OK, so we don't have a thread for this here, and I know that I'm an outlier, and a sad sack who's on his own on Xmas eve, but...

2014 Mas Amiel Altaïr
2016 Mas Amiel Maury Sec Légende
NV U més U fan Tres Cava Brut 1 1=3
2017 Hugh Hamilton Sangiovese The Floozie

With various cold cuts, cheese, duck terrine, and so on... Over about 9 hours.

(Oh, and 3 litres of water)

What is such a posting supposed to say? I've been enjoying various stuff on Netflix (Demitri Martin strongly recommended) and Youtube. Still here. 2am local time. I guess I shouldn't open a fifth bottle. Tempted by a glass of NV Gonzalez-Byass Pedro Ximénez Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Viejo Noé (30 Years/Años) but I fear that may push me over the edge...

I'd be drooling on the keyboard after that much wine....even over a 9-hour period.

Merry Christmas!

edit: I just realized that along with the water, you plan to drink 6 liters of liquid. YIKES

It's not a plan, it's reality. Fortunately, much of it has come out the other end!

OK, so nothing fancy for the 5th bottle - just another of the cava (and another 1.5L of water) whilst watching Gary Clark Jr's gig at Glastonbury in 2016.

I think this thread is an epiphany for Paul.

.... or more like an AApiphany.

Dude, seriously? 4 freakin' bottles alone by 2 in the afternoon? If this isn't a cry for help, it better be the moment you realize you have a problem. Why else would you admit this on a public forum for the entire world wide web to read?

Er, no. I started at about 3 in the afternoon local time. (Just for the record, not everyone on this forum is in the USA)

And, yes, I know that I'm an alcoholic. But I love good wine and food, to the extent that it's my raison d'etre. Can I not just enjoy what I love?

And yes, then one day I will die. But if you won't then you'll be the first amongst us!

Oh, and great music... I'm finishing the fifth bottle to Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa. Blues doesn't get much better than this.

OK, so for my 6th bottle I'm going slightly obscure. This is one for those of you who play snooker (that's the grown-up version of pool). The fastest ever 147.

And this for one of Scotland's finest blues/soul/rock singers.

EDIT: OK, so the 6th bottle was water, and it's getting light here. Goodnight folks!

years ago, I departed a flight from Denver to Dulles. I drank 2 bottles, was feeling quite happy. My layover was 2 hours, and don't recall drinking any water, though I sure wish I had. During the flight from Dulles to Paris CDG, I drank 3 bottles (in first class). I was dreadfully hungover for the next three days. I'm not proud by any means, but can say it was a valuable, and lingering lesson.

The water makes a lot of difference. Albeit that there is a danger, in extremis, of water intoxication. On my (rare these days) long haul flights I tend to be in First, and things like Krug 2004 and Montrose 2005 (the current offerings between HK and London) tend to slip down very well. But I always tried to match each glass of wine with one of water. In first you don't have to worry about the restrooms - sometimes they even come with a window!

Trans-Atlantic and US carriers generally don't offer wine of that quality - it's not worth trying for a magnum on them

So true. I recently flew Emirates for the first time. *Only* biz class, but the wines were so amazing (Valandraud? Are you kidding me?) that I had to be careful to pace myself. The flight was long enough (16 hours) that one could have put on one killer buzz and experienced a hangover in the same flight. Can't even imagine what they were pouring in First.

EVA Air serves great Champagnes for business class (Royal Laurel Class), ‘04 Krug and ‘06 Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame for long haul flights.

Over-hydration has risks, in airplanes where you are seated or lying down all the time, even with restrooms easily at hand. For anyone who suffers from BPH (a “guy thing”) it isn’t a smart risk to take.

As an example, this is apparently the wine list for Emirates F between HK and Dubai tomorrow:

Dom Perignon 2009
Meursault 1er Cru Château de Blagny Louis Latour 2014/2015
Y d'Yquem 2016
Howard Park Allingham Chardonnay 2016
Cháteau Pontet Canet 2006
Château Olivier Pessac-Léognan 2009
Craggy Range Sophia Gimblett Gravels 2011
Savaterre Shiraz 2013/2014
Two Hands Bella's Garden Shiraz 2015
Château Suduiraut 2007
Graham's Colheita 1963, Single Vintage Tawny Port

I miss my road warrior days in some respects!

Much better to drink too much water than not enough on a long haul flight.

Dehydration is a risk factor for deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a risk which is further increased by inactivity on a long flight. DVT poses a risk for pulmonary embolism, which can be fatal.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2430635/

Moderate alcohol consumption may reduce the risk of blood clots.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8790226
But binge drinking (e.g. several bottles on one flight) and heavy alcohol use can increase that risk.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25605687

The American College of Cardiology advises (emphasis added):
quote:

You can reduce your risk of pulmonary embolism by doing things that help prevent blood clots in your legs.
- Avoid sitting for long periods. Get up and walk around every hour or so, or flex your feet often.
- Get moving as soon as you can after surgery.
- When you travel, drink extra fluids. But avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine.
- Wear compression stockings if you are at high risk.
- If you take blood thinners, take them just the way your doctor tells you to.

https://www.cardiosmart.org/Healthwise/ue40/84/ue4084

Risk of water intoxication is extremely low. You’ll feel it’s very hard to drink any more long before you risk electrolyte imbalance. You’d have to drink gallons over a short period.
https://www.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/features/water-intoxication#1

If you’ve got BPH drinking a lot of water may make you get up to pee every hour or so. Could ruin your sleep but getting up to walk to the bathroom reduces another big risk for DVT: inactivity.

Tolerance levels do change with.... um... experience. I hope I never have a tolerance to alcohol that high.

Sadly or otherwise, I can assure you that it was not fake news! But it was spread over more than 12 hours from about 3pm, and with more water than wine, and a lot of food. And it helps that I'm 6'3" and 300lbs (in part, no doubt, because of the calories in alcohol).

Setting aside the questions raised above, I wouldn’t get near 4+ for a different reason: if I drink too much (and my limit is less than one bottle), I start to taste acetone, which is sort of nasty and enough to make any additional wine very unwelcome. Presumably this is because alcohol metabolizes to acetaldehyde, which does have an acetone aroma...

In fact this effect isn’t just an illusion. Many years ago while visiting a very beloved but rather hard drinking relative, he kept pouring some kind of lethal rose way beyond same limits. This was in the Loire, where rose is very strong and windows have no screens, and my breath turned out to attract gnats, which in turn attracted bats. So in the middle of the night we woke up to find ourselves surrounded by this cloud of bats swooping around to eat the bugs.

We fled to another room, and the next morning, not a trace of all this wildlife. But even so: One such experience was plenty! :-)
