I guess I'll take a swing at this.
My entry into wine happened shortly after my 21st birthday, in the autumn of 2000
Up until then, I didn't care for wine at all, mainly drinking soda.
My dad had been enthusiastic about wine but never really had the funds to buy anything worth keeping, and as neither me or my brother drank wine there weren't anyone to really share the passion with.
Anyway, a friend of my parents had been approached by a wine collector in order to acquire an expensive Hasselblad camera in exchange for some wine. The friend new something about the finer things in life, and he agreed to an exchange.
A week or so later, they were coming to dinner (venison) at my parents and the guests would bring the wine.
My dad was all giddy and when the bottles were brought in the kitchen, I took an interest because of my dad's excited mood. He began talking about Grand Cru Classé and this and that, and I understood that these wines were very expensive, and I had never seen anything like it.
At the dinner, I was drinking Coke, and my parents' friend pushed me "Come on, Niko. Don't you want a taste?" and finally I agreed saying something like "alright, but only a small sip - I don't really care for wine".
And man, was I sold. I had never smelled or tasted anything like it before. Admittedly, I'd never really taken the time either, but I had never been anything near something like this.
To me it was "can wine really taste like this?!?"
From that evening on, I was addicted. I was a student at university so I had no money, but instead I began reading. Reading anything and everything about wine and began buying smaller french wines (anything with "Cru" on it had my interest).
Soon my collection needed more structure and I discovered CellarTracker and joined up in autumn 2005
Well, I lived and learned and expanded my areas of interests in wine ever since, having love affairs with Australian Shiraz, Southern Rhone, Alsace, Piedmont etc.
But every now and then, when I get the chance to have a decent Bordeaux... "Ah, right. This is what wine taste like".
It feels coming home
By the way, the three wines we had that evening in 2000 was 1982 Gruaud Larose, 1983 Latour and 1985 Lafite.
