Damn was my first reaction as well. Cliff fit the definition of a gentleman and was good company. The first offline I ever attended was in NYC ages ago at the Peking Duck House. Very much worth a 6 hour drive to NJ then a train ride in. Cliff, and Dom were the people I was seated closest too and I remember my introduction to a load of different CdP. Cliff brought a magnum of Clos Mount Olivet and Doms Mystery bottle was an aged Napa Chardonnay that stumped almost everybody. He also introduced me to both Beaucastel and Pegasus and I was nicely educated. I know that this forum was or could be something special. To all of you that I’ve met, downed food, wine or even just a cigar with, you are wonderful folks. I still read new topics every time they come in my email. I just have limited my forum time and have had both personal health issues I’ve been working through or very close family. With each loss, it’s like another good friend has finished their journey here and I will miss them. I have a very strange memory surely somewhere on the spectrum but just typing that out brought video of that whole night through the front of my mind along with some sounds, smells including the long cold walk to Penn Station, because I was a wee tipsy, and the cab ride I shared getting up to the Pecking Duck House was insanity that I didn’t want to do tipsy. RIP Cliff. You were a great guy always trying to keep off lines going. I know that challenge. My thoughts a prayers of comfort go out to his wife, Marilyn? It was about 15 years back. I wish I had been able to make it down for more. For anybody even relatively new to this forum, go to an offline event. Start small and it’s easy to see how friendly and outgoing the people on here are. I’ve traveled to a bunch of different group events, stopping in different cities for a quick lunch or just a dinner. I don’t think I’ve ever regretted it. I’ve even met some international members and they treated me like visiting family. I do often think about you guys, even the rare posters. Don was a gut punch, but every one after Brad has been just as bad. I will choose to drink a nice glass of dessert wine tonight in Cliff’s honor. Cliff also introduced us to cassis wine made in the Hudson valley. It was nice to have another reference point on black currant other than preserves or crème de cassis and definitely upped my blind smelling of reds as well as better ability to be accurate in describing the nose and taste of certain reds. For that Cliff, I’m forever in your debt.
