Record low consumption - partially because my own home made wines are getting better, and i've consumed more beer.

Purchases up big this year, and that's without purchasing any 2015 or 2016 Bordeaux futures. I blame Burgundy.

Cellar is beginning to take up too much space.

..... and some enabling from us here.

Actually, Burgundy opened up some space in my cellar. Each bottle of Burgundy cost 2 to 3 times more than the bottles of Cab I shipped off to a reseller.

I was loading up my last Wienbox overflow and the wife stopped by to comment I may have a buying problem which is not quite as serious as a drinking problem. I did buy 150 less this year. Consumed 50 less, so cellar retracted by 100 for the year.

Technically speaking, it became a problem when all my 2013 & 2014 Bordeaux futures arrived. Emotionally speaking, i think it's completely normal to have OWC's stacked up to the ceiling. Doesn't everybody have this????

As of today, within wine & beer budget. Even accounting for wine purchased as holiday gifts 2017, known incoming wine for 2018 (one case) within the 2017 budget. Did use part, but not all of my gift cards and applied one cash gift to wine. No further wine purchases planned for remainder of 2017. Did not track consumption per se, but it may have slightly decreased. I seem to have more wine-free nights, DH seems to have beer more frequently than wine.

Increased cooler capacity from 50 to 90+ bottles for the best stuff. This forced a reorganization of what I had and when I target drink dates. And, when we bought the cooler, I refined and simplified my cellar strategy to focus on the 4 countries I know best. I believe this helped me better target my purchases. I'm no saint but I am frugal.

Cheap...I mean Frugal Cheers!

I would say that I did pretty good this year. I wanted to stay at around 500 bottles in my cellar. Currently, I have 482 in stock with 15 pending. I purchased 131 bottles this year, compared to 134 last year and consumed 126 this year compared to 80 last year. My goal for next year is to continue to stay under 500 bottles. I don’t see that working out so well...

It's a tough job, but I think you're up to the challenge. If not, I'm sure there are nearby CT members who can help.

This!

that and while bottle count has been going down (on acquisitions vs. cellar size) the price per bottle figure remains above 2013 levels. (The last year it was probably sane)

Nice chart Chris.

Not quite ready to run the year end numbers yet, but I think I'll hit my buying plan of 500 bottles, which is a 33% reduction from 2016's 750 bottles. Consumption will be a bit below that, but cellar growth will be modest this year. The 2018 buying plan is 450, as I continue to ratchet down purchases to stabilize cellar size.

Don't think I bought any wine over $75 this year; really few bottles overall. Still drawing down our numbers from the peak in 2012 that was 700 or 880 bottles or some damn thing like that. Under 200 now, I think. A few nice whites yet, mostly reds, a good number of vintage ports, some sauternes. Even with drinking less, it sure was a fast year.

Any time you need some help drinking Vintage Port or Sauternes, you let me know. We'll make a pitstop on the way to Florida in the Spring.

I hate these threads.

Bottles purchased up 29.4%*

Dollars spent up 47.8%**

Bottles consumed down 59.6%***

* I blame Tim for this.
** I also blame Tim for this.
***I don't blame Tim for this. If he had a bigger hand in consumption, I'd expect it to be up by this much, not down. 2016 was an anomaly due to splitting off a sizable chunk of my cellar. Compared to 2015, consumption is still down, but only by 10.7%. And 2017 ain't over yet!

Much like Cran... I'm also a fan of older Sauternes, and would love to a) share some bottles with new friends (I'll bring Burgs or Tuscans or Champs or Juras or Red Bdx or Saumur, or whatever), b) buy some older Sauternes, or c) trade some Burgs or Tuscans or Red Bdx or whatever for older Sauternes.

I think I held to my new years resolution for this year...buy less, drink more

Bottles Purchased is down 21% from last year
Money spent is down 23% from last year (buying less higher end wines)
Consumption up by 12% from last year
The cellar only grew 4.4% this year, growth ratio is 1.2 (purchases/consumed)

Still have the rest of December to reduce the cellar growth, but my local has bubbles on sale soo it probably won't change.

Last year we were constructing our cellar so I was very cautious about delaying purchases. We ended 2016 with the exactly same number of bottles consumed as purchased. This year I took to filling the vacant spaces in the cellar so I purchased 14% more bottles at 23% higher cost. However, we ended up with a very large build of inventory because consumption fell with a positive pregnancy test and I couldn't hold my own drinking for two. YTD we have a net growth of 117 bottles in the cellar. The cellar bottle occupancy is probably in the range of 95%-98% of actual capacity (stated capacity is much higher but these Oregon Pinot and Washington Syrah bottles take up too much room) which feels perfect for having flexibility about keeping similar regions, grapes, producers, etc together. The first quarter is always a big quarter for club purchases/allocations so I'm starting to think about what will be shipped next spring and making room in those areas of the cellar so that I can avoid disorganization.

Burgundy is the area of the cellar that is the tightest right now. We might be down to 1-2 open slots. If you find yourself in Minneapolis...

Okay - math stuff is not my strong suit - but I think we (mr cookie and i) should be patting ourselves on the back.

We consumed 96 fewer bottles than last year (surprise!)
We purchased 174 fewer bottles than last year (goals!)
For a net 6.5 cases fewer bottles in the celllar! (snoopy dancing!)

However our average cost per bottle went up $15 over last year (we're drinking well!)
That's not totally surprising though, we've made a few mailing lists that we've been trying to get on for a long time… though now I'm no longer convinced I *want* to be on them.

We are so out of space, so even a small amount of down-sizing gives me hope that one day I will have all our wine in the house.

Consumed more (254 2017 vs 195 2016)
Purchased more (296 - 2017 vs 248 - 2016)
For a net gain of 4 cases to be dealt with in storage.

Not so good...
