I have been meaning to do this one for a couple of weeks now.

BETTER REPORTS
Well, it's not clear that we all really want to see this. However, I added a new report which shows a yearly/quarterly/monthly summary of your consumption data. It shows count of bottles and total cost consumed over these periods of time. All of the text is hot, so with one click you can drill into a given area.

Thanks, Eric. Another cool report. This same layout would be useful for the purchase data, too.

The exact same thought crossed my mind. And then eventually the comparison of what you buy to what you drink to what you cellar. Having the Consumption data in place is the basic building block I have needed for a while to get to this point.

The report is not currently filterable by consumption type, but I will add that in the future.

This idea keeps popping up in my head. If you are trying to get an idea of purchases over time, this format would be ideal. It would be a nice addition to the Advanced Search Report choices, or alternatively, could be the default for "Purchases" off of the left-menu with that report moved to Advanced Search.

Paul, I totally agree. I was actually thinking about this last night.

I will add it to my short list of projects to tackle on the sooner rather than later side. Here is my current very short list:

  1. Dramatically speed up add/edit wine page.
  2. Dramatically speed up the advanced query page.
  3. Fix up the DrinkBy report to not be hardcoded to WA.
  4. Make the Availability/Drinkability report filterable from the Advanced query. Teach it about Consumption data (perhaps instead of purchase data). Teach it about. In general, it needs a lot of love.
  5. Generate a signup email for new people who register.
  6. Generate email when I process pendign edits so people know the status of their requests.

I haven't prioritized beyond that handful yet, but I will put this near the top of the queue unless something else terribly urgent comes up.

Since the "Purchase Summary by Store" is already on both the Advanced Search Page and "Summarize By", perhaps it would be nice to have the new Purchase report on the "Summarize By" menu right next to its sibling, the Consumption report.

Just catching up with this..I have entered about 200 bottles so far, and 85 show up as "not specified" on the drink by report. Does this report use my personal "Drinking Window" or the WA drinking range. Have not routinely been entering the WA reviews for all my entries

Also note that the Drink by report lists individual bottles rather than collapsing them into similar records, might like the later if it would also show #bottles

The DrinkBy report is still hardcoded to the Wine Advocate Drinkign windows, specifically the end date. Apologies, I will be sprucing this up soon!

since we are talking about reports, I would like to see a better distinction between "price" (what I actually paid" and valuation (wine-searcher, etc).

This is already available. Go to the Personal Notes section and add the current valuation for the wine. That wine will appear in your summary lists, but your purchase price is still tracked.

This is very useful if you get a bottle as a gift. I have been entering those as a $0 purchase and the store being the giver. I then enter the valuation so I can track it and at some point insure it.

For a more complete description of the DrinkBy thing, go here: http://www.cellartracker.com/forum/tm.asp?m=1210

Price and Valuation are distinct, but I don;t expose them as two columns nor do I have a report showing the deltas. I few folks have requested this, so I will look at doing something in the future.

It would useful to have a report that compares cost (basis, total amount paid) to the current valuation of ones entire collection ("cellar"). For instance, it you have replacement value insurance, and something awful befell your cellar, that sort of report would be very useful in dealing with your insurance company. The data is there, just a matter of providing the summary fields.

The DrinkBy and Drinkability stuff is greatly improved now. See the latest release notes.
