This summer a group of friends has been exploring the world of grower champagnes. This past Saturday was the second of a series of mini tastings where we taste three grower champagnes side by side and follow them over the course of a few hours. Champagnes were paired with salumi and cheese platter and consumed in a leisurely fashion. Today's choices were all Blancs de Noirs, with two 100% Pinot Noir selections and one 100% Pinot Meunier.

NV Benoît Lahaye Champagne Grand Cru Brut Essentiel - France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Golden hay colored - ever so slightly cloudy. Nice nose of apple, lemon and dough. Very full and round on the palate, zingy acidity, brioche notes, and minerality. My favorite of the flight - really enjoyed this and will seek out this producer again.

2011 Ulysse Collin Champagne Les Maillons - France, Champagne

This is an interesting one - having read this improved with air we experimented and popped and poured half the bottle and decanted the other half. The PnP portion seemed quite generic, clean and sharp with a nice mousse - but undistinguished. By contrast the decanted portion really opened up and shined in the glass. The qualities of the underlying wine really stood out with a slight oxidative note, lemon curd, green apples and minerals. It was like drinking two completely different wines. This was my 2nd favorite but a close second to the Benoit LaHaye.

2008 Christophe Mignon Champagne Brut Nature - France, Champagne

The nose on this was very funky and yeasty - blew off a bit with airtime. This one is quite bracing, the low dosage stands out because it lacks the richer more vinous qualities of the Ulysses Collin Maillons and the Benoit LaHaye. One of the tasters found this to be their favorite - while myself and the others had this in last place. I think this ultimately is a style decision - for me i find this a bit to lean and severe.

Very interesting line up with two champagnes that I would gladly drink again (Lahaye and Collin) and one that I will probably not seek out (Mignon) after having tried it on two occasions. The first tasting in July, introduced me to three producers I would gladly drink again (Laherte Freres, Fallet Prevostat and Pierre Gimonet). We have also learned about the benefits of decanting certain styles of grower champagne for optimum enjoyment (specifically the Collin and the Fallet Prevostat). Looking forward to part III where we will try Selosse, Agrapart and Cedric Bouchard.

Thanks for sharing...
There is so much wine to try!

2014 G.D. Vajra Moscato d'Asti

Perfect for lunch with sun-dried tomato ravioli. Also by the pool on a very hot day, as is the case today.

Gotta a feeling something else bubbly will get killed before we move on to a red and steak on the 'Q tonight

For us adults at a birthday party for my oldest brother's 2-yr old great granddaughter, which makes me a great, great uncle.
Remarkably well received by the guests and always an amazing value for $15-20.

NV Gruet Winery Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs Sauvage

I want to always have some of this in the cellar

2001 Charles Ellner Champagne Brut "Seduction" Millésimé

Much more enjoyable this time over the previous bottle - much brighter in flavor and younger seeming.

A month and no one's popping bubbly? For shame!

2009 Guiborat Fils Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut

Opened last night and was so nervy and wound up. Much more generous after a long aeration and should probably hold a few more years before trying again. Great stuff once it was open for business.

NV Clos du Moulin aux Moines Bourgogne-Aligoté Bulles du Moulin

This was a great mid-$20's sparkler for an afternoon meat and cheese platter. Happy to have two more

< BUMP! >

2004 Pierre Gimonnet & Fils Champagne Blanc de Blancs Extra-Brut Oenophile - omg so good and just exactly what was needed.
NV Billecart-Salmon Champagne Brut Rosé Millésimé (.375) - because the first bottle just wasn't enough!

NV Chartogne Taillet Brut Rosé - Love this stuff - currently my favorite house sparkling wine. Aromas of strawberry, nice mousse, minerals and red fruit, and after warming to room temp, much more complex with a lingering finish. Just delicious for the price.

NV Egly-Ouriet Champagne Grand Cru VP

Disgorged July '15 and a long stretch of road ahead, but quite sublime on this warm spring evening.

Dinner at Kings Fish House to celebrate the sale of Dr. B's clinic this week:

2013 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne Blanc de Noirs Côte de Val Vilaine

Wonderful bubbly. It struck my brain and taste buds exactly like Dom P, based on my few tastings of Dom. A sampler dozen of oysters to start, halibut and Alaskan crab legs as entrees, apple cobbler on the back end. No corkage charge. And no more 10-hour, 6-days a week job for the Mrs.
What more can I want? Well, I'm thinking another Champers today for real Sparkling Saturday!

Sadly, only a transition. Retirement being delayed until we can handle that daily stress, like you and Don

Tasting fee? Bet you will be able to purchase unblinded in the seemingly unlikely event you like some juice. I'd probably spend the tasting fee on a Cava and be done with it, but that's me.

Just curious...

My fav LWS does some decent tastings on Saturdays w/prices ranging from $10 - $20 or so depending upon what they are pouring. The participants leave with a handy shopping list. Tasting room in back of store. Have to walk thru the store to exit. Good marketing move. Have not yet tried the experience, but also have not been disappointed with their wines in all price ranges I purchase.

Doing an impromptu off-line up at Lake Sunapee in New Hampshire.
Opening a 2007 Perrier-jouet Belle Époque tonight.

That will be in addition to some Franny Beck, Ladera Sauvignon Blanc (similar to Merry Edwards in flavor profile) and some nice 2007 Coombsville cabs from RockinCabs (Kobalt, Realm, Carter)

Last time we opened a 2006 Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin - La Grande Dame - (another nice sparkler).

Always a good excuse to open something nice

Tasting fee?

No fee.
We bring our own; the shop owner only provided one bottle
4 Champagne (3 of them QUITE good)
1 Cava (dog of the day)
1 Huet (not on form IMO)
1 Chidaine (ditto--heartbreakingly so)
1 Carneros PetNat (ERF!!)
another PetNat--this one Rose (also not so good)

Then a '10 Kapscandy Endre for those of us who needed something red (de-LISH)

Not too eager to try a Pet Nat. I have had very decent Cava, but they are considered inconsistent. Have a reliable producer <$10 in Jaume Serra Cristalino line, but that's our taste. Your mileage may vary.

Sparkling Cheers!
