May 4-6, 2018
Walla Walla, Washington

OK Folks, this is a long time coming and I will be editing this post in the coming days.

We have initial plans to have our first ever CT Washington Release party during Spring Release Weekend in Walla Walla, first weekend in May.

This will be a very special weekend for me and many others on our CT forum. The 2016 CT Washington wines were made in memory of our dear friend Drycab, and while we will celebrate the great persona Brad was, we will also take time to celebrate three vintages of amazing wines made for the CT community by our friends at Rasa Vineyards (thanks Pinto and Billo), and the vineyard owners who have so graciously allowed us to have amazing fruit to work with (thanks Steve & Mary Robertson, Hugh & Kathy Shiels).

We are still planning out the details, but here is some of what you can expect;

  • Vineyard tours of SJR Vineyard with Steve and Robertson...Explore the history of The Rocks District of Milton Freewater, take a time journey of the Missoula floods, kick some cobbles, and learn everything you never knew about the MHT pruning and training approach pioneered by Delmas.

  • Release and Pickup of CT Washington 2016 wines (there are still some available, and you'll curse yourself later if you don't get some! I've tasted barrel samples, and they are outstanding!)

  • Release Party at Rasa Vineyards with food, wine, fun, and ChrisInSunnyside playing bagpipes for entertainment

  • Special Release Party only availability of Library releases of CT Washington Wines (2012, 2014), Rasa, and Delmas wines.

I'll be updating this post regularly as we work out the details, but I wanted to get this out there for everyone to see and maybe add to your calendars. Stay tuned!

Just announced! Pinto and I spoke today, he said in appreciation for CT community support of Rasa over the years, and in honor of Drycab, let's pop some corks and do a vertical tasting of every vintage of Creative Impulse released!

Saturday May 5th

SJR Vineyard in The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater, 11 am, Vineyard tour with Steve Robertson
Deep dive into the evolution of The Rocks District with Steve Robertson, owner of SJR Vineyard and Delmas Winery. Wear comfortable clothes/shoes and prepare to be wowed at the power of Mother Nature and Syrah!

This sounds awesome. I'm sad I'm going to miss but our second child is due in mid-April and there is zero chance of convincing my wife the timing is right.

We considered it (and having missed the past 5 Cayuse weekends I'd wish we could) but it wasn't possible. Sorry.

More critical is WHAT are you going to wear UNDER that kilt???

Guys, as a number of you know, Dr. M and I love our reunions with our friends in WA wine country but with the new house purchase and the uncertainties of new expenses at the moment, I think we better take a pass on this festive gathering. However, I look forward to getting my allocation before the Deep South shipping get comes down for the first half of 2018.

Sounds like a great release party - will have to see if we can make the dates work.

Please don't be too authentic with the kilt...

Hollow has asked my help in providing musical entertainment, as well as some logistics since I've done a couple of CT wino herding events in Eastern Washington previously.

A thing or two that may not be obvious. This one IS obvious, Walla Walla is a pain in the a$$ to get to.

Options for getting there are many and maybe less obvious, and I'll suggest a few for anyone contemplating coming, particularly for those from outside of the PacNW region.

Direct flights to Walla Walla don't exist, the ALW airport is served only by Alaska Air through Seattle. Nearest airport with some other options is Tri-Cities (Pasco) PSC, Washington, about 45 minutes drive away.

That said, the scenic routes flying into Seattle, WA, or Portland, OR then driving about 5 hours (or more with stops) back east are spectacular. Portland to Walla Walla via the Columbia Gorge is a drive I've done close to a hundred times and I still marvel every time. Plenty of wine or beer tasting stops along the way, including Hollow's cellar.

Seattle to W2 by highway takes you through the Palm Springs of WA, worth the trip by itself, and much of the rest of eastern WA wine (and hops, and apple) country. Routes through Mt Rainier National Park are slower but stunning. About halfway from Seattle to Walla Walla by either driving route is Goat Rocks Vineyard on the outskirts of Yakima. We will welcome anyone who wants to pull weeds and spray sulfur detour for a tour.

The cities of Portland and Seattle are not bad tourist destinations either. One is rumored to have a professional baseball team, but I've never seen any evidence.

My point is, if it works for your schedule, plan a day or two extra for travel and sightseeing.

Thanks for the info, Chris. Highly unlikely that we will make the trip from SoCal, but certainly participating in the Rasa/DryCab release. Half-case, 3 of each. Looking forward to the wine.

Cheers!

I'm going to try and make this... more than likely will be solo. But how dare Walla Walla not have a Marriott or SPG hotel within 40 miles. HAHA.

Make sure they know about the bagpipes! might want to avoid the subject of kilts.

Would be nice to see WW without risk of smoke inhalation this time! Also May 4 is my bday. Will bounce the idea off Christina. Love to be there.

I looked into the logistics of getting to WW. It's hard to get there. There are no direct flights from Ft. Lauderdale to Portland or Seattle. Then there is a second flight to WW (or a long drive). I still want to go, but the arrangements

Delta flies Salt Lake City to Lewiston ID which is only about 2 hours by car. Worth stopping at Basalt Cellars in Clarksburg WA.

Alaska Air flies direct FLL to SEA (AS35) and back (AS38). A couple of daily hops over to W2, might require an overnight near SeaTac. I know all those hotels since Yakima hops have the same issue.

Delta also flies Salt Lake to PSC, Tri Cities WA about 45 minutes drive from Walla Walla.

Yep, it's hard to get there, but it's worth it.

Are there any itineraries planned yet? I would like to fly in for the long weekend and leave Sunday, if possible. Unfortunately, my knowledge of Washington State Wines is very low, so I would like to do a bit of tasting and exploring. But with work, wife, kids, etc, my trip (if at all possible), will have to be brief. Even so, I would not want to miss the bagpipes.
