Coming up on our 30th anniversary in a few weeks and I would like to open a bottle of "something 1987". Not smart enough to know how the various wines have aged over the years nor do I know/trust the sellers. Any suggestions on both wines and proven wine merchants?
Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Excellent, when I finished my post I saw Cran Burgundy had posted with the same wine while I was typing!

Thanks for the replies! One of those caught my eyes last week, but just not sure about buying a 30 year old vintage from someone I don't know....

Any credible wine distributors?

I would stick with Napa for 1987 - Dunn Howell Mountain should still be drinking well with good provenance as is the Beringer Private Reserve and Robert Mondavi Reserve. Of the top of my head, I don't think any of the wine regions in Europe produced anything worth the current price. I was underwhelmed with a Antinori Solaia I had a few years ago.

The Dunn is a good call too, had one 2 years ago still excellent. I drink mostly old world these days but for 87 I think California Cabernet may be the best bet.

Idea One: Had good luck contacting a CA winery, Sterling, and they had a mag of vintage the year we were married. Basically a Meritage but bottled before that term became widely known. Had it shipped directly to us so minimal handling. 20th anniversary wine. Most elegant.

Idea Two: consider an Italian. Barolo or Brunello would be my choices.

Idea Three: consider a Rioja Gran Reserva.

Gotta throw out ideas besides US just in case. To be different. And, since $ constraints aren't mentioned it is possible that non-CA may offer better values.

To each his own vino....

Congrats Cheers!

This
'87 was a very poor vintage throughout Europe (although 30 yr Tawny Port might be an option). I would be surprised to see any '87s from Europe still kicking except at the very highest levels. Even then it would be a crap-shoot.

That was a great year for Dunn.

You'd need to use winesearcher to see who even has it. Looking, of the ones that do, Schneiders is the only one we've ordered from. Always worked well, but not sure we've done much old wine from them.

Reading thru additional posts, I'll add that Dunn has a reputation of aging well across many vintages. According to some fellow well-informed non-CTer geeks. I have never had aged Dunn, but still. Does seem a reliable producer.

Checking WineSearcher, though, got no hits for 1987 in the US. Could be an adventure to acquire -- unless the winery has some as library.

Good luck w/the search!

The only wine I had from the '87 vintage was the 1987 Diamond Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Red Rock Terrace which I had 5 years ago. It is probably still in good shape so am pilling on to the '87 Napa meme here.

I've never had a Dunn that old, so if anyone wants to volunteer a bottle at an offline I'd be willing to sample it. Oldest for me so far was 2003, which I tried a few years ago, and it was nowhere near ready.

Thanks to all for the feedback. Looks like I will pick up a Caymus Special Select Cab. Looking forward this bottle as I have never tried anything earlier than a '95.

Picked up the Caymus Special Select and also a mag of 1987 Joël Taluau Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil Vieilles Vignes (Cab Franc). The guys at K&L say they opened one last weekend and "it was drinks g very nicely". $69 for the mag was worth a try. I'll be reporting out in a few weeks

Wow. Turns out the Cab Franc is also available for our anniversary year vintage. A possibility given the price!
