Just finished, but will have to re-read. An intellectual struggle for me. Never read C.S. Lewis before. Makes you think. Now on to a novel to give the gray matter a rest and changeup.

Status: offline 		Over the Christmas vacation week I finished reading “The Name of the Wind” by Patrick Rothfuss.

I thought this was a well written story and really enjoyed reading this book. This is not a genre I normally read and must admit I felt like I was being tortured the first 200 pages of this book. However, I persisted and once it reached a turning point where the main character began to chronicle his youth and days at university it slowly but surely drew me in and made for an enjoyable read. I’ll likely soon read the second book in this Kingkiller Chronicle.

Status: offline 		Just finished the latest Jack Reacher novel (The Midnight Line). Lee Child seems to purposefully make him seem even larger than in previous novels. The exact opposite of casting Tom Cruise as Reacher.

Not my favorite of the Reacher series, but a good read never-the-less.

A very nice plan. I too have started to get back to reading more. Catching up on the last year or so of New York Review of Books. And reading a few books on Zimbabwe (work-related), and not directly work related, Erik Larson's In the Garden of Beasts, that covers the life of the US Ambassador to Berlin in 1933 and 1934, just as Hitler was coming to power. Like all of Larson's work, it is pretty easy to read; seems well researched, but is not burdened with footnotes. I find the latter sometimes liberating, and other times a bit annoying (at least the academic in me!). Very enjoyable reading though. Some of the reviews try to tie it to our current political situation. I am no fan of the current administration, but I do think one needs to be careful of such comparisons. I do think Larson illustrates how easy it is to be complacent or less principled when faced with clearly wrongful activity. For that it is applicable to the current situation, but also I would argue more broadly to any time and place given the large amount of injustice still in the world. As I go on, I realize this should also be cross posted to one bottle consumed alone -- though I have only had about two glasses (of an excellent Hermitage given to me by my Secret Santa this year!). Back to cooking dinner, that Hermitage, and eventually more of Erik Larson......

Status: offline 		Today I finished reading my first book of 2018. “Grant” by Ron Chernow. This massive tome was a significant effort for me to finish. Normally a huge fan of biographies, particularly historical and war based biographies, this 1,104 page work was both a physical and mental challenge to complete in under three weeks of concentrated effort. Chocked full of detail, well researched and written I still found it a bit dry in the details and circuitous on the subject of Grant’s drinking problem. Still it was a good read and very informative albeit a bit long and difficult read at times. Still I’d recommend it with those caveats.

Status: offline 		Today I finished reading my second book of 2018. “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak. I’ve been meaning to read this book for years but never got around to it. I finally read it on eBook on loan from the library and made pretty quick work of it finishing it in a little over 5 days. It is easy to read with a good flow and interesting story line. It takes a bit of getting used to up front with the cryptic introduction to each “Part” of the book but after a few sections you’re in flow with the book and onto the story line. Good read. I enjoyed it.

Nothing of great import, like Moby Dick or War & Peace. Just a bunch of various books.

I've had Frank Herbert's Dune sitting on a table, half finished, for a year. I just can't get uninterrupted time.

(BTW: I've already read Dune, but that was over 30 years ago. Thought it was time for a re-read.)

Status: offline 		"Cork Dork" by Bianca Bosker. I'm about 2/3rds through and it's an enjoyable read no matter what your level of wine experience, education or curiosity. Something for everyone and each chapter could be a new book.

Phil, that's my modus operandi. I'll read like a locavore devouring books huge bites at a time and then POOF. A book sits on my nightstand for a year and never pick anything up for a year.

Well-crafted fiction with a lot of canny observations. He doesn't wrestle in any meaningful way with "the big ideas" but the book has vivid characters and well-researched history.

As a bonus, an awful lot of talk about food and wine in the story. So much so that I'd say food and wine could both be considered characters driving the narrative forward.

Status: offline 		Today I finished reading my third book of 2018. “Far from the Tree” by Robin Benway. This book originally came onto my radar when I saw a clip on it on PBS Newshour. I followed that up with some online summaries and reviews and added it to my to-read shelf. Although technically what I’ll call a Youth Novel I found this story to be compelling and moving and it reads at a level that you and your children can both read and and discuss this timely subject of adoption, foster care and nuclear families. It is an easy and quick read and I thought it is one of the best books I’ve read recently and highly recommend it.

I just finished it as well and agree completely with your assessment. Not amazing literature, but a very compelling story, pretty well told, and lots of fun bits, including with food and wine. I would give it a pretty high recommendation.

Finished what may be one of the most eye opening (and decently engaging) non-fiction books I've read in a long time. The Siege of Mecca - Yaroslav Trofimov

If you've ever wondered why there were so many Saudi Arabian hijackers on 9.11...if you've ever wondered why America and the "West" is portrayed as the "Great Satan"...if you've ever wanted to understand how one decade we could be funding Osama bin Laden and the next we are fending him off...?

This book has very little to do with terrorism or bin Laden, but has everything to do with the rift within Islam, the specific timing (1979 and Carter) that led to the change in the face of the Middle East and Islamic policy, etc. Fascinating read, and if you do Audible Audio (as I do for many books) it is very well narrated.
