RIP Cliff. I regret not getting my butt back up there to NY/NJ to share a few more glasses with you. It's been too long.

Apparently pretty sudden. He passed last night. His wife was posting on Facebook two days ago. Then this morning she linked to a post about his passing. That quick.

Cliff was a really good guy, as is his wife, Pat. He always wanted to get-together, but logistics of having to get back home were always a pain.

In fact a few days ago! He suggested a get-together at a restaurant he liked.

We met Cliff and his wife at an offline in NJ about a decade ago. Nice people. RIP, Cliff.

Very sad to hear about this. We coordinated several off lines and had dinners with Pat and Cliff. He enjoyed bringing out his older bottles to the off lines, will be missed.

I have Pat's number, but I didn't want to text yet. She has a daughter who lives nearby. I'm planning to attend the wake on Thursday but not sure if it will the afternoon or evening.

Damn was my first reaction as well. Cliff fit the definition of a gentleman and was good company. The first offline I ever attended was in NYC ages ago at the Peking Duck House. Very much worth a 6 hour drive to NJ then a train ride in. Cliff, and Dom were the people I was seated closest too and I remember my introduction to a load of different CdP. Cliff brought a magnum of Clos Mount Olivet and Doms Mystery bottle was an aged Napa Chardonnay that stumped almost everybody. He also introduced me to both Beaucastel and Pegasus and I was nicely educated. I know that this forum was or could be something special.

To all of you that I’ve met, downed food, wine or even just a cigar with, you are wonderful folks. I still read new topics every time they come in my email. I just have limited my forum time and have had both personal health issues I’ve been working through or very close family. With each loss, it’s like another good friend has finished their journey here and I will miss them.

I have a very strange memory surely somewhere on the spectrum but just typing that out brought video of that whole night through the front of my mind along with some sounds, smells including the long cold walk to Penn Station, because I was a wee tipsy, and the cab ride I shared getting up to the Pecking Duck House was insanity that I didn’t want to do tipsy.

RIP Cliff. You were a great guy always trying to keep off lines going. I know that challenge. My thoughts a prayers of comfort go out to his wife, Marilyn? It was about 15 years back. I wish I had been able to make it down for more.

For anybody even relatively new to this forum, go to an offline event. Start small and it’s easy to see how friendly and outgoing the people on here are. I’ve traveled to a bunch of different group events, stopping in different cities for a quick lunch or just a dinner. I don’t think I’ve ever regretted it. I’ve even met some international members and they treated me like visiting family.

I do often think about you guys, even the rare posters. Don was a gut punch, but every one after Brad has been just as bad. I will choose to drink a nice glass of dessert wine tonight in Cliff’s honor.
Cliff also introduced us to cassis wine made in the Hudson valley. It was nice to have another reference point on black currant other than preserves or crème de cassis and definitely upped my blind smelling of reds as well as better ability to be accurate in describing the nose and taste of certain reds. For that Cliff, I’m forever in your debt.

Fitting story and points well made, Dave. The only offlines I've regretted are the ones I've not been able to attend.

Cheers to Cliff and a life well-lived.

All of that weird memory recount really, as if you go back to my old posts are just memory regurgitatiion along with my thoughts kind of commenting in retrospect. When I read the email I just immediately jumped to post, which I just don’t do much of anymore because I’ve had my turn and I don’t mind being a wall flower and live vicariously through others new discoveries.

I would be glad to come down for another NYC offline dive we now have obtained limited access to a 1 bedroom in the village that a friend of a friend that’s like family just has to stay at when he wants to go to the city. I knew there would be some perks to this marriage business as tie passed and it’s not such a crazy thing to try and plan. It would be nice to do in Cliff’s memory.

The first CT member I ever met in person was cjsavino. He and his wife shared the taxi ride that wasn’t too unusual other than this guy tried to see how far past 70mph he could get the cab, a minivan going before jamming full brakes, which having done brakes on many different vehicles sounded as if the could just break apart at any given point because I was thinking every pad had to be close to being metal on rotor with the shrieking and pulsing of the antilock trying to compensate. I think we all had some high blood pressure and were in need of a stiff drink that night.
Thanks for the kid remarks. Not Marilyn. I had the image of Dr. M (Musedir’s) wife.
Hello to friends old and new.

Sad news indeed. Many of the stalwarts here I have met at offlines, but I do not think I ever had the privilege and honor of meeting Cliff personally.
This is a loss of opportunity I only now realize as such.

To echo my friend Dave - champagneinhand - who made a comment that immediately resonated so deeply with me, and that so obviously echoed with other CT friends as well that I have met via this forum:
quote:

For anybody even relatively new to this forum, go to an offline event.

Having been welcomed by CT friends, having helped welcome CT friends, having helped organize and having been helped organize CT offlines, I am put to mind that now is a time to help re-invigorate that noble endeavor.

So you can't go to an offline event unless there is an offline event. But - here's the magic - you don't have to wait for somebody to schedule such a thing!

Imagine you're a DeadHead (I'm not, but imagine with me...):

"I'm going to be in [InsertAreaHere] in [InsertTimePeriodHere]. Love me some new food/friends/wines. I Need a Miracle!!"
signed, [HaveWineWillTravel]l.

It's a bit crazy - but, it's the honest truth - I've more than once been on both sides of that seemingly nutty notion, and I have unforgettable soulful memories as a result. (Quite possibly there may have been some memorable wines involved as well, if that helps.) With so many of you in this very thread, and with some of you still needing to happen!

I'm in North Georgia now, but near enough Atlanta.

Incredibly sad and may his memory be a blessing to all who knew and loved him. Recall seeing this message from Cliff just a few weeks ago in the thread of inherited wine ...
