink or remove, add tasting notes, or add to my wish list) also work in other views (consumed bottles, individual bottles, purchases, pending deliveries, tasting notes, private notes).

Also coming soon: bulk editing of purchases beyond the existing option to bulk-deliver pending wines. This will include bulk editing store names, purchase dates, delivery dates, prices etc. After that I will be working on bulk update of consumed bottles (e.g. bulk change the consumption tupe, bulk undrink). And after that, I want to add a bunch of other bulk actions such as bulk editing drinking windows, food pairing tags, values and prices.

Now many of these bulk actions are best accomplished in views that are specific to the object. So for example, bulk setting the price of a wine would by definition blast over ALL purchases of that wine (since the same wine can be purchased many times). So editing from the PURCHASE view is likely the safest action.

Anyway, enjoy!

Hi Eric,

This all sounds great. What is really missing and was discussed years ago, is the ability to track empty bins in a cellar. Not a graphical interface but just a database of available bin locations, particularly for those of us that use mostly single bottle bins. With all these great upgrades and both of your expertise, it can't be that difficult to program this.

Hopefully soon.

Sorry, the total overhaul of the underlying schema for storage is not coming as soon. That is a much deeper overhaul.

Hi Eric,

Glad to see the update.

When I try to relocate several bottles I receive the message " Missing Bottle ID" and cannot complete the move.

Please let me know if I am doing something wrong or missing a step.

Thanks

Rob

Looking at the logs, I think it is cranky with your specified choice of bin filter (n/a) which the site uses in other places to denote a blank bin. If you remove that then everything works.
Now let me see about fixing that so it works as you intend...

OK, fixed. Now if you have a Bin filter on (n/a) it works as intended to only select bottles with blank bins for relocation.

OK, I have just turned on bulk-editing support for purchases (and pending deliveries). You can now go to your list of purchases, select as many as you want, and then bulk replace the store name, price, purchase date, delivery date or purchase note.

So if you have typos in your store names, now you can update dozens of purchases in one steps. If you want to tend to the expected delivery dates for pending purchases, now you can bulk update that in seconds.

The last action I want to add for purchases is the ability to "un-deliver" wine (e.g. to select a group of purchases and mark those as pending delivery). This one is a little tricky though, since, if you pick a wine where you have consumed bottles, what is your intent when you want to un-deliver those? Is that just for the unconsumed bottles? Or or do you want to undrink all of the bottles as well? Regardless, when I add the bulk support I will likely give you a choice.

Anyway, that is next. And then I will likely move onto bulk editing of consumed bottles.

Awesome, looking forward to these bulk features, I intuitively know they'll pave over a number of "gah!" moments I've had. :)

Fair enough, I can see given that you have no model for locations and capacities (it's just a string), that would be hard.

That said, what would really help me is a simple export of locations and qty in those locations, I can setup a spreadsheet that knows what the maxes are. Then I can figure out where the holes are. Maybe there' said way I can do this already with the export functions you have? I sheepishly admit I haven't mastered those yet. :/

You should investigate the RASANDLER spreadsheet referred to here: https://www.cellartracker.com/forum/tm.asp?m=58794&mpage=1&key=rasandler𞤀

OK, now you can bulk edit purchases to mark them as PENDING DELIVERY. This is basically the polar opposite of the option to accept pending delivers and add them to inventory. The one option is whether consumed bottles should be impacted. By default, consumed bottles are left alone, but there is a checkbox to allow you to force these to be unconsumed at the same the bottles are marked as pending delivery.

OK, bulk editing of consumed bottles is now deployed.

I also added support for bulk deletion of purchases and consumed bottles. And I re-worked the UI for bulk deletion of bottles (from individual bottle view) to pull the weird *DELETE WITHOUT RECORDING item out of the consumption type list and instead have a more consistent and elevated link to delete the bottom of the dialog.

I also re-worked the MY CELLAR view of PURCHASED/PENDING and also the CONSUMED bottles view to be more consistent with the wine sub pages. Now there are elevated buttons to EDIT, UN-DRINK and to ACCEPT DELIVERY for pending purchases.

Enjoy!

I forgot. I also did some significant caching/performance work in relation to bulk accepting pending deliveries, bulk undelivering and bulk editing of purchases. I tested this a lot, but there is always a chance I broke something. Please let me know if you see anything odd.

OK, drumroll, this is long awaited.

At long last, for you "single binners" especially, now you can BULK RELOCATE individual bottles AND specify a location and bin for EACH INDIVIDUAL BOTTLE.

Just click on WINES in your MY CELLAR view. Or click on BOTTLES in your INDIVIDUAL BOTTLE view.
Hover your mouse over any row, and you will see a checkbox to the left. Click it. Then you can select as many other rows as you need.
Click the RELOCATE button that appears on the bulk actions toolbar.

The default dialog is as it always has been. One place to specify the LOCATION and BIN for all bottles. However there is also now a sticky toggle to "Relocate each bottle individually."

That brings up a form with one row per bottle. And there you can individual assign the LOCATION and BIN for EVERY SINGLE bottle individually.

Enjoy!!!!

Has this not gone live yet? Or is there some action I need to take to activate this? I ask because when I click on the my wines tab in the My Cellar view there is no dark bulk actions toolbar with red buttons on it between the Narrow Results/Summarize by buttons and the line with Vintage/Name/Variety as there is in your picture.

And now in final testing, hopefully to deploy this weekend: single bottle location editing when accepting pending deliveries -- if you want that. Currently when accepting pending deliveries, because the site used to lack single-bottle relocation, I used to take the list of recently accepted bottles and would throw you into the scan view with those bottles. It worked but was a bit clunky and broke the flow. Now, once I deploy my changes, the ACCEPT PENDING dialog will have a checkbox to "Edit the location and bin for each bottle". That is sticky and remembered across actions. When it is checked, after the bottles are accepted the dialog comes up with one row for each bottle so you can tab through and edit the location and bin for each one.

I will let you know as soon as it is live.

OK, this is live now. When you accept a pending delivery, look for the checkbox that says: "Edit the location and bin for each bottle?"

Enjoy!

Wow. Just noticed the RELOCATE button on the Wines screen and got so excited I looked for this thread.

After reading it, I noticed that you can also edit BINs when shipments are received now.

Great news. Cellartracker is definitely starting 2015 on the right foot. Congrats Eric, awesome work.

Eric - I must be doing something wrong when I try to change the location of a bin of wine (=one solid case). When I click on MYCellar/Summarize by/Location/[specific bin], I get the tasting notes page for that wine and not a list of the bottles in the bin. And when I click on that bin in the edit sidebar to the right, I do not get a "relocate" button. Please advise.
Thanks, arahl

Please read this. It has pretty screenshots.

There is no reason to be summarizing by a bin.

Hi Eric , I like bulk and individual editing but when getting wines from bond and putting in my Cellar I also need to ADD VAT and DUTY to the cost

UPC/EAN should have a better hit rate than that, although it is fundamentally flawed based on the sloppiness of the industry. (Sorry, there is no more polite way to say.)
